Jesus and his disciples bored a boat, at the simple command of Jesus saying “LET US GO OVER TO THE OTHER SIDE” unaware of the details that were involved in following the “The Words of Christ” they boarded the boat. Isn’t it funny how we can be simply following the “The Words of the master and we are totally unaware of the details.
A lot of us say that we like surprises but we really don’t, oh sure we love when our boo comes home with a dozen of our favorite flowers.
We love it when our coworker finally decides to buy our lunch.
What we love is “Good Surprises” but what were not to found of is those unexpected bills,
that boo coming home and saying “We need to talk”
you over hearing that coworker throwing you under the bus to the boss. It’s those “Unpleasant Surprises” that knock the wind out of us.
God seems as if he has a PHD in Unpleasant surprises. He tells us where we are going to end up but he convieantly doesn’t mention all that we are going to have to encounter to get there.
Gives Joseph a dream that his brothers and his Father was going to bow down and reverce him. But he didn’t mention the PIT, POTIFER’S HOUSE, THE PRISON, NOT EVEN THE PALACE. Seem like God you would let a brother know , let a sister know that they had to go through all of this to get to that.
People say that the devil is in the details. But I summit to you that there is DEVOLOPMENT IN THE DETAILS.
Mark 5:1 ESV
1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.
Mark 5:2 ESV
2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.
When your in purpose not only will it be provision but there will also be opposition
So now that they are finally out of the storm looks like they can finally catch their breath. The text says “IMMEDIATELY” Here comes something else outta nowhere.
Just paid of a bill now IMMEDIATELY here comes another one
Just got ironed out the last misunderstanding now we back on speaking terms then but IMMEDIATELY
We must be prepared for the IMMEDIATELY’S of life.
That’s why I got to pump myself up with so much WORD that when the IMMEDIATELY come and it will come instead of cussing I will say a prayer
I need to be so full of word that when IMMEDIATEY comes to stress me out. I wont reach for a bottle or a cigarette to calm my nerves but instead I will drop down on my knees and say Lord you are my source and my strength.
So IMMEDIATEY this man comes out of the tombs. But verses 3-5 let us know that this is not just an ordinary man.
Verse 3 lets us know that he was a TOMB Raider
Look down your row say ARE YOU A TOMB RAIDER?
Matthew 8:28 ESV
28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way.
Mark 5:3 ESV
3 He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain,
Demon — a created supernatural being rebellious and hostile to God and anyone allied with Him.
Often times we can’t never get where we need to get to in life because we keep on trying to relive we keep trying to rehash. We keep trying to dwell in something that God has already declared dead.
1. Friends /Relationships
2. Habbits
3. Me
Entertaining sin will cause will invite demonic activity in our lives.
When you touch the unclean you will host the unclean and live in dead places
Demons are dangerous and destructive, once they get a stronghold they begin to separate me from life giving relationships
Mark 5:4 ESV
4 for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.
A clear indication of a demon possessed life is a uncontrollable life
Mark 5:5 ESV
5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.
The end goal is always to push us into self destruction
He was in the mountains: ISOLATED fist sign of depression is when a person shuts the world out soaks in there mess.
Crying and cutting himself with stones: Not happy with himself so thus he is hurting himself.
Has anyone ever been there you’re in this vicious cycle? You don’t like what your doing but you cant stop doing it?
Has anyone ever been there when you knew what you were doing was not honoring God but you kept right on doing your thing.
This is a picture of every human apart from Jesus.
This man doesn’t have a relationship with Jesus Christ. And contray to popular belief if I don’t have a relationship with Jesus Christ there is only one other team I can be on. No No No this isn’t the NFL where you have 32 teams to choose from, this isn’t the NBA where you got 28 teams to choose from. I am either on God’s team or the Devils team.
We don’t like to admit that or say that, but the Truth is the Truth. And because I was created for the Glory of God, and because I was created to bring God glory with my life when I am not doing that it’s a constant struggle.
2 Corinthians 2:11 ESV
11 so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.
Ephesians 6:12 ESV
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
2 Corinthians 10:3 ESV
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.
2 Corinthians 10:4 ESV
4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV
5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
James 4:7 ESV
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
The enemy is upset because we are The Imago Dei in Man(Lat. “image of God”). Refers to the fact that humanity carries a unique resemblance to God.
Genesis 1:26 ESV
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Genesis 1:27 ESV
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Psalm 8:3 ESV
3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
Psalm 8:4 ESV
4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
Psalm 8:5 ESV
5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
Psalm 8:6 ESV
6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,
Psalm 8:7 ESV
7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
Psalm 8:8 ESV
8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
1.What do these verses tell us about the meaning of being created in the image of God?
2.What else does it mean to be created in God’s image?
Personality: Like God, people are individual beings with self consciousness.
Eternal: Like God, people will exist into eternity.
Relational: Like God, people have a capacity and drive for relationships.
Volitional: Like God, people have the freedom and ability to make volitional choices according to their will.
Rationality: Like God, people have the ability to think, contemplate, and reflect on abstract ideas, future plans, and past events, advancing toward a more beneficial existence through problem solving.
Spirituality: Like God, people are spiritual beings possessing an immaterial part of their constitution.
Physicality: Unlike God, people have a material part of their constitution that is corporeal. But like God, people have senses that come as a direct result of our physicality, such as man’s ability to see and to hear.
Morality: Like God, people are inherently moral creatures, understanding that there is good and evil (although this was gained as a result of the Fall).
Dominionality: Like God, people have been given authority to rule over creation, using all its resources for their benefit, enjoyment, and survival.
1.Man fully retains the imago Dei and only misrepresents it through personal sin.
2.Man fully lost the imago Dei. It is restored only in Christ.
3.The imago Dei has been retained in all men, but marred by sin. It is restored in Christ.
Scripture clearly states that the imago Dei has been retained to some degree in all people.
Genesis 5:1 ESV
1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God.
Genesis 9:6 ESV
6 “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.
James 3:7 ESV
7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind,
James 3:6 ESV
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.
Genesis 5:2 ESV
2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.
James 3:8 ESV
8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
Genesis 5:3 ESV
3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.
James 3:9 ESV
9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.
Genesis 5:4 ESV
4 The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters.
Every human deserves respect because we are all bearing God’s Image
Mark 5:6 ESV
6 And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.
Mark 5:7 ESV
7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”
MArk
There is a duplicity on the inside of me there is a war
Romans 7:18 ESV
18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.
Romans 7:21 ESV
21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.
Mark 5:8 ESV
8 For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
*IN CHAPTER 4 WE SAW THAT JESUS HAD POWER OVER THE ELEMENTS BUT NOW WE SEE HE HAS POWER OVER DEVILS TO… AND YOUR MONEY TO…AND YOUR HEALTH TO …AND YOUR KIDS TO…LOOK AT SOMEBODY AND SAY ALL POWER
At full strength a Roman Legion numbered 6,000 men. The name had come to signify a well organized group possessing great power.
Mark 5:9 ESV
9 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”
Mark 5:10 ESV
10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.
Mark 5:11 ESV
11 Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,
Mark 5:12 ESV
12 and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.”
Mark 5:13 ESV
13 So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.
The pigs would rather die than be controlled by demons
Mark 5:14 ESV
14 The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened.
Mark 5:15 ESV
15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.
Mark 5:16 ESV
16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs.
Mark 5:17 ESV
17 And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region.
True Jesus ministry isn't concerned with personal gain but rather when people are being transformed
Mark 5:18 ESV
18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him.
Mark 5:19 ESV
19 And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
True Jesus ministry is residual
Mark 5:20 ESV
20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.
Mark 5:21 ESV
21 And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea.
Mark
Mark 5:22 ESV
22 Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet
Mark 5:23 ESV
23 and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.”
Mark 5:24 ESV
24 And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him.
Mark 5:25 ESV
25 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years,
Mark 5:26 ESV
26 and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse.
Mark 5:27 ESV
27 She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment.
Mark 5:28 ESV
28 For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.”
Mark 5:29 ESV
29 And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.
Mark 5:30 ESV
30 And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?”
Mark 5:31 ESV
31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
Mark 5:32 ESV
32 And he looked around to see who had done it.
Mark 5:33 ESV
33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.
Mark 5:34 ESV
34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
Mark 5:35 ESV
35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
Mark 5:36 ESV
36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
Mark 5:37 ESV
37 And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
Mark 5:38 ESV
38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly.
Mark 5:39 ESV
39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.”
Mark 5:40 ESV
40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was.
Mark 5:41 ESV
41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.”
