Titus 1:10–16 ESV
10 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. 11 They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. 12 One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth. 15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

False teaching in the church is destructive.

What do false teachers look like?

False teachers refuse to submit to authority.

“insubordinate”

False teachers speak many words without speaking the Word.

“empty talkers”
They say a lot without ever saying anything!
It might sound good. It might be well presented. It might be impressive speech. Yet there is no biblical substance to it!

False teachers persuade others of the truthfulness of their lies.

“deceivers” - this word literally means “Mind-Deceiver
Loki - In the Avengers is the god of michtif. - He is constantly pretending to be what he is not in order to get what he wants. He plays mind games.
False teachers play mind games that are powerfully persuasive. They convince others of the truthfulness of their lies.
These false teachers willfully lead others astray.

False teachers require more than simple faith in Jesus Christ.

“Circumcision Party” - A group that taught that in order to be a Christian you had to become a Jew. In order to be right with God you had to obey the law and trust Jesus.

Salvation = Jesus + Something

The gospel teaches just the opposite.

Salvation = Jesus + Nothing

Predators in the Pulpit
Philip Keller - called them -

False teaching must not be tolerated.

Titus 1:11 ESV
11 They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.

Biblical love is not an excuse for passivity.
