Mark 8:22–26 CSB
They came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and brought him out of the village. Spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” He looked up and said, “I see people—they look like trees walking.” Again Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes. The man looked intently and his sight was restored and he saw everything clearly. Then he sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into the village.”

I. The man’s friends brought him.

Mark 8:22 CSB
They came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him.

A. many people’s stories begin with the faith of their friends.

Mark 8:22 CSB
They came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him.
Illus: We all have friends who desperatly need Jesus. We all have family who need Jesus.
This man was healed because His friends made him a priority.
Who in your life do you know that needs to be healed by Jesus.
There is no crueler thing than seeing someone who needs Jesus and then come to him with out them.
This coming week we have the harvest fest. Don’t just show up and think you did your part. Invite people.
Illus:Luke 5:17–24 (CSB) 17 On one of those days while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and also from Jerusalem. And the Lord’s power to heal was in him. 18 Just then some men came, carrying on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed. They tried to bring him in and set him down before him. 19 Since they could not find a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the roof tiles into the middle of the crowd before Jesus.
THE SON OF MAN FORGIVES AND HEALS
17 On one of those days while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and also from Jerusalem.
20 Seeing their faith he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
21 Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to think to themselves: “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
22 But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus replied to them, “Why are you thinking this in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he told the paralyzed man, “I tell you: Get up, take your stretcher, and go home.”

B. Are you fervent in talking to God for your friends?

Mark 8:22 CSB
They came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him.
Illus: Not only did the mans friends bring him to Jesus, they begged Jesus on His behalf.
The bible teaches that God hears and answers fervent prayers.
We pray once and then say, God didn’t answer.
God’s heart may be that you pray consistently pray for years before he answers.
I think we have lost the practice of praying fervently because we no longer believe God works.
Illus:James 5:16–18 (CSB)
35 The next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37 The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and noticed them following him, he asked them, “What are you looking for?”
They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect. 17 Elijah was a human being as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the land. 18 Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the land produced its fruit.
39 “Come and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah”, (which is translated “the Christ”), 42 and he brought Simon to Jesus.
When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”).

II. The man was not healed fully at first.

Mark 8:23–24 CSB
He took the blind man by the hand and brought him out of the village. Spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” He looked up and said, “I see people—they look like trees walking.”

A. This miracle serves to connect two stories in the text.

Mark 8:23–24 CSB
He took the blind man by the hand and brought him out of the village. Spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” He looked up and said, “I see people—they look like trees walking.”
Illus: Context matters. We often read the bible separate from the context. God has placed this passage between two passages.
God used a blind man to communicate what was happening in the disciples lives. He uses a blind man to show how the blind gradually come to know Jesus.
The disciples lives were not transformed instantly, but instead slowly.
When we share our faith, we should not expect everyone to respond instantly, God brings some gradually, and some instantaneously.
Mark 8:14–18 CSB
The disciples had forgotten to take bread and had only one loaf with them in the boat. Then he gave them strict orders: “Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” They were discussing among themselves that they did not have any bread. Aware of this, he said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact you have no bread? Don’t you understand or comprehend? Do you have hardened hearts? Do you have eyes and not see; do you have ears and not hear? And do you not remember?
Mark 8:27–30 CSB
Jesus went out with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the road he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” They answered him, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, one of the prophets.” “But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.” And he strictly warned them to tell no one about him.

B. Sometimes God works radically, and sometime he works gradually.

Mark 8:23–24 CSB
He took the blind man by the hand and brought him out of the village. Spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” He looked up and said, “I see people—they look like trees walking.”
Illus: Every morning I spend time in God’s word.
As I spend time in God’s Word I try to find one thing from the word to apply to my life.
I screen shot one verse and look at it throughout the day.
Sure, I may not grow leaps and bounds in a single day, but I can take a baby step every day.
If you took a small step every day, applying God’s word to your life, how much will you grow over the course of a year?
Philippians 1:6 CSB
I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

III. Jesus finished what he started.

Mark 8:25–26 CSB
Again Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes. The man looked intently and his sight was restored and he saw everything clearly. Then he sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into the village.”

A. What God begins he will finish.

Illus: Is God faithful?
Does God finish what he starts?
Does God ever fail?
THe promise of scripture is that God will bring completion to those whom he starts the work.
Romans 8:27–31 CSB
And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified. What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
