Intro” The Bible, God’s word. is absolutely necessary to the believer. It shine from above, within, around, and ahead.
It helps us to avoid snares and pitfall of the world. It improve our vision, we use the word as a lamp to our feet and light to our path,

The word is a light that shines from above. Just as the sun is the center of our solar system, likewise, God is the center of our universe through His word.
1 John 1:5 NKJV
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
2. The word is a light that shines from within.He works in our hearts through His word and the power of the Holy Spirit.

130 The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.
3. The word is a light that shines around us.
Satan, the world’s system, the flesh and other pitfalls surround us.

“Your word is a lamp unto my feet”
A lamp shows us the next step. In the early centuries the people carried little clay dishes containing oil and the light illuminated the path only one step ahead. So there was only enough light to see one step at a time.
a.
a. This is how we walk by faith, one step at a time. Each act of obedience shows us the next step, and eventually we arrive at the appointed destination.
b. Obedience to the word keeps us walking in the light.
I John 1:

7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
It lights the sinners path.

9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
a. It is the light that leads to salvation.
“A light unto my path”
A light unto my path shows us the direction we are going. A light no matter how bright, will not show us all the twist and turns ahead on the road, but it will give us a general sense of direction.

18 But the path of the just is as the shining light, That shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

The Bible does not unfold the whole map of life before us. If it did, it could be terrifying.
EXAMPLE: God did not begin with Abraham by asking him to give up his son, NO, he asked to leave his home and head for a new country.
SOMETIMES THE LORD GIVES:
Lamp: Specific truth.
Light: General truth.
Psalm 119:106 KJV 1900
106 I have sworn, and I will perform it, That I will keep thy righteous judgments.
He is saying that he preform that which he had promised. He would uphold God’s law as it applies to the situations of his life.
a. If we make a commitment to the Lord, we need to keep it. But it is only by His grace that we are able to do so.

107 I am afflicted very much: Quicken me, O Lord, according unto thy word.

107 I am exceedingly afflicted; Revive me, O Lord, according to Your word.
He was afflicted, possibly persecution.
a. Godly living is far from easy. Even in affliction he had learned to give the Lord allegiance to His word.
“Quicken me” or “Revive me”
He had allowed his circumstances to get him down.
a. Circumstance may get us down, but God’s word ministry to our spirit.
b. God’s word will assure us that we are loved. It will give us strength in our weakness.

108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O Lord, And teach me thy judgments.

“Freewill offering” It was a offering of thanksgiving that was not required, it expressed the gratitude of the worshipper. He asked God look favorably upon it.
a. He promises to praise Him.
b, He ask God “to teach me your judgments”
Worship makes us receptive to the word of God. After we have opened our hearts to Him in praise, we are ready to receive what He had for us.

The wicked did their best to trap him. But he stayed on the right path.
a. Often times affliction leads to straying.

111 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: For they are the rejoicing of my heart.

111 I have inherited Your testimonies forever, For they are the joy of my heart.
Even through suffering (affliction) and persecution of this life, he finds confidence in God’s word.
“heritage” “Inherited” God’s word had become his promised land.
a. In God’s word finds rejoicing.
“for they are rejoicing of my heart”
b. Sometimes God takes through the furnace of suffering so we can better receive the blessings he has for us.

1.Once our hearts are set on the word, then our lives will be on the right course.
