Ephesians 6:1–4 ESV
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Obey
Sets up right and wrong
-obedience is right, disobedience is wrong
b. Children obey in the Lord
i. obey unless instructed to unbiblical action.
c. Expectation for parents to raise children in the Lord.
2. Honor
-different then obedience. Honor means to place them in high respectable positions and to speak highly of them.
a. A lifestyle of obedience.
i. command doesn’t end
ii. live your life honorably
b. Comes with a promise of blessing
-obedience and disobedience always have consequences
-analogy of corrupt business practices vs honest business practices (live long in the land)
3. Disciple Well
a. Not heavy handed
b. Walk through life with them.
Mark 9:17–18 ESV
And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.”
c. Supplemented by the church
-support parents, disciple parents & children, seek to reach the lost and share the Gospel, support and encourage on another to live Godly, honorable lives.
