Sermon Scripture
24 Some were being persuaded by the things spoken, but others would not believe. 25 And when they did not agree with one another, they began leaving after Paul had spoken one parting word, “The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers, 26 saying,
‘Go to this people and say,
“You will keep on hearing, but will not understand;
And you will keep on seeing, but will not perceive;
27 For the heart of this people has become dull,
And with their ears they scarcely hear,
And they have closed their eyes;
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
And hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart and return,
And I would heal them.” ’
28 “Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will also listen.” 29 When he had spoken these words, the Jews departed, having a great dispute among themselves.
30 And he stayed two full years in his own rented quarters and was welcoming all who came to him, 31 preaching the kingdom of God and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered.
*This is not a history book. There is history, but it is a picture of two things.
This book as is every book of scripture - is declarative and descriptive of the power of God.
This book is also a picture of our placement in the worlds system in light of the power of God and displayed through the history of God and His people.
This book is also a picture of our placement in the worlds system in light of the power of God and displayed through the history of God and His people.
We are the filth of the world - not the political rulers or power seekers.
By 70 AD all of Jerusalem will be destroyed
We see this folly with the Jews - By 70 AD all of Jerusalem will be destroyed
Government and power will all transfer at that time to Rome.
Government and power will all transfer at that time to Rome.
We don’t run the world system. Christians don’t look great in the world’s system. When Christians try to do that it seems as though they depart from the scriptures. It is God’s soverignty - it is God’s will - it is God, the Lord Jesus Christ - His Word which Christians are concerned with.
We are not here to control governments. That doesn’t seem to be Pauls focus to “change the course of Roman history”
Paul preached the good news of Jesus Christ and God’s Kingdom
Knowing that we come to Acts 28
From Acts chapter 9 and after the text deals primarily with God’s work through Paul
At this point Paul had been arrested, falsely charged and imprisoned by Rome. Paul in bondage has reached the city of Rome.
Paul is in bondage but able to live in a house because he is chained to a Roman soldier for 2 years.
Paul then calls the Jewish leaders in Rome to talk to them.
There is already a Christian church in Rome at this time.

Paul (the gospel first to the Jew) contacts the Jews first.

There are 7 majior synogoges in Rome at this time.

It is entirley possible that Paul had 15-40 people come representing the Jews.

They then have discussion with Paul and at the close of verse 23-24, we see that some of them believed and some did not.
They then have discussion with Paul and at the close of verse 23-24, we see that some of them believed and some did not.
24 Some were being persuaded by the things spoken, but others would not believe.
This leads me to the teaching of Christ in: where He explains that the sheep, His sheep, hear my voice and know my voice and follow)
From refer to (the sheep hear my voice and know my voice and follow)
Those who were appointed to eternal life believed and those who were not, did not.
Those who hear the voice of Christ, hear His voice when the Holy Spirit touches them - though they are always his sheep (ex. Saul w/Stephen vs when he became Paul)
Those who were appointed to eternal life believed and those who were not, did not. Those who hear the voice of Christ, hear His voice when the Holy Spirit touches them - though they are always his sheep (ex. Saul w/Stephen vs when he became Paul)
You al sang the song this morning which states: “My erring child, He reconciled”
“My erring child, He reconciled”
3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
God’s child is God’s child before being reconciled. This doesn’t mean that one isn’t separated, but just the opposite: that being separated God reconciled you dear child of God. It’s not that you become a child once you are reconciled, but that you are reconciled because you are a child.
It is God’s soverignty working together through the obedient and disobedient to bring about the accomplishing of His glorious will:
God’s child before reconciled. It’s not that you become a child once you are reconciled, but that you are reconciled because you are a child.
Friends this glorious gospel message has long brought debate amongst even the Bible literate:
25 And when they did not agree with one another, they began leaving after Paul had spoken one parting word, “The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers,
Acts 28:25-
They are not in agreement with each other about what Paul is saying.
Paul is preaching the Kingdom of God and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus.
In the midst of this dispute, Paul gives one final parting word and that word is not his own, but it is the Word of scripture, from Isaiah, spoken by the Holy Spirit:
25 And when they did not agree with one another, they began leaving after Paul had spoken one parting word, “The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers, 26 saying,
‘Go to this people and say,
“You will keep on hearing, but will not understand;
And you will keep on seeing, but will not perceive;
27 For the heart of this people has become dull,
And with their ears they scarcely hear,
And they have closed their eyes;
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
And hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart and return,
And I would heal them.” ’
Acts 28:25-278
Now, let us note what we don’t know so that we don’t assume anything upon the text:
We don’t know from this text if these people go to hell or if God just blinded them for a time so that the gospel could go to the Gentiles.
We don’t know what God does: lest He tells us.
We don’t know what God does: lest He tells us. We know that He is telling us what He is doing with a people at this present time and thus what He is doing at this present time with the message of “The Kingdom of God” and the teaching of Jesus Christ. God is sovereign and we are learning what or how He is sovereignly moving.
So many popular questions come about as we attempt to understand God’s sovereign rule.
So many popular questions come about as we attempt to understand God’s soverign rule.
EX:“If God is sovereign and rules over our lives then why are there commandments?”
“If God is sovereign and rules over our lives then why are there commandments?”
He gives them not in giving up His sovereignty but so that we know what His will is.
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
He gives them not in giving up His sovereignty but so that we know what HIs will is.
I don’t believe that we can even conceive what perfection is or that of perfection of will or absolute sovierinty or perfect justice. We don’t even know what it is to have a good law abiding community other than that of what God has revealed to us and we even rebel against that. But by the grace of God, by the power of God we can know that the will of God (not the choice, righteousness or works of man) is perfect (beyond us)
I don’t believe that we can even conceive what perfection is or that of perfection of will or absolute sovierinty or perfect justice. We don’t even know what it is to have a good law abiding community other than that of what God has revealed to us and we even rebel against that.
That perfect will is able to be seen/approved (dokimazo - verb - present active infinitive) by the work of God within us, by the correcting of our minds towards God. You are presently made able to participate in it and this is by the will of God.
So I don’t know all, but I do know that God is soverign and He is perfectly soverign and His will is right, His ways are just and He is love. And it is an amazing thing to me that by the transforming work of God through the renewing of our mind we are able to participate in the present active revelation of His good and perfect will in our lives.
So I don’t know. But I do know that God is soverign and He is perfectly soverign and His will is right, His ways are just and He is love.
This good and perfect will has to do essentially with “The Kingdom of God” & the teachings of Jesus.
This good and perfect will of God is being explained to the Jewish leaders in Rome - In its final words it is being spoken through the Holy Spirits words spoken to the Prophet Isaiah.
These words - the quote is from Isaiah in the year that King Uzziah died: again, not Pauls words but rather, the words of scripture, spoken to them (the Jewish leaders) about what God is doing in them at this present moment as it relates to His Kingdom & Jesus the Christ.
In conclusion Paul says:
In the book of Judges -
Samson knew that he was not to marry outside of the tribe
God gave the commandment (why?) so that Samson might know that.
Samson did it anyways
Now, it was obviously God’s design that he marry outside the tribe
“Samson’s parents did not know that it was of the Lord”
Samson is disobeying the law.
Is Samson disobeying the law because he wants to or is he saying I don’t want to do this.
Samsons judgment is based on HIs attitude not what he did.
The quote is from Isaih, in the year that King Uzziah died.
This is what Paul said to them.
There is not one who did not know this scripture.
So these are not Pauls words, but the words of scripture.
28 “Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will also listen.”
Known to you - it is made known what God is doing.
salvation - not redemption. Redemption has already taken place. Salvation is the comprehension of what God has done for you in Christ.
Salvation - not the same as redemption. Redemption has already taken place.
Salvation is the comprehension of what God has done for you in Christ.
It’s not making that real, it is real.
Salvation is not making redemption real, it is real - it is coming to a comprehension of the real.
Redemption has already taken place - God has already His children. Salvation has come to the Gentiles.
Redemption has already taken place - God has already His children. Salvation has come to the Gentiles.
So then why do we preach? Why is Paul preaching?
Friends contrary to popular thought, we do not preach to save souls.
Friends contrary to popular thought, we do not preach to save souls.
One Pastor has put it bluntly this way:
One Pastor has put it this way:
“Anyone who preaches to save souls is an idiot”
“Anyone who preaches to save souls is an idiot”
The reason that you preach is because God told you to.
In the same manner, you go to the mission field because you love the Lord, not to save souls.
The reason that you preach is because God told you to.
The Word of God - the written revelation of the love and will of God births obedience to God (as an action of love) as the great motivation to walk in the ways of God.
You go to the mission field because you love the Lord, not to save souls.
God has His own in every nation, kindred, tribe and tounge, and we have the marvelous oportunity to tell somebody that their children of the King.
We as God’s children are their, not when redemption takes place but when the salvation of God, by the work of the Holy Spirit begins to open their eyes, ears, heart and minds to the glorious comprehension of what Christ has done.
So the good news isn’t: “you can be God’s child if you want to be”, but the gospel is “As God’s child He has delivered you”
So the good news isn’t: “you can be God’s child if you want to be”, but the gospel is “As God’s child He has delivered you”
That is why we have scripture after scripture saying that God has a purpose for the Gentiles. That He has people of every tribe and tongue and nation.
That is why we have scripture after scripture saying that God has a purpose for the Gentiles. That He has people of every tribe and tounge and nation.
29 When he had spoken these words, the Jews departed, having a great dispute among themselves.
Acts 28:
Can you imagine them debating Isaiah?
1 Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
3 He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all
To fall on Him.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth;
Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of the living
For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
9 His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a rich man in His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
10 But the Lord was pleased
To crush Him, putting Him to grief;
If He would render Himself as a guilt offering,
He will see His offspring,
He will prolong His days,
And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.
11 As a result of the anguish of His soul,
He will see it and be satisfied;
By His knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great,
And He will divide the booty with the strong;
Because He poured out Himself to death,
And was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.
as it speaks of the piercing of our transgressions or mared beyond that of any man... when it speaks of the pregnant virgin
They went out disputing these things, they went out disputing wether or not what Paul was saying in stating the scripture was in fact taking place.
Now note this - whatever side of the dispute that those Jewish religious leaders came down on, it did not change the truth of what God was doing. Through their sight or their blindness all things continue to take place according to the Word of God.
Now beloved, this great Word, by which all things move has not only come to you, but the Sprit of God has been given to you so that you may hear and see and having your mind turned towards God -made aware of His marvelous grace and redemption - you can walk in the glorious light of the good and perfect will of God - This is a sweet salvation, a glorious truth, a marvelous work of grace.
This is a truth to rest in. That God is in control and afresh on our minds is the perfect plan of the Kingdom of God and the great work and teachings of Jesus our Lord.

Think on Samson…you know, Hero of the faith Samson, humiliated by the trickery of a woman Samson.
