Sermon Bumper: Sequoia Trees Need Fire

// Recap

Week 1: Where are your roots?
The Parable of the Sower (really the parable of the soils)
The Seed = the word of God
The Path = people hear, but are so beaten down by life, they can’t receive anymore.
Rocky Ground = people hear, are excited about the word, but haven’t owned for themselves. They find their salvation through friends, parents, pastors.
Thorny Ground = people hear God’s word, but also the world’s word. Their ground is too fertile, allows everything to grow.
Good Ground = people hear, produce 30, 60, 100 times what was planted.
Not about how much we produce, but simply that we are producing
The first root to break through is the radicle
We are changing the fundamental way we have been doing things, in order to get somewhere we haven’t been!

Seed Facts

How Seeds Grow
Seeds need 3 things to grow:
Light - this light can be natural or artificial
tells us that Satan disguises himself as light
This is the idea of the Thorny ground - it allows both good and bad to thrive.
Food
Water
Seeds are incredible because they are dormant! This means that they are inactive and can be awakened simply by adding a little water!
All it usually takes to wake them up, though, is just to add water. Whether you plant them in moist soil or simply wrap them in a moist paper towel, they will begin to come to life.

Amazingly, scientists still don't fully understand what all happens inside of a seed as it comes to life. As the seed soaks up water, its food stored inside begins to be converted into energy in the form of enzymes. These enzymes start the process of sending out roots and sprouting the first parts of the plant. Exactly how all this works is still a bit of a mystery, but it is fascinating to watch whether you're a child or an adult!
Tonight’s message is called, Dormant Destruction
Ask a friend, “Are you Dormant?”

Dead to Live //

The Apostle Paul, wrote...
Philippians 1:21 ESV
21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
He wrote it a different way in...
Paul knew something that is truly hard to wrap our minds around...
1 Corinthians 15:36 ESV
36 You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.
Paul knew something that is truly hard to wrap our minds around...
In order to live, we must actually die.

Plant Reproduction

For a plant to reproduce, the fruit or flower must actually die so that it can produce more of it’s kind.
When a plant dies or gives fruit, there is a seed(s) embedded.
Action must take place in order for the seed to be activated!
For most seeds, it’s the idea of planting and watering
For the Sequoia Tree, it requires FIRE!

Walking through the Fire

Sequoia Trees
In the video we saw at the beginning, we see that the fire was necessary for the Sequoia seed to be opened.
Not only does the fire activate the seed, but it also clears out the debris to allow for clear ground to be planted!
Literally, nature is plowing the ground so that good ground can be made!
Walking Through Fire in Life
Many times we have to walk through fire in our own lives:
Fights with Friends or Family
You or a Parent loses a job
Parents argue or get a divorce
Your best friend isn’t the best
While these situations are hard, they have the incredible potential to make us stronger.
Shad, Mesh, Abed - literal fiery furnace () They walked through the fire and were not burned.
Song: Not Afraid - we sing a line in this song that says, “when I walk through the fire, I will not be burned.”
This is based on the verse,
Isaiah 43:2 ESV
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.
KEY: “WHEN you walk...” — it’s not a matter of “if” you walk through the fire, but rather “when”
A few verses later, God comforts us and says...”Fear not, for I am with you;” ()
Isaiah 43:5 ESV
5 Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you.
Lesson: when you go through the fire, God is there with you, making you stronger, deeper in Him
We die to live, but how do we “wake” ourselves up from this dormant state?

Wake Up the Seed

What three things does a seed need to grow?
Light
Food
Water

Light

The Light of the World

John 8:12 ESV
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Jesus is the source of light that will allow the seed in us to grow!

Growing Towards the Light

If you have ever watched or examined a plant as it grows, which direction to plants, trees, shrubs grow?
UP — towards the Sun, the light.

Lesson: we should all be growing and pointing towards the light.

Living Among the Light

John 12:35–36 ESV
35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.
As we dwell (spend time with) with Jesus, we become “sons of light” - as in we are then able to carry light where we go!
Notice also the consequence if we are not dwelling with Jesus — “the darkness will overtake you.”
We become able to help others grow — this is the whole idea of discipleship!

Light in Heaven

& tell us that...God IS light — in Heaven there is no darkness because God is there and He is light.
Revelation 21:23 ESV
23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.

Food from Light

Isaiah 60:19 ESV
19 The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
Plants are so amazing, they can create their own food, but need light in order to do so!
Literally God IS light — in Heaven there is no darkness because God is there and He is light.
What is this process called?

Photosynthesis
If you have ever watched or examined a plant as it grows, which direction to plants, trees, shrubs grow?
Lesson: As we continue to look towards Jesus, dwell with Him, read His word, pray — all of the sudden our spiritual bodies will be fed!
UP — towards the Sun, the light.

Water

VIDEO: Plants Growing Towards Light

Samaritan Woman at the Well ()

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHe7y8cy-7Y
Samaritans (woman) didn’t associate with Jews (Jesus)
Lesson: we should all be growing and pointing towards the light.
This woman didn’t even feel worthy enough to draw water during the “normal” time — this is why she is drawing water in the middle of the day, when it’s the hottest
This woman had been watering her life with water, but it was the water that they world gave — wouldn’t you know that she still found herself thirsty
Jesus offers her “Living Water” — based on the name, I would expect this water to give life!
The result is that whoever takes the water Jesus has to give — they will then have living water flowing from them!
Lesson: the water is not for us to hoard, but will allow us to grow, in turn, we are able to help others grow!

Rivers of Living Water ()

The Feast of Tabernacles is going on — part of this feast was to pour out water on the altar, daily to remind people of the water God miraculously provided to a thirsty Israel that was wandering in the desert.
Jesus stands up and calls the people to Him (most likely in this moment of pouring the water out), and says that He can satisfy the inner thirst of man!
The Result: Our of their hearts would flow rivers of living water!
Lesson: the Spirit is not only meant to come in, but also to go out from you to help others grow!

Warning from Jeremiah ()

Jeremiah 2:13 ESV
13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.
The people committed two evils:
They ignored the living water
Made cisterns (barrels to collect water) for themselves, but they were broken and couldn’t hold any water at all!
Lesson: if not careful, we can go after the world’s water that leaves us thirsty and never satisfied.

Growth in the Beginning

From the beginning of time and creation, God made the resources for growth to occur.
Genesis 1:1–3 ESV
1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
God Creates the Heavens & Earth
The Earth was formless and God’s Spirit hovered over the waters
We have water
The first thing God “lets” is light
From the beginning, God gave enough resources for growth to occur!
Growth & Reproduction was always intentional and part of the design for God’s creation!

Dormant Destruction

Inaction
You remain dormant, and the destruction takes place in your heart and in your life.
You are never planted, you never reproduce, you never live up to your potential.
Action
You plant yourself, allow yourself to grow, and reproduce God throughout the world.
This results in destruction of the enemy!
