What’s the big deal?

So, we’re definitely going to look at a cultural topic tonight real quick before break out groups…because it connects with you guys in way too real of a way to let it go
Let’s lead with this so I know what I’m working with context wise:
Who in here has heard of Judge Kavanaugh?
Let’s briefly explain this:
On Thursday, there was a hearing scheduled for Kavanaugh, who has been put up to become a judge on the Supreme Court
But there was a hearing scheduled with the senate committee because a woman came out with allegations that this judge had sexually assaulted her in highschool
And so this hearing was a chance to hear her story, and to hear his story…and for millions of Americans to watch it live as it happened
And just so you understand, this was over 35 years ago that this allegedly happened
And I’m not going to focus in on the sexual allegations…just know that they are there
But I am going to focus in on why I wanted to talk to you guys about this tonight
All day Thursday, both Kavanaugh, and Ford, but mainly Kavanaugh, had to defend themselves…and I want to talk about Kavanaugh
The main pieces of evidence they had to use against Kavanaugh was a high school year book, a calendar, and that was pretty much it
and let’s be clear i’m not weighing in on who i think is right or wrong…just on the thought that has been running through my head since thursday
So let’s talk about the year book
In his year book quotes, there are so many references to alchohol
And there are references to a lot of parties
And in his calendar he has always kept, there are a lot of references to parties and alcohol and so forth.
and all the questions seemed to be coming from these quotes
“If you drank so much is it possible you just don’t remember doing something”
“Why did you drink so much”
“Were you a violent drunk”
And i’m watching this and he never really answers the questions…he does in a way, but instead what he does is talk about the good things he has done in life:
and he has had a very successful career since college…i mean he’s about to become one of the most powerful people in the united states
Side point and something you can discuss in your small groups: “Is alcohol ever a good idea?”
Now, that’s the premise of where my mind has been:
Here’s what I want you guys to understand
The choices you make now, the things you are doing now, the decisions you make....have the potential to drastically alter your life…either now, or in the future
And they have the potential to destroy your life....both earthly and eternally
“ For our transgressions are multiplied before you, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and we know our iniquities:”
Even if Kavanaugh didn’t do this....his character has been destroyed partly because of the choices and things he chose to do in high school
And guys, this is in black and white print in an old year book....not on an internet based system where every single thing is tracked!
The things you are doing right now can and will affect your life
The friends you are keeping right now can and will affect your life
The things you do online right now can and will affect your life
So let me ask you this: “If I had the ability to pull up a history of the things you have done, and you had to sit here before everyone and defend them, what would we find out?”
If I pulled out your phone and went through history…what would we find?
If I talked to your friends and asked them questions…what would they say?
There is one more verse I want you to consider:
I want you to realize tonight and discuss in your small groups this fact: that at the end of your life you will give an account for what you have done!
There are books in heaven, that give an account of every single person that has ever lived…and the yearbook, if you will, will be pulled out and gone through
The friends you kept and the things you did with them will be known
The things you did online will be fully known
The things you did with your life will finally come out in the light
