They were directed to rephidim, because of the direction they were expecting Water but there was none for them to drink. So they begin to argue with Moses, Text clearly show that God commanded them to go there, but they began to argue with Moses. And they wind up getting their self in trouble with God arguing with Moses.
What the Children of Isreal don’t get is; nothing is going to happen without Moses.
Raphidim was the place that God used to prepare the children of Isreal, they have experienced to much for their faith in God to be so immature. They have seen the plagues that God caused for them, they have experienced manna from heaven, they have experienced Gods supernatural hand. They have seen to much to still have such weak belief in Yaweh.
Some of us overreact when you get to a place of discomfort, complain, fret, because truthfully we must understand that you have seen this before. Rephidim also is the Final Stop before the Children of Isreal got to Sinai.
God used this Moment to reestablish the relationship between the people and the leader. After the people get distracted by their present circumstances they then begin to blame their discomfort on their leader.
OUTER CIRCUMSTANCES WILL EXPOSE INNER BELIEF! What you see will expose who you are and what you believe. their circumstances change their perspective again of Moses. They began to see Moses as an enemy! They were so mad with Moses because of the place that they were in.
If they would have only understood that the place that they were in was so that God can align them with Leadership. If they would have found water in rephidim then they would have gotten comfortable and stayed where they were; but since there was no water they had to go to Horeb which was also known as Sinai, which is the place that they were purposed to go.
Even though they thought that thirst was going to kill them; being thirsty is the thing that caused them to continue to the place of promise.
