The setting, David had been pursued by Saul.
And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?” And Saul eyed David from that day on.
David had fled to the Philistines, but found himself among the enemies of God. (he also had Goliath’s sword).
What should we learn from David about dealing with distress, depression, and desperation.
Make Your Supplication to God
Make Your Supplication to God
When David was in deep distress, he turned to the Lord and presented his case.
records David’s prayer when we was in the cave.
Psalm
A Contemplation Of David. A Prayer When He Was in the Cave. I cry out to the Lord with my voice; With my voice to the Lord I make my supplication. I pour out my complaint before Him; I declare before Him my trouble. When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, Then You knew my path. In the way in which I walk They have secretly set a snare for me. Look on my right hand and see, For there is no one who acknowledges me; Refuge has failed me; No one cares for my soul. I cried out to You, O Lord: I said, “You are my refuge, My portion in the land of the living. Attend to my cry, For I am brought very low; Deliver me from my persecutors, For they are stronger than I. Bring my soul out of prison, That I may praise Your name; The righteous shall surround me, For You shall deal bountifully with me.”
God invites us to be specific in our requests to him.

Serve Those God Brings to You
Serve Those God Brings to You
God brought to David people who needed help, provision, encouragement, and protection. This seems like an odd seeing as they were the very things that he needed from the Lord.
God will often allow us to go through trials in order to encourage others who are facing similar circumstances.
David’s family needed protection, David was tasked with providing it. In the process he saw God was his Deliverer.
I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of destruction assailed me; the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.

Those in distress needed help. In helping them, David found God was his strength.
Those in debt needed provision. In leading them, David found God was his rock, his refuge.
Those who were discontented needed encouragement. By encouraging them David found God as the horn of his salvation.

David followed God’s leading (v 5).
David found God was his shelter from the wrath of Saul (v 23).
Incredibly, Jonathan was able to locate David in the wood, but Saul with all his spies was unable to find him.
And Jonathan, Saul’s son, rose and went to David at Horesh, and strengthened his hand in God.
1 Samuel 23:
