Philippians 4:6–9 ESV
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Phil
message about peace
cannot of the peace of God if you only have a piece of God
I have some irrational worries:
snakes
sharks - dolphin
young people worry about: grades - college - right job - perfect spouse - start family - kids - school struggle can not help - fail - drugs, sex, rock - STD’s & meth, - not going to be a good mom or dad - won’t be able to provide
all over a grade on a test
can’t keep up - tired all the time -
whenever your anxious, afraid, worried
there is a small almond shaped part of your brain that kicks into full gear
snake run
this part of your brain is not objective
hard wired to protect
there is another part of your brain that is the logical part
hear a noise at night
1st- we are going to die
2nd- no it’s probably that annoying cat
layed in the floor of the shop to work on a car
snake chilling looking at me INSIDE the shop
jumped up then I thought - prolly a garden snake
got a shovel and put all for sections of him in different parts of the field
we worry about too much
Jesus didn’t say let your hearts be troubled (do not)
Paul didn’t say to be anxious about everything
Philippians 4:6 ESV
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
so when we struggle with worry sometimes we get to the point when we will say
ALL WE CAN DO NOW IS PRAY - can you imagine God’s repsonse to that
PRAYER IS POWERFUL
not only does it move the heart of God
it changes the chemistry in our brain
Dr. Caroline Leaf said:
“It has been found that 12 minutes of daily focused prayer over an 8 week period can change the brain to such an extent that it can be measured on a brain scan”
just as negative throughts are toxic and hurt brain
prayer heals - renews - keeps us from being conformed to the world
prayer box:
do what I can do
Give God what I can’t do
trust God no matter what
Imagine: heart of peace- life of joy- peace of mind- trusting God
It’s possible and IT’S A CHOICE
worry at 2am go and remove the thing that you said that you were trusting God with from the God box
John 14:27 NLT
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
peace not found in anything in this life
peace found in Jesus
we think peace life without conflict
kids asleep
more money in then out
healthy life
this peace is not external where our circumstances change
peace of mind and heart - internal
peace that brings comfort in the storm
Who has prayed for peace?
asking for something that God has already given
Problem is that we have allowed things in our lives to interupt the peace
interuptions 1: missing gratitude
Colossians 3:15 NLT
And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.
what if Paul is telling us the key to peace at the end of this verse
Peace is to be surrounded by the goodness of God
Philippians 4:6 ESV
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
rather than trying to get rid worry start filling your heart and mind with the goodness of God
no such thing as darkenss - absence of light
cold - absence of peace
worry = absence of peace
fill our hearts with something else
I’m too thankful to be worried
think about how good God has been to you
interupting peace 2: unrealistic expectations of self
unrealistic expectations of self
leave me frustrated & shameful
comes from a place of good intentions
leads to discouragement
Jesus says to love nieghbor as self
sometimes we should love our self as our neighbor
we would never say things that we think of ourself to someone else
walk into work...
hey man I really thought that you would be further along in life than you are at this point
to your pregnant friend you are going to be a terrible mom
your buddy who is struggling and living at home with parents
your 42 years old living in your moms basement — good going man!
and we wonder why we don’t have peace
remember what Paul said to think on?
Philippians 4:8–9 ESV
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
connection between our thoughts and our peace
Psalm 139:14 ESV
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
ps 139:
my soul is fully aware
not who I was
not who I will be
this is not that we don’t have goals or dreams
but to stop being unrealistic with what we expect from ourselves
change my thoughts of self to reflect God’s thoughts towards me
interuption 3: unhealthy motivation
difficult circumstances
leaves us chaotic
We cannot be selfish and experience peace
Romans 8:6 ESV
For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
peace and life will flow through us when our primary focus is to seek God’s plan & will
Philippians 2:3 NIV
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
learning to to make things about something more than just me
shifting our ambition to what can God do THRU ME
what if the path to peace isn’t what we can get but in what we can give
maybe you feel like God has withheld something from you
