1 John 5:3 Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.
This sermon concerns our love for God.
His love for us is “broader than the measure of man’s mind.”
Contemplating God’s love should call forth from each of us a fullness of love that will mold us according to the divine will.
Our love of God is shown in loving obedience to His commandments.
This is the love of God—our love of Him.
Israel was commanded to love God, because in His love God had brought them out of Egyptian bondage.
The Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 6:5:
Deuteronomy 6:5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.
Jesus renewed the commandment to love God.
Matthew 22:37–38 37 Jesus replied, “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’
38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
God’s love in Christ constrains us to serve.
2 Corinthians 5:14–15 14 Either way, Christ’s love controls us.
Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life.
15 He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves.
Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.
Jesus said in John 14:15,“If you love me, obey my commandments.
How do I know that I love God? Isn’t this a great question?
Negatively—he that hates his brother, cannot love God.
1 John 4:20 If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?
Positively—a forgiving heart is a proof that I love God.
Ephesians 4:31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander,
as well as all types of evil behavior.
The stewardship commandments.
Malachi 3:10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food
in my Temple.
If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the
windows of heaven for you.
I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have
enough room to take it in!
Try it!
Put me to the test!
The missionary commandment.
Matthew 28:18–20 18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.
19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.
And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
The prayer commandments.
Matthew 7:7 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for.
Keep on seeking, and you will find.
Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.
CONCLUSION:
Deuteronomy 6:4–9 (NLT)
4 “Listen, O Israel!
The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.
5 And you must love the
Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.
6 And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am
giving you today.
7 Repeat them again and again to your children.
Talk about them
when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed
and when you are getting up.
8 Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.
9 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
AMEN
