Has anyone ever committed a mistake?

We have all made mistakes in our lives.
Tell about a funny mistake…
Mistakes are messy.
What’s worse is the mistakes we make in relationships. We say things, we .... Those can lead to regret.

Regret - mourn the loss of or to be very sorry for...

Many people when they made a mistake, live life in a perpetual state of regret. The enemy wants you to live with regret and the Lord wants to set you free from regret.
We have all made choices that we regretted. things we said… clothes we wore… hair styles…
Clothes - 70’s polyester suits with big color...
Hairstyles....
People we hung out with…
We all live mistakes and because of that we all live with regrets. God doesn’t want you to live with regret.
Romans 8:28 NLT
28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
When we make a mistake, it makes a mess, and the mess causes us to live in regret. What can you do? (repeat this in different ways)
We know that God causes all things to work for the good of those who love him.
We often will make if only statements… these if only statements mean we are living in the past...

If Only I would have spent more time with

Write answer in your notes.
your kids when they were young?
a spouse who died...
friends...
for some of you… studying in school. when I went to Seminary and looked at my college grades, I thought, they will never let me in here.

If Only I could find the right one.

If only I had not settled for… Some of you might be with Mr Right now instead of Mr. Right
If I could find the right one I would be complete… relationships will never complete you. Some find that our after 5 or 6 Mr. Rights...

If Only I would not have worked so much.

worked too much for … money… approval… accomplishment

If only I would have not treated them like that.

We have all treated someone … more than one in a way we wish we could take back.
ILL - maybe you were a kid and your parents or even grand parents were trying to get you to do something and you disrespected them… maybe you let some words out that you wished you could pull back into your mouth. They deserved respect and you gave them disrespect...
friend who stood up to his dad one day… he didn’t see that left coming.

If only I would have known before I made that decision.

Have you ever made a decision, and gone, wow, If only I had know that before I made that decision? Most of us have.
Kid at school told deputy what are you going to do… tase me… deputy went good idea and tased him.
Maybe you were dating someone (or married someone) that all of your family and friends did not want you to date, but you did not know it. After a lot of heart ache, you go, I wish I had know that before I …

If Only I had not .

Kevin jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge. He said as soon as he let go, He knew he had made a big mistake… he is now a suicide prevention counselor.
I don’t know what your regrets are… You may or may not have one… I think most of us have something were we could go If only I had not...
Regret wants to convince you that you only change if you feel bad enough long enough. When is long enough and how far does it have to go? Just a little more… just be sorry one more day. That’s regret and that’s not a place of life for you.
Regret will rob you of the Grace of God. Regret will lead you into a place of shame and guilt. It leaves you there wishing things could be different. It leaves you in the past.
Regret is a persistent moaning of loss. We don’t want to live there.
Peter regretted…
After last supper… Jesus looks at Peter and tells him that Peter will deny him three times… Peter denies it…
Jesus is arrested and Peter denies even knowing Jesus. Finally a little girl comes and asks him… he curses and denies Jesus.
Mark 14:72 NLT
72 And immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he broke down and wept.
He was broken.
Fast forward. Peter and the guys are fishing. Jesus walks up and asks them, Have you caught anything yet.
John 21:7 NLT
7 Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore.
John 21:17 NLT
17 A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.
Peter disowned him three times. Jesus restored him… confirmed his reaffirmation 3 times.
Jesus was telling him I have something for you to do, and I need you to get out of your regret. Peter was fishing for fish and Jesus needed him to get back to fishing for men.
Some of you, it’s time for you to get out of regret. God has things for some of you that will bring drastic change to you and to those around you. But you have to step out of regret. You cannot live in a perpetual state of regret. You have to step out of it.
We are going to look at 4 things we can do to step out of regret.
2 Corinthians 7:10 NLT
10 For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.
You may have regrets that are holding you back and tying you to the past. Let’s get some godly repentance. How do you make this turn. You can’t straighten out your life, but Jesus can…

1. Really receive God’s forgiveness.

In order to receive something, you have to put down what you are holding onto.
You may not feel like you can be forgiven… or that you don’t deserve forgiveness. You have to REALLY receive forgiveness.
ILL of women receiving engagement ring… You have watched those Hallmark movies where they are so excited they got the ring...
That’s what you have to do with forgiveness.
Psalm 103:3 NLT
3 He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.
Jesus for give how many sins? He heals how many of my diseases?
Some of you think it’s too late for you. You are just the person Jesus is wanting to forgive. There is no warranty expiration date on his love and forgiveness.
Micah 7:18 NLT
18 Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love.
God wants to show you forgiveness. He delights in showing us forgiveness and love.
In a little while, I want you to empty your hands and receive his forgiveness

2. Eliminate the “if only” thoughts.

Eliminate not tolerate...
Sometimes when you have an event at your house or even here at the church, we clean up and at some point, we go… that’s good enough. But it’s not enough. church one time and we missed a balloon. Everyone is watching the balloon instead of listening to the pastor preach.
You cannot tolerate if only thoughts, you have to eliminate them. If you are going to get past regrets, you have to eliminate.
2 Corinthians 10:5 The Message
5 We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ.
You have to make a decision that you are going to refocus… you are going to focus on other things.
Colossians 3:2 NLT
2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.
You may be used to the old story, but you have to stop telling that story.
You have to focus on what God wants. You have to meditate on the WOG.
Say eliminate… eliminate
Philippians 3:13 NLT
13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead,
You cannot drive looking into the rear view mirror.
great quarterbacks… forget the last play

3. Turn Regret into motivation.

There has to be something inside you that knows that God will bring something good out of the situation. You need to know that God wants to give back to you what the enemy has stolen.
2 Corinthians 1:7 NLT
7 We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us.
God wants to take those ugly situations in your life, bring healing into your life and then he will begin to use that through you to minister to others who are experiencing the same things in your life.
God brings us through something so we can help someone else. They become great testimonies and become weapons for the Lord. They are taking the regret and turning into motivation to do something amazing.
He doesn’t say the situation is good, he says God will bring good out of it. God works things for good. You may have trouble believing it, but it’s true. He wants to do amazing things in and through you. You then go share it.
Take your mess and tell Jesus, take my mess and do with it what you want…

The power of a personal story is amazing.

He wants to use you and your story to connect to other people’s stories and to connect them to His story.

4. Let God ????

story of Peter and having his feet washed. Peter told Jesus he could not wash his feet and when Jesus said he had to or he could not have any part… Peter wanted Jesus to wash hi all over.
Isn’t it funny how we always think we know how God needs to fix our situations. We think our perspective is better than Gods…
Just Let God …
Psalm 145:9 NLT
9 The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.
We all have an area where we need to let God (in, trust, have his way, speak thorough you, lift up your eyes, encourage you...
Lamentations 3:22 NIV
22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
What is it that you need to let God? in? in again? encourage you?
Prayer Time
Some need to let him in… maybe your previous relationship was based on how good you could be...
Do a salvation prayer…
Pray for those in the room under the strain of regret… begin to take what’s a mess and begin to make it right. Today
Receive your forgivness
We choose to eliminate the if only thoughts
We will be motivated to do your will in our lives…
You have full access to our lives.
