WHOLENESS
Verse 14 indicates that all ten of the lepers “were cleansed” of their leprosy—they were healed. Verse 19 indicates that the one leper who came back and threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him (17:16) was “made well.” While all were physically healed, the one who came back to Jesus experienced a deeper work of being “made well,” a word most often translated “saved” or “made whole.” It is possible to be free from disease but not be whole. It is possible to be whole and yet have a physical disability. Wholeness involves well-being, spiritual and emotional, not just physical health. Physical healing should never be our primary goal, but rather wholeness. The leper’s return to Jesus to recognize Him as Lord and thank Him demonstrated a deeper level of faith and led to a greater level of personal wholeness. Jesus said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well” (17:19). Obedience brought healing to the others; faith brought wellness to the one.
Living with gratitude, regardless of life’s circumstances, releases God to bring greater levels of wholeness to our broken lives.
