Acts 14:24–28 KJV 1900
And after they had passed throughout Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia. And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into Attalia: And thence sailed to Antioch, from whence they had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled. And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. And there they abode long time with the disciples.
Acts 14:24-2
Introduction
A father took his son to a sporting goods store to purchase a baseball glove. The son looks up at his dad and asked a very interesting question. He said “dad, how does God work through us?” His dad picking up a glove and said “See this glove in my hand? This glove cannot do anything by itself, but when I put my hand inside it, the glove can do many things.
The dad was simply teaching his son that, it is not the glove, but the hand inside the glove that acts. We Christians are like the glove. God working through us is like the hand, who does the work.
The bible is full of examples where God Himself worked mightily through others. You remember in the old testament a man named Moses. Moses was one of the only men recorded in scripture to get close to the face of God. Asking God to let him see his face. God told Moses no one can see my face and live. God gave Moses enough Grace that he placed moses in the clepth of the rock and covered him with his hand and passed by him showing his backside. God working through Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt.
In the new testament the Apostle Paul was zealous for the Jewish religion until he came into the presence of Christ and is now known for 3 missionary journeys, planting churches, writing most of the new testament all by God working through him.
In our modern time Dr. King after launching the Montgomery bus boycott while Pastoring the Historic Dexter Avenue Baptist Church he came home late one night already finding Coretta asleep in the bed and Yolonda asleep in her crib. He thought he could slip into the bed without awaking Coretta and moments later the phone rang. Dr. King said he picked up the phone and heard an ugly voice on the other end. they told him that they would not only kill him but kill his wife and his daughter. He said because he could not sleep he got up and entered the kitchen to pour himself a cup of coffee. While sitting at the table he asked himself why is he still doing this but then he heard a voice that told him to keep going. God was working through Dr. King.
What about you? What Great Work is God doing through you? It is easy for us to look at the Great Work God has done in creating the universe or through others but it is possible for God to do a Great Work through you.
The question is asked “What do we need in order for God to effectively do a Great Work through us?
Background
Our text helps us with this as we are in the Acts of the Apostles where God is reigning King as His word continues to spread and His people are filled with the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit of God working through Prayer
A teacher asked a little boy, “Johnny, tell me frankly, do you say your prayers before you eat?”
Johnny replied, “I don't have to, my mom is a good cook!”
The Spirit of God working through Fasting
The late Leonard Tippi Calaway was a radio personality for 1380 WAOK. Tippi was a big man and told his coworkers that he was going to loose weight. One of his coworkers saw him in a restaurant and said “Tippi I thought you was going on a diet?” Tippi said “I am the next time”. The next time and the next time would turn into the next time over and over again. Tippi finally lost the weight but it was when he decided to turn the plate over.
The Spirit of God working through Grace
Sir Edwin Landseer was one of the most famous painters of the Victorian era. His talent developed early, and he had the first showing of his work at the Royal Academy when he was just thirteen years old. He was commissioned to do a number of official portraits of the royal family, and even gave private drawing lessons to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. But he was best known for his depictions of the natural settings and life in the Scottish highlands.
One day as he was visiting a family in an old mansion in Scotland, one of the servants spilled a pitcher of soda water, leaving a large stain on the wall. While the family was out for the day, Landseer remained behind. Using charcoal, he incorporated the stain into a beautiful drawing. When the family returned they found a picture of a waterfall surrounded by trees and animals. He used his skill to make something beautiful out of what had been an unsightly mess.
Conclusion
God works in much the same way in our lives. The things that we think of as weaknesses and handicaps can, through His grace, become our greatest strengths—and the very things He uses the most to bring glory to Himself. God’s grace provides the strength to meet every challenge and overcome every weakness.
