Introduction:

Passage:
12 And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.
13 He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”
14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them.
15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant,
16 and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read,
“ ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?
“ ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies
you have prepared praise’?

No matter what, in life, there are lesson to be learned by situations we encounter.
Sometimes we miss the lesson because of the what took place within the situation. (Give an example)
Tell the story of my first car wreck .......
end of the story I overlooked the lesson learned (The point that was to be made from the story).
When we read this story (12-16) we tend to miss the point.
We get so caught up in the actions of Jesus (cleansing the temple) it causes us to miss the point.
It’s no so much the cleansing of the temple as it is the temple being cleansed.
The point get lost because of the action!
The point is not that Jesus kicked everyone out of the temple but that the temple needed CLEANSED.
Let me explain ....
Body:
What we are reading is the 2nd messianic act presented by Matthew concerning Jesus.
The term means ...... to describe the prophecies and hope concerning the coming messiah.
The first one we find in Jesus’s Baptism
Jesus enters the “temple area” (Not the building)
Outer most area of the temple “Court of the gentiles”
This is the area were the priest (approve/dis-approve) the animals for sacrifice.
Jesus sees what’s going on .....
Animals not fit to for sacrifice
Money Changers profiting hand over fist off the exchange.
(Was only allowed to use certain kind of money)
Jesus reference them as “a den of robbers”
In this day and time robbers commonly lived in caves
the word “robber” means take by force!
In the cleansing of the temple Jesus was bringing about the fulfillment of And there shall no longer be a trader in the house of the LORD of hosts on that day.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
Jesus (14) then “heals” the lame and the blind IN THE TEMPLE! (This is unheard of)
The chief priest and scribes saw this wonderful thing taking place.
Not the cleansing of the temple
But the healing and the kids Singing Praise to the coming messiah.
They were “Indignant!”
They asked “Do you not hear what they are saying?”
Jesus replies with a “Jewish cultural thing!”
He answers a question with a question.
“Yes, have you not read ....?”
He then reminds them of what they should have been familiar with … !
Climax:
The Story: “Jesus cleansing the temple.”
The Point: “The temple needed to be cleansed.”
Look at what and who was in the temple .....
Workers: money changers, herdsmen
Consumers: those purchasing sacrificial animals
Complainers: Chief priest/scribes (Luke tells of “Principle men of the people.”)
Conclusion:
Looking at this story with today’s lens ....
After Jesus cleanses the temple look what took place.
Worshiping continued (Kids Singing) - worshipers in the Temple
Lame and blind were being healed. - Seekers were allowed back in the temple.
The temple is no more!
WE are the TEMPLE NOW!
The Holy Spirit resides in the believer.
Let me ask the question then this morning ......
“Which one are you?”
The worker?
Worship team member who leaves after the worship set is over/ pays not attention to what is being read?
SS teacher that leaves after class not listening to what is being read from the pulpit?
The Consumer?
The person who comes to GET from Jesus with no interest in GIVING for Jesus?
The Complainer?
Are we still in Matthew? No longer listening to the truth being revealed?
Music/pews/to loud/not enough worship music
But maybe your .....
The seeker?
Remember its because of what Christ did that we have the opportunity to (not just be seekers) but to be FOUND!
The Worshiper?
You have come to acknowledge Jesus Christ as the ONE TRUE GOD!
The King of kings and the Lord of Lords.
Your Redemer
Salvation for ALL!
You have come to worship for no other reason than “HE IS WORTHY TO BE PRAISED.”
