Misdiagnosed Soul

There is no secret to how dangerous a misdiagnoses can be. The people of Israel had the misdiagnosed idea that nothing was wrong with them and the problem was outside of them. They did not have the integrity nor the courage to admit they had sinned and repent. In the opening verses of the chapter Jeremiah explained how wicked they were. V. 5 says they are in “perpetual Backsliding””. (Preach)

We come to a dangerous place where as a nation we can no longer identify our sins. (Preach)

They also believed that because they had the temple and the Lord that consequences wouldn’t follow their behavior. (v.19, 7:4)

Wrongly Prescribed Solution

It is also dangerous to have a sickness and then take the wrong medicine for it. Not only are you not treating the sickness you have, but now you are also harming other places. This is what the Israelites did, this bother Jeremiah so.

The people of God created for themselves gods. Erected idols in place of the true and living God. We have idols too (run)

v.8 begins the indictment of false teachers, prophets, and priest. Who utilized the law to their advantage to the point where God says, “they made it a lie.” (Preach on the importance of Sound Doctrine)

Listen to them (v.20) they had a false hope, that if they prayed to idols and listen to the false teaching of the priest that they would get the promises of God.

Fractured Spirit

There is a break in the spirit of Israel and in the spirit of Jeremiah. He says “for the brokenness of the people i am broken.”

The word broken here is communicating a fracture that has resulted in crippeldness. The people are really down trodden and cant find their way. and if we look at our communities we see brokenness.

But what I like about Jeremiah is that he sees the condition of his people and he does not point the finger but he himself engages in their pain and says I mourn because of this.
