Bible-Centered Sermon Starters 10. Life’s Imperatives

LIFE’S IMPERATIVES

INTRODUCTION: The ideal life is eternal life, life that is divine in quality and eternal in duration. It is the gift of our Lord (see John 10:28). It is the abundant life. It entails some fruitful imperatives.

I. Imperatives for Christ.

A. “I must be in my Father’s house (about my Father’s business—KJV)” (Luke 2:49).

B. “He had to pass through (must needs go through—KJV) Samaria” (John 4:4).

C. “He must go to Jerusalem … and suffer … and be killed and on the third day be raised” (Matt. 16:21).

D. The Son of man must be lifted up (John 3:14, 15).

E. “The Scriptures must be fulfilled” (Luke 22:37; 24:44).

II. Imperatives for Christians.

A. We must be born again (John 3:7).

B. We must obey God (Acts 5:29).

C. We must stand at the judgment seat of Christ (2 Cor. 5:10).

CONCLUSION: A kite’s mission is to fly; to do so, it must be held by a strong cord in the wind. A locomotive, to perform its work, must remain on the rails. For us to fulfill our mission, we must “seek first” the kingdom of God.
