Tools of ignorance. How foolish do you need to be to get behind the plate while one guy throws a hard object at you and another tries to hit that object with a stick. To complicate things there is a guy right behind you restricting your movement. Similarly in ice-hockey a goalie rests in his crease hoping that he is able to keep a frozen hard, spinning, slipping piece of rubber from going into the goal…even if he has to use his face. Expand: The key to this familiar passage is not so much found in the parts as in the whole. Paul says put on the panoply. The whole suit. Mask. Shin guards, chest protector. Big ol' glove. The parts do not function by themselves they are part of the whole suit of armor. And while we are at it maybe we should mention that we are not called to be single soldiers but part of a body, each of us arrayed in the panoply of God.

Ephesians 6:10–20 ESV
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

Paul only hints at what the enemy can do but harps on what we should do! He mentions the methods of the devil and magnifies the means of the Master. He describes the enemy so we know what we are facing but he commands us to be prepared for the ongoing, onslaught of the Kingdom of God against Empire.

The Last Suit you’ll ever need

▾ Tool Time!

•If all your armor is only defensive then your tools become a target. It is training that turns defensive tools in to offensive opportunity. A good catcher keeps runs from scoring with his arm and his skill at calling the game. In hockey a good goalie transforms his ability to turn away shots into frustration, and response.

Paul does not want us to be targets of the evil one he wants us to engage him. Confront him. Invade his territory. Withstand his weapons and rescue the perishing.

• You need to put that armor on every day. Stand ready. Be properly armed. Be alert. When these behaviors become your daily practice God can work through you. Not to protect the Church from the evil one but to inflict the Church on the evil one until he knows for sure that we are proclaiming the victory of the resurrected one over ever square yard of this universe.
