Mark 8:31–33 CSB
31 Then he began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and rise after three days. 32 He spoke openly about this. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning around and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.”

I. God’s way and our way are not the same.

Mark 8:31–32 CSB
31 Then he began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and rise after three days. 32 He spoke openly about this. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

A. Jesus came to live righteously, die, rise again, and from love give salvation to men.

Illus: The ultimate goal end of God’s work will be his dominon over the world.
In the last day every knee will bow in heaven, on earth and under the earth, and every tongue will confess that Jesus CHrist is Lord.
In fact, with God being sovereign, He could force every knee to bow today, but that is not his will.
If this happened, God would force every knee to bow through the overwhelming power of his wrath.
That said, God’s plan is not that he would force every knee to bow, but in love let us willingly come before him in worship.
Peter was looking for a power solution, Jesus saw a gospel solution.
John 3:16–17 CSB
16 For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
16 For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

B. We seek God’s rule all the wrong ways.

Illus: back when I was single, I serving as the youth pastor of FBC Pearsall, the church George Strait grew up in.
Pearsall like vidalia was a farming town, so one of the benifits was always having fresh vegetables.
One day at the office a church member dropped in with bag full of okra. so I decided to fry the okra.
I got a cook book (recipies on the internet were not that big a thing back then), went to the store bought all the ingredients to make the okra.
When I got home that night I put the oil in the pan, breaded the okra, put the okra in the pan.... and then turned on the heat.
You might have all the ingredients, but if you do it the wrong way, you don’t end up with the right result.
The hardest thing for the disciples to catch was that God was not coming to change the world through force, but instead through sacrifice.
Acts 1:6–8 CSB
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:4–8 CSB
4 While he was with them, he commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the Father’s promise. “Which,” he said, “you have heard me speak about; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days.” 6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you restoring the kingdom to Israel at this time?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority.
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

II. What are you passionate about?

Mark 8:33 CSB
33 But turning around and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.”

A. Is God a tool to be used for your agenda?

Mark 8:33 CSB
33 But turning around and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.”
Illus: What the disciples got wrong is that they were still driven by their own agendas.
Yes, Peter understood who Jesus was. Yes, they followed Jesus, but Jesus was a means to and end for them.
They still saw God as a means of bringing their nation back to a place of prominance.
They saw Jesus more as a military messiah than a sacrificial lamb.
Jesus did not let the disciples take the mission from him.
We must not either.
Jesus is not a means to an end for us. He is the means and the end.
James 4:3–4 CSB
3 You ask and don’t receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. 4 You adulterous people! Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God.

B. God’s concerns or your concerns?

Mark 8:33 CSB
33 But turning around and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.”
Illus: To quote the great oklahoma poet Toby Keith,
We talk about your dreams and we talk about your schemes Your high school team and your moisturizer creme We talk about your nanna up in Muncie, Indiana We talk about your grandma down in Alabama We talk about your guys of every shape and size The ones that you despise and the ones you idolize We talk about your heart, about your brains and your smarts And your medical charts and when your day starts You know talking about you makes me grin But every now and then
I want to talk about me Want to talk about I Want to talk about number one Oh my me my What I think, what I like, what I know, what I want, what I see I like talking about you, you, you, you usually, but occasionally I want to talk about me I want to talk about me
This seems to be the way the world turns, I listen to people talk about all of their ideas, concerns, hurts, and then when I talk I share my ideas, concerns, hurts,, etc.
If we all looked carefully at our lives, both our conversations with each other and with God in large part revolve around our own cares, concerns and self needs.
Illus:
Colossians 3:1–4 CSB
1 So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

III. God’s way should be our way.

Mark 8:33 CSB
33 But turning around and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.”

A. Doing the right thing the wrong way makes it the wrong thing.

Matthew 4:8–10 CSB
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus told him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.
Illus: Jesus didn’t just tell peter that he was satan, he defined the road peter needed to walk.
It is the same road we need to walk today. It is the hope for our country, it is the hope for our family. It is the answer to what is deeply wrong inside of us.
Mark 8:34–36 CSB
34 Calling the crowd along with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me and the gospel will save it. 36 For what does it benefit someone to gain the whole world and yet lose his life?
