ANNOUCEMENTS:
MEMBER MEETING SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11 4-5:30PM
Welcome
For several weeks we’ve been in a series covering our church’s RHYTHMS: How do we live?
What do we prioritize?
What do we believe?
What does it look like to live as a Christian?
What can you expect from us at Veritas?
It’s critical for us to wrestle through these things because if God made the world then it’s important for us to know how he’s created us to flourish in the world — how has God communicated to us?
God has communicated through the written words found in the Bible & more explicitly through the person and work of Jesus Christ.
So we look at Scripture and we prioritize what God prioritizes.
We said we’re founded on the GOSPEL!
We are made to (1) WORSHIP God alone!
God welcomes us into (2) COMMUNITY with himself and with other Christians.
Jesus came as a servant!
We are to be (3) SERVANTS!
Last week we examined the rhythms of (4) LEARNING.
The word for disciple is synonomous with this idea of a learner.
We never arrive, we’re always becoming — and the hope is to become more and more like Jesus!
Today will be our last day in this series and we’re covering our rhythm of MISSIONS.
If you’re able, please stand with me for the reading of God’s Word!
Today, we’re going to (1) present a theology of mission, (2) argue that the Bible calls all Christians to be missionaries in their particular context, and (3) close by reflecting on worship & doubt.
Theology of Mission
matthew 28:
Go
TO TRAVEL, TO GO OUT —> This is an action!
God is a God who ACTED in the world.
Not only did God create, but God inserted himself into his creation… and did so humbly!
phil
God left the perfection of Heaven, to be with us.
He left the perfect relationship with Father, Son, Spirit — to be with us!
Jesus, being God, TOOK on FLESH!
What we need to recognize here —> Is that God, is a missionary by nature!
God left Heaven on a mission, with a purpose!
Jesus didn’t have to humble himself.
Jesus didn’t have to meet us where we are… Jesus didn’t have to provide a way for us to know God and be saved from our sins.
BUT HE DID DO ALL OF THIS! AND THIS IS GOOD NEWS!
Incarnation
Define
incarnation: The act of God the Son whereby he took to himself a human nature.
[EX] I’ve heard a pastor say — “the incarnation shows us that God left the beautiful and luscious suburbs of heaven to come down into the city of the world… for us.
To be with us.”
Jesus gave up comfort, perfection, relational connection with the Father and Spirit… to be with us!
This is significant!
Do we realize we WOULDn’T have a chance if Jesus had not humbled himself, and came to be where we are?!
So why do we ever feel like we’re better than anybody else?
Why are there certain places we just WON’T Go?
I won’t go there!
I won’t talk to those people
I won’t do ministry amongst those people
They’re dangerous, they’re scary
THANK GOD THAT JESUS DID NOT RESPOND THIS WAY TOWARDS US!
Jesus went straight for the poor, the broken, the sinners, the pariah’s, the outcasts of society!
What implications do you think that has for us?
Because of what he did, what do you think we are called to do?
The theology of Incarnation is about Jesus coming down to dwell amongst us!
Imputation
Define
When we say that God imputes Christ’s righteousness to us it means that God thinks of Christ’s righteousness as belonging to us, or regards it as belonging to us.
Jesus was completely sinless, righteous.
He did everything right!
On the cross, he took our sin and gave us his RIGHTEOUSNESS — This is what imputation means.
[EX] Essentially, imputation points to the reality that God gave us what he deserved!
But he does more than give us his righteousness, he invites us to his mission.
Global or Local?
This is one our trickiest rhythm because people hold different definitions of “missions” both within congregations and between congregations.
Most think it has to do with sharing the gospel, but people typically have their own specific ideas in mind about what that should mean or look like.
Most talk about gospel proclamation and making disciples.
Some are specific to say “unreached,” but

people don’t mean the same thing when they say “unreached.”
Some people mean unreached people groups.
Some people mean overseas.
And other people mean people who haven’t heard the gospel and could be found anywhere.
At West, people talk about neighborhood outreach when referring to missions.
They talk about reaching broken people and discipling them.
At West, people talk about neighborhood outreach when referring to missions.
They talk about reaching broken people and discipling them.
The answer might seem to simple: BOTH.
MISSIONS are local and global.
I recognize, as a young church, we have not stressed global missions up to this point and that is an area we need to grow.
So that is something we want to begin exploring as we move forward.
But, as we’ve said and what we know —> is that mission is done whenever we act out this intentional way of living where we proclaim the Gospel of God with our words and with our life.
The Missionary Calling of Every Christian
matthew 28:
Making Disciples
Last week we talked about how the word disciple alludes to the word learner — a disciple is a learner… a learner of what?
A disciple is one who is devoted to learning about God, loving God, and living for God in all things!
So this mission has an aim!
Jesus’ mission was aimed at making a way for sinners to be in relationship with God… He pursued us when we were enemies!
We didn’t earn God’s grace… he came down out of choice!
Now he calls us to pursue others with the same purpose!
To model Jesus, to speak of Jesus, to invite others into the family of God!
So part of the mission is: MAKING DISCIPLES
Formal
mentoring
bible study
accountability group
coaching
