The Baptism of Jesus
The Baptism of Jesus
9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.
INTRO: As we look at the baptism of Jesus today, we see cover three points. These points are how we need to live our lives as believers.
His Obedience
His Glory
His strength
1. Jesus spent the first 30 years of his life in Nazareth. Now we see Him in the gospels for the first time as a adult.
a. Gospel of John: Andrew had seen Jesus, and found his brother Peter “we have found the Messiah”
b. Philip was there too, and found Nathanael and tells him “we have found him, the one the prophets wrote about.
46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
c.Nazareth, small town with a reputation of being not so good. That is why he made this statement.
d. We don’t hear about the life of Jesus growing up, other then the time His family was in Jerusalem (passover) when He was 12.
f. A full a day after they were on their way home, I could not find Jesus, thinking he was with others.
g. When they find Him, He was with great teachers, listening and asking questions.
(Homework)
h. He had spent His life in His home town, waiting for His time to come. Now He was at the Jordan river to be baptist by JTB and start his work as the Messiah.
21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
2. Jesus waited until all the people were baptist. Busy day for JTB, people lined up to be baptist.
a. It was time for Jesus to begin to do what He was sent to do.

I. His Obedience
I. His Obedience
9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.
13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
Forbad: To hinder all together, to utterly prohibit. Mat. is the only gospel that records John’s reluctance to baptist Jesus.
John attempted to persuade Jesus to not demand baptism of him.
a. Not only was Jesus being obedient here,JTB had to be obedient, even when he didn’t understand.
a. John had already expressed his unworthiness to serve Jesus in the most menial task. So it’s no wonder he felt unworthy to baptise the one he was preparing the way for.
2. The question is, why was Jesus baptist?
a. If John’s baptism was for the repentance of sin, and Jesus had no sin, why was He baptist?
b. He was not admitting that He was a sinner.
“He was number with transgressors.
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great,
And he shall divide the spoil with the strong;
Because he hath poured out his soul unto death:
And he was numbered with the transgressors;
And he bare the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors.
Isaiah

21 When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened.

2. We have the Spirit, (Holy Spirit) in us. We have to be ready to battle.
a. If you are going to share your faith in Jesu with people, be ready. We hope things will go without any problems. But we have to go in full force, because that is what the enemy is doing.
