The make up of the church the gifts pt 2
Welcome
Intro -
Recap
We started this and you learned that the Body of Christ has Jesus as the head and that you and I are made different and equipped differently
1 Corinthians 12:14 NASB95
14 For the body is not one member, but many.
Then we spoke about unity and how you and I are to work together as the Body
See a lot of times I think we as the church do a lot of good things, but I question whether we are accomplishing what God has for us because we are simply not unified, but we do some good things,
see we do good things, and we get tired but we are no more closer to doing what God has called us to do than when we started
we are to be unified church
Ephesians 4:3 NASB95
3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Last week we spoke on a few of the gifts
1 Corinthians 12:4–11 NASB95
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
We spoke on just a few of the gifts, we spoke on Apostleship, Discernment, and Exhortation
This week may go a bit longer, because of some of the things at the end
But like last week we want to cover 3 more gifts and this will wrap up our series the Make-Up of the church
Some of you are excited because we are going to be done talking about the church and you serving in the church, well nope not the case, we will continue to expect you to serve and exercise your gift, God has gifted you with
The first Gift we will talk about this morning
is Prophecy
Now most of us when we think of the gift of prophecy we think of future and people who can see into the future
That is simply not the case
The gift of prophecy is not the gift to look into the future and tell people the future
rather the gift of prophecy is the gift to communicate Gods truth and calls people to a right relationship with Jesus
The way in which the prophets communicate though is not always a compassionate or merciful way, rather prophets tend to communicate in a very black and white
Acts 2:37–39 NASB95
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
Peter is asked and rather than beating around the bush
Peter comes right out with, Peter simply explains the Gospel
Peter also in sharing the Gospel calls out the nation
Repent is not so easy and sometimes difficult, because it means we are turning from what we know
It almost comes off as harsh
Prophecy used in Maranatha is many different ways
Again I could see this in the guiding and direction of different ministries
The next gift is the gift of Mercy
Which is interesting because the gift of prophecy and mercy go very well together, see they complement each other very well
but usually they are not found in the same person because they are so different, yet so very complimenting
Mercy defined is the ability feel empathy for those who are hurting
Do you maybe see how they go together
Prophecy tells those hurting maybe why they are hurting
Mercy is feeling empathy or compassion for those who are hurting
Jesus expresses empathy in
Matthew 9:35–38 NASB95
35 Jesus was going through all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. 36 Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 “Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”
Jesus sees the amount lost people there are and begins to feel compassion for them
Jesus is moved by His compassion that he sends people out and urges us the church to go out because of the lost
The lost of the hurting people who are destined for hell because they do not have a personal relationship with Jesus maybe some of them havn’t been told or some of them have rejected, it is our job though to go and tell everyone because there are a lot of people who are ready to hear and listen
How this could be used at Maranatha, again as an encouragement in the ministry
Also as someone who reminds those of us who are not a mercy to have mercy and grace and compassion for others
The final gift we are going to talk about this morning is
Service
This one is maybe the easiest one to understand
I mean the definition is in the name
If you are gifted in service then you are uniquely gifted to serve others
Some of us that does not come natural and for others it is just natural for them to serve others and guess what church
thats ok because God is the one who uniquely gifts each of us
Defined service is the ability of doing small or great tasks for the greater good of the Body of Christ
We see this gift pictured in
Acts 6:1–5 NASB95
1 Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food. 2 So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. 3 “Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. 4 “But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 The statement found approval with the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch.
We see that they have a need
And do you find it interesting that instead of just picking 7 random people to fill a need, they found 7 people who were uniquely gifted to fill that need
used at Maranatha these are the people are the people in the background
maybe there are not upfront in the ministry, but they are the ones doing the prep work, and cleaning up after
As we bring this series to a close today
I hope by now you have understood the importance of finding out how God has gifted you and then how you can properly exercise with in the Body of Christ at Maranatha
It is more than just filling the need with random people, it is finding the people whom God has uniquely gifted and called to fill that specific need
Church if we are going to fulfill the churches purpose of reaching the lost then we need to exercise those gifts properly
Our invitation is simple if you do not know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior then I want to invite you to the front and there will be people at the front who can pray with you and share with you through scripture that Jesus loves you and died for you and rose again from the grave
Or maybe you are here and need to make a different decision of church membership
or maybe you are here and simply need to spend some time at the altar in prayer
the altar is open
I am going to call Chad and Angela and Randi up front
On Tuesday the 4 of us will be traveling to Pereira Colombia on a Mission Trip/Vision Trip for our church
We are going to see and ensure that God is calling our Church Maranatha Baptist Fellowship to partner with Mike and Tish Jones our friends who are IMB Missionaries down there
We will be sharing our Jesus Stories and our Testimonies
Since this is a new thing for our church
Because our plan is to follow the direction of God and see if partnering with them which would be sending care packages, and send a team down every like 9 months
God gives some direction when sending people out
Matthew 10:16–20 NASB95
16 “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 “But beware of men, for they will hand you over to the courts and scourge you in their synagogues; 18 and you will even be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 “But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to say. 20 “For it is not you who speak, but it is the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
So Chad, Angela, Randi and myself
This church under the direction of Jesus is sending you out into the world into the midst of wolves
Be wise, and innocent
If they arrest us or have questions for us, do not worry or become anxious with how to answer
Jesus will give us the answer needed, in that time
It is Jesus who speaks for us
