Prayer
Introduction:
Joseph’s circumstances are unique because of the intensity of his brothers’ resentment, the magnitude of their actions, the severity of the consequences he suffered, and the amount of time he suffered. All of us have been resented; few have actually had people plot to kill them. All of us have had people harm us; few have been sold into slavery or been imprisoned falsely as a result. All of us have had to endure hardship; few of us have had to do so intensely and without relief for decades. And certainly most people who have experienced these things have not experienced them all at once!

Forgiveness

FORGIVENESS Term used to indicate pardon for a fault or offense; to excuse from payment for a debt owed.

Terminology The two main terms for forgiveness in Hebrew are nasaʾ, “to take away (sin)” and salach, “to pardon.” God is always the subject of the latter. The LXX expands the OT’s forgiveness vocabulary to 20 terms. The NT expresses forgiveness with a select group of words, especially aphiemi.

Forgiveness- and a true understanding of what it is and what it is not, effects our view of salvation...
If we do not understand horizontal forgiveness we will never understand vertical forgiveness …Voddie Baucham
As you talk with other Christians and see how they view this topic you will see the reason they struggle with assurance of salvation it is because they are unforgiving people who look at others who can almost never gain forgiveness from them they also feel that they can never gain forgiveness from God. They are those who are always ready willing to break fellowship and get angry and to pounce on anyone who wrongs them (both with words and actions) they assume that God is also this way…Therefore causing them to have a hard time receiving , embracing, and walking in the forgiveness of God...
This will lead to mis understandings of our view of the Gospel…~Voddie Baucham
Forgiveness…effects all of us…and one of the most important issues of the Christian life…It effects us daily…and we will either be forgiving people or bitter people...
This effects your marriage relationship
Sibling relationships and Parent child relationships
Christian Friendships...
Some of us today are allowing even people who are dead to control us in this areas...
i.e. my biological father...
Aside from the forgiveness we see Jesus displaying in the scriptures, this narrative is next in line.
Today we will look at the scene and the culmination of events as Joseph reveals himself finally to his brothers…
Juda passed the test…where the others failed he finally rises to the place of leadership in this family...
We will look at the aspects of forgiveness…what it is and what it is not...
We also need to consider other possible situations that people are dealing with in regards to this issue for example:
What if Judah and no one steps up to pass the tests but in fact lets Benjiman be taken into slavery?
?? Stevens Speech

9 “And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him 10 and rescued him out of all his afflictions and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household. 11 Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food. 12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit. 13 And on the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to Pharaoh. 14 And Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five persons in all. 15 And Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, he and our fathers, 16 and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

Moses…also was rejected…by the leaders…yet Gods plan continued on...
51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”

Verses 1-3
Look at the surprise from the brothers…they were in fact speechless...
They did not even hear the second question...
He sends out all the Egyptians
Leaders in this culture were to be resolute and composed
Protection for his brothers...
Speaking to them in their own language…Benjamin hears for the first time what really happened to his brother...
How could they not recognize him?
Everything begins to make sense …the tests…etc.
Verses 4-8
Joseph calls them in close…they get a close up of him and see it is him…what a moment...
This is a place where we Gods sovereignty and mans responsibility
You sold me into slavery…but God sent me before you
You are responsible for your actions…but God works even through those situations...
Read Genesis 50:15-21
God’s Good Purposes
God’s Good Purposes
15 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.” 16 So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died: 17 ‘Say to Joseph, “Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.” ’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. 18 His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” 19 But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? 20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. 21 So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

Commentaries on the Pentateuch: Genesis Chapter Sixty-Three: Joseph Reveals Himself (Genesis 45:1–28)

There had been two years of famine, with five more to come, during which there will be neither planting nor harvesting (v. 6). God, said Joseph, “sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance” (v. 7). Joseph views his life and his sufferings theologically, not personally. Few would have had more justification for stressing the personal aspect, his suffering and grief, than Joseph, but he saw all things in terms of God and His purpose. He now urges his brothers to do the same. It was not they but God who sent him to Egypt and made him great there to save them all (v. 8). God used their sin to bring forth good. This did not acquit them of evil, but it did set forth God’s providence.

Verse 8...This perspective was how Joseph was able to persevere…he kept his eyes, thoughts, actions, etc. on God
This is an especially significant passage, for it teaches us that the true course of events is never disturbed by the wickedness and malice of men; that, on the contrary, God directs men’s confused and turbulent movements to a good end. Also it shows us how we ought to think of God’s providence and how we are to profit from it. ~John Calvin

Application: When we come to those places in our lives that are the most difficult we too have a choice to make
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
Are we going to trust our God (who is always trustworthy)?
Are we going to focus our thoughts, words, and actions on our circumstances and drift off course?
God is not surprised about your situation…press into Christ…trust Him…He will never leave you nor forsake you…
guard your heart…be careful who you allow to speak into your life…especially when you come to a cross road in life...
Those are the times where the enemy is lurking to cause doubt, gain a foothold with false doctrine, and draw you away from those who God would want you to be closest too in this time..
Verses 9-15
Hurry…go get my Dad…I want to see him...
Joseph wanted his family near him...
God has redeemed many of us and forgiven us for so much...and He wants to be near to you

Come to Me, and I Will Give You Rest

25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Notice: Joseph did not just say the words and then act coldly towards his brothers ~Voddie Baucham
Observation: He had the financial/resourceful means to provide for them and he did it…no strings attached...
He demonstrated Christian love and kindness...
Can you imagine…Joseph missed his dad>>
Fathers…can I say here that even though you are not perfect and even though you have made mistakes…you are still important to your children...
i.e. my own dad...
Prison statistics…relation to their fathers
I would challenge you today dads…take this role seriously…make it a point to daily be invested in the spiritual guidance and training of your sons and daughters...
Kids…remember that your dads have a tough job…and that they will be held accountable for how they have raised you, and the direction they have set before you…so as they attempt to lead you biblically honor your father and mother…
Notice verse 15...His brothers talked with him...
Before this…there was much tension between them…these brothers wanted nothing to do with Joseph before this moment…they mocked him
But now they were able to have a conversation…what a moment...
Some of you today have experienced this kind of reconciliation and you can relate to Joseph
Others of you today are in a position today where you have not be reconciled
Others of you today are struggling with this concept of forgiveness and how it should look...
We will clarify in a moment some of these concerns...
Saints…can I mention something here…some of you even within your own family treat each-other like Josephs brothers did...
Can I go a step further…some of us are like that with the family of God…our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ…If we call ourselves Christians should we not be reaching out to one another in the body here at PCC…We need to make the effort to get to know one another, and that takes dialog…period...
Joseph felt this type of resentment and silence from his brothers…and now the silence was broken…lets all make an effort weather at home or in the family of God to dialog with other people…take the time to listen and pray and minister to one another…that is attractive to a world that is so stuck on me, myself, and I...
Some Clarification—Pastoral Observations:
Forgiveness does not only take place when someone asks to be forgiven
Josephs brothers did not even know it was Joseph…they did not ask for forgiveness
Jesus
...25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
Do you realize how many sins we commit that we are not even aware of…omission…God does not only forgive us for the sins we acknowledge as Christians....

Forgiveness does not mean that you forget...
If you are having trouble remembering things that is a mal-function of the brain
Human beings were not created to forget ~Voddie Baucham
If you could forget you miss the power in the forgiving…I remember yet I am still not going to punish you for what you did…Joseph remembered what they did...
God removes our transgressions as far as the east is from the west
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11  For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

He does not deal with us according to our sins,

nor repay us according to our iniquities.

11  For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;

12  as far as the east is from the west,

so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

13  As a father shows compassion to his children,

so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him.

so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12  as far as the east is from the west,

Psalm 103:13

13 As a father pities his children,

So the LORD pities those who fear Him.

Saints…by Gods grace you and I can forgive even some awful offenses towards us...
Forgiveness is not to be used as a weapon...
If you find yourself reminding the person who sinned against you that you did forgive them…and almost give yourself a pat on the back…this is not forgiveness..
Forgiveness does not always mean reconciliation-or there may be a change in the relationship:
In our narrative we witnessed reconciliation…but there are situations where this does not happen for i.e.
Forgiving someone who is dead
The other people involved do not see a need for forgiveness or reconciliation…it takes two to reconcile…forgiveness is a one way street…reconciliation is not...
Forgiveness does not mean restored trust...
Adultery…may take time to restore trust... not alone with other women…etc.
Family member molests another family member…May never be allowed to be alone with children…etc.
Forgiveness does not mean that there might not be consequences/etc. that need to be administered by the state and the church…by proxy…substitute
A crime must be dealt with by the authorities...
Turn into the police…yet walk with you through the process...
Much abuse in the church is allowed because we do not get this...
Forgiveness is not an option for a Christian
*Luke 17:12-13

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

**Have an ongoing attitude of forgiveness…no limits

3 Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, 4 and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”

3 Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, 4 and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”

21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Within the church

12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

Prayer for persecutors:

33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

If you will not forgive you will not be forgiven…

14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
