He is the fulfillment of the law. He not on is the one who perfectly kept the law, but also the one who embodies the law, so that through him we are reconciled to God. That’s the new covenant of Grace, instituted by the forgiveness of sin at the shedding of Jesus’ blood for us.
And this new covenant is a covenant that God writes on our hearts… these next lessons from Jesus show the change; the fulfillment of the law.
Deeper sense of fulfillment. Reconciliation.
[begin v 17]
Speed LIMIT. We drive right on the edge. How perfectly do we walk that line?
Last week: Law has not been cast aside.
How do we relate to the law? A way to please God (but no the purpose…)
Speed LIMIT. We drive right on the edge. How perfectly do we walk that line?
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:
Romans 3:
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
(sense is fulfilment)
4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,
redemption. reconciliation.
Our relationship to law:
Are we under Grace or Law?
rich connection between the old and the new… through fulness of Christ.
Live it out as Christ shows us to live it out.
rich connection between the old and the new… through fulness of Christ.
20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
(that was their job....) there’s a better Way. Letter of law (613 of them) vs. Spirit.
Holiness (set apartness) is at stake...
each of [but I say to you] statements are about relationship.
21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
Matthew 5:21
[21/22a only.]
unreconciled relationships.
Teachers have taught you this. I, the author, say to you… “let me give you the fullness”
murder. What is the heart condition underlaying this?
unreconciled relationships.
angry [KJV without cause] or unjust anger.... [just anger is for sin and evil.]
anger.insults.outbursts.
Anger prohibited??
9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.
insults.
outbursts.
19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
“anger of man”
26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil.
Eph 4:
Anger is dangerous. Deal with it correctly. Use it correctly. Focus is rightly. Don’t carry it or harbor it, else it festers, an opportunity for Satan. (means darkness and not light)
Harboring anger/hatred/contempt is devastating to spiritual/emotional/physical health.
feeling validated in your anger / unreconciliation / unforgiveness.
Jesus proclaims severe judgements for these things because they are themselves so severe.
But I say to you...
22b1: insults: evidence of a broken relationship; devaluation; dehumanizing.
22b2: Raca! outbursts/venting: “fool!” “stupid.” “idiot.” harsh words. outbursts. character assassinations.
...how quickly mankind makes the jump from harsh words to violence… internal (spirit) drives the external (law/fruit).
7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
James
23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.
23/24 reconcile: bring back into right relationship. (This is the fullness)
Don’t cover up bad behavior (anger) with good activity (worship).
1sam15 Saul ignores God, then offers worship to God… loses his Kingdom.
18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
what we are keeping, distances us from God. (wash hands / purify heart)
14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
(1 john 11 :whoever hates his brother is in darkness) unreconciled.
Jesus’ example: the gospel - God reconciles to us.
20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
Reconciliation should be played out in us. Kingdom of God is a kingdom of reconciliation. That is the rule we are under...
Another point: Regardless who’s at fault.
23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,
25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. 26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.
Something worse is bound to happen...
Matt 5:23
Wholehearted reconciliation. That’s the message of Fulfillment. Relationship with God; relationship with others.
Love is the fulfillment...
ask for wisdom [toward reconciliation.]
