From Gift of to gifts of

We have looked at the gift “of” the Holy Spirit and now we are going to look tonight at the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit, or from the Holy Spirit if you want to put it that way.
Gift of, promised to all who believe and are baptized (Act2:38-39)
Gift of, is the Holy Spirit Himself (Jn7:39; Act5:32 and Gal4:6)
Gift of pertains to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (1Cor3:16; 1Cor6:19)
From gift to gifts (1Cor12:11;1Cor12:1, 1Cor14:1; 1Cor12:7-11)
F.F. Bruce says it like this, this is a good quote
“We must distinguish the gift of the Spirit from the gifts of the Spirit. The gift of the Spirit is the Spirit Himself, bestowed by the Father through the Messiah; the gifts of the Spirit are those spiritual faculties which the Spirit imparts as He wills”
1 Corinthians 12:11 NASB95
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
Same gifts as noted
1 Corinthians 12:1 NASB95
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware.
These spiritual gifts are given to believers for the common good of the body. So now as we venture into our look at the gifts of the Holy Spirit we want to look at
What were the spiritual gifts?
How did the people receive the spiritual gifts?
What was the purpose of the gifts?
How long were the gifts to last?
Turn to 1Cor12:8-11 and let’s see how we can start answering these questions.
1 Corinthians 12:8–9 NASB95
8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
1 Corinthians 12:10–11 NASB95
10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

I. What were the Spiritual Gifts

In looking at the passage (1Cor12:8-11) you can see the gifts that were given. Keep in mind when these were given. That will be important as we work through each of the questions tonight.
Word of Wisdom (1Cor2:6-10)
Ability to speak the wisdom of God as revealed by Spirit of God
1 Corinthians 2:6–7 NASB95
6 Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; 7 but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory;
1 Corinthians 2:8–9 NASB95
8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; 9 but just as it is written, Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”
1 Corinthians 2:10 NASB95
10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.
The “us” is to the Apostles
Word of Wisdom (1Cor2:6-10)
Word of Knowledge (1Cor14:6)
1 Corinthians 14:6 NASB95
6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what will I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation or of knowledge or of prophecy or of teaching?
Speaking truth, knowledge of the things already revealed by the Spirit. Speaking spiritual truths for spiritual people for spiritual growth
Word of Wisdom (1Cor2:6-10)
Word of Knowledge (1Cor14:6)
To another, Faith (Mk11:23; 1Cor13:2)
Mark 11:23 NASB95
23 “Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him.
mountain moving faith, this is not faith that brings salvation, but faith from salvation that had the miraculous element to it.
1 Corinthians 13:2 NASB95
2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.
Word of Wisdom (1Cor2:6-10)
Word of Knowledge (1Cor14:6)
To another Faith (Mk11:23; 1Cor13:2)
Gifts of healing (Mt10:1)
In looking at Mt10:1 you can see this is the ability to heal all kinds of sickness under the power of the Holy Spirit as given by Jesus.
Matthew 10:1 NASB95
1 Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness.
Word of Wisdom (1Cor2:6-10)
Word of Knowledge (1Cor14:6)
To another Faith (Mk11:23; 1Cor13:2)
Gifts of healing(Mt10:1)
Gift of working miracles (Act19:11)
Extraordinary miraculous power
Acts 19:11 NASB95
11 God was performing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,
Word of Wisdom (1Cor2:6-10)
Word of Knowledge (1Cor14:6)
To another Faith (Mk11:23; 1Cor13:2)
Gifts of Healing(Mt10:1)
Gift of working Miracles (Act19:10)
Gift of Prophesy (Act11:27-28)
In context this is foretelling of the things to come
Acts 11:27–28 NASB95
27 Now at this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them named Agabus stood up and began to indicate by the Spirit that there would certainly be a great famine all over the world. And this took place in the reign of Claudius.
Gift of discerning spirits (1Tim4:1)
To have spiritual discernment on the spiritual origin, spiritual source of a spirit be it from God or of demonic in nature
1 Timothy 4:1 NASB95
1 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,
Gift of discerning Spirits (1Tim4:1)
Kinds of Tongues (Act2:4-11; 1Cor14:18)
Ability to speak in various tongues (known languages) that person is untrained to know (expand on Act2:4-11)
1 Corinthians 14:18 NASB95
18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;
Why would Paul be grateful? Because able to communicate with those he normally would not have been able to communicate with!
Kinds of Tongues (Act2:4-11; 1Cor14:18
Interpretation of Tongues (1Cor14:27)
Ability to understand and interpret various languages
1 Corinthians 14:27 NASB95
27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret;
On Pentecost we saw the speaking in 15 languages, hearing, being interpreted into 15 languages. Remember they are a bunch of Galileen’s who suddenly did this!
These gifts of the Spirit may work with each other, the descriptions given are taken from various sources such as commentary by Jamieson, Faussett and Brown (new sources to me) and I liked what I read, so kept going to see, learn more as I worked on this message.
Paul presents these gifts, these spiritual gifts precisely through the scripture so may we take a minute and look at his description.
They are spiritual, not natural (1Cor12:1)
Differing gifts but from same Spirit (1Cor12:11)
The gifts were visible, audible evidences of the Spirits influence (1Cor12:7)
Not all had these gifts (1Cor12:28-30); some were ungifted (1Cor14:16)
Gifts did not equate to spiritual maturity (1Cor1:4-7); some were still babes in Christ, or carnal in nature (1Cor3:1-4)
Spiritual gifts could be abused (1Cor14:1-5)
They could be used improperly (1Cor14:23)
1 Corinthians 14:23 NASB95
23 Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?
But when used properly they were beneficial to all (1Cor14:26-32)
1 Corinthians 14:26–27 NASB95
26 What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret;
1 Corinthians 14:28–29 NASB95
28 but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others pass judgment.
1 Corinthians 14:30–31 NASB95
30 But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, the first one must keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted;
1 Corinthians 14:32 NASB95
32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets;
If you have not figured it out yet, now you may know that these spiritual gifts that are being addressed tonight are gifts that were a miraculous manifestation of the Spirit.
So, this now leads us to the next question.

II. How did people receive the gifts?

These gifts of the Holy Spirit, some directly from the Spirit, others through the laying on of apostolic hands.
From the Holy Spirit Himself (1Cor12:11)
We have already looked at that scripture tonight, the Holy Spirit distributes the gifts at His will
Given to those who had certain tasks, roles to fulfill (1Cor14:18)
1 Corinthians 14:18 NASB95
18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;
Sometimes at special occasions (Act2:1-4; Act10:44-46)
Acts 10:44–45 NASB95
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
Acts 10:46 NASB95
46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered,
To the laying on of hands (Act8:14-19; Act19:6 and even Rom1:11)
Acts 19:6 NASB95
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.
Romans 1:11 NASB95
11 For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established;
The Spirit was imparted at the laying on of hands but it was the Spirit that distributed, gave the gifts and determined who would receive the gifts. The hands were just a tool that the Spirit used. The power is from the Spirit not the man or the hands at all.
The exact detail as to the reception of the gifts of the Spirit the scripture does not describe, it could be because of the temporary nature of the gifts. But if they were temporary, what was the purpose, and that is our next question.

III. Purpose of the gifts

These spiritual gifts, gifts of the Holy Spirit, had a purpose. To reveal, to confirm and to profit all.
To reveal God’s will and to confirm that it is the will of God (Mk16:17-20; Heb2:3-4)
Mark 16:17–18 NASB95
17 “These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Mark 16:19–20 NASB95
19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed. And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.
After the commission given then the proof of the commission was given. There was going to be visible and audible evidences of the Spirit.
Some to reveal God’s will (prophesy) - Mk16:17-20
Others confirm God’s will (miracles) - Heb2:3-4
Hebrews 2:3–4 NASB95
3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, 4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.
Some to reveal God’s will (prophesy) - Mk16:17-20
Others to confirm God’s will (Miracles) - Heb2:3-4
Gifts revealed truth, or they were no value (1Cor14:6); truth spoken, truth confirmed (1Cor14:5; 1Cor14:9-11)
No greater gift than prophesy, hence why more valuable than tongues
Tongues could be spoken without an interpreter and lead to confusion
Spiritual gifts were an indication that the process of revelation was not yet complete when this was written.
Gifts given were to profit all (1Cor12:7)
1 Corinthians 12:7 NASB95
7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
Gifts were not personal in nature but personally given for the body; given for the benefit of others
Gifts given were to profit all (1Cor12:7)
To instruct and to edify (1Cor14:3-4)
1 Corinthians 14:3–4 NASB95
3 But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation. 4 One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
Gifts given were to profit all (1Cor12:7)
To instruct and to edify (1Cor14:3-4)
To convince unbelievers (1Cor14:22; Act2:4-11)
1 Corinthians 14:22 NASB95
22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.
Spiritual gifts again were for the whole body, not for individuals. This now leading us to the last question to look at for tonight.

IV. How long were the gifts to last?

As noted before the gifts of the Holy Spirit are miraculous in nature. They were important to the first church ever. They bore witness, the provided final revelation and lead to the Spirit that is in us, the fruit of the Spirit that is manifested today.
The spiritual gifts bore witness to God’s Word and the words of His apostles (Mk16:19-20; Heb2:3-4)
They provided the full and final, complete revelation of God and of His will. (2Pt1:3; Jude3; 2Tim3:16-17; 1Cor13:10-13; Gal5:22-23; Jam1:22-25)
2 Peter 1:3 NASB95
3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.
and add to that one
Jude 3 NASB95
3 Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.
We know all scripture is God breathed and is profitable and we know it is complete, and when that happened, those things which were partial were done away with. (1Cor13:11-13)
1 Corinthians 13:11–12 NASB95
11 When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.
before the complete revelvation of God we only saw a partial, we only saw dimly, but now that we have that which is complete, the partial isdone away with
1 Corinthians 13:10 NASB95
10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.
What still remains is the fruit
Galatians 5:22–23 NASB95
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
And the the greatest things
1 Corinthians 13:13 NASB95
13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.
So while these spiritual gifts may not be today; they impact today; and there are many other gifts, talents that the Spirit brings that are not of miraculous nature that are just as necessary today.
May the perfect law of liberty be clearly seen in our lives today (Jam1:21-25)
James 1:21–22 NASB95
21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls. 22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
James 1:23–24 NASB95
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.
James 1:25 NASB95
25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.
