⌛CONTEXT • Ex 30:17-21 Priests must wash after sacrificing before entering tent of meeting ◦ ⌛21 to avoid death → Manifests the extent of God’s holy purity • Ex 40:30-34 Moses builds the tabernacle ◦ ⌛33 Moses finished the work of washing & preparation ◦ 34 God’s Glory came → Spirit & Salvation could not come w/o completed prep ⌛JESUS WASHES DISCIPLES FEET • 13:1 He loved them to the end → Foot washing foreshadowed this ◦ 13:8 If I do not wash you, you have no share with me ◦ 13:12 Do you understand what I have done for you? • ⌛13:15 I have given you an example...do just as I have done ◦ 13:16 Servant not greater than master • Jesus’ followers must serve in the same way he served them ◦ Jesus assumed position of lowliest servanthood to give them what they needed ⌛JESUS OFFERS A MORSEL OF BREAD TO JUDAS • 13:2 “Simon’s Son” was chosen to betray Jesus ◦ 13:8 I know whom I have chosen → Not Judas ◦ 13:2 Judas was chosen by Satan → 13:27 Satan entered him • 13:21 One of you will betray me → Not all followers are faithful • 13:22-25 Who? → ⌛13:26 The one to whom I give this bread ◦ 13:26 Jesus dipped the morsel & gave it to Judas → 13:27 Judas took it ◦ This act “sealed” his betrayal • Judas was near Jesus yet distant → Any guilty Husbands? ◦ James 4:8 Draw near to God and he will draw near to you ◦ Physical and emotional proximity != Spiritual nearness ⌛REDEMPTION REVEALED IN RESPONSE • Bring the two stories together → Foot washing + Betrayal • 13:15 The faithful follow Jesus’ example → 13:16 in humility ◦ 13:17 And are blessed both now and forever • 13:18 Not all are faithful followers → 13:21 One of you will betray me (Unfathomable) ◦ Judas received bread → The Satan entered & carried him into the night (dark) ⌛JESUS OFFERS A MORSEL OF BREAD TO YOU • ⌛13:18 He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me ◦ May this never be said of us ◦ 1 Cor 11 Anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup in an unworthy manner as Judas, eats and drinks judgement on themself. ◦ As you’ve examined yourself this week and this morning, are you prepared to eat and drink by faith? ▪ If so, then come • Judas ate and drank → Then departed into the night • We eat and drink → Then depart into the Light of service to the Lord ◦ For those who come by faith, this meal ▪ ⌛Seals us to eternal life → God’s promise ▪ ⌛Strengthens our faith → God’s provision ▪ ⌛Unifies us → God’s peace
