Sin is an adulteress
Sin in our passage today is painted, described as an adulteress and it is not a pretty picture.
It is grievous, it is immoral and it separates people from God.
There is much we can learn from this chapter regarding the morality plague (lack of morality) in our world and that can even creep into the church.
We need to know it, and take proper precautions against it.
Sin is darkness
Sin is death
Sin can be forgiven
But, sin needs to be exposed
Sin eats at the moral fabric of a person, and it can effect others.
mor·al (adjective) concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or badness of human character.
Our morals set the standard of our beliefs, our behaviors concerning what is right, wrong, acceptable and unacceptable in our lives.
Morals?
Are we living God the standard God set’s or by the world?
Slide: Attention (already saved on computer)
(expand on vv.1-2) - give attention, incline your ear, observe discretion; reserve knowledge, why to be prepared and to share!
For remember sin is an adulteress and can be alluring and it is better sweet.
Sin is bitter sweet
Sin can be alluring, it can be attractive, it can seem harmless.
Scripture talks about the bitter sweet nature of sin.
(hold up a bag of nestle bitter sweet chocolate chips for illustration) - then give personal illustration (Tabby’s dark chocolate brownies)
Sin has an appeal to it (Pro14:12; Pro16:25)
Now the chocolate chips in and of themselves are not sin are they?
But what I do with them can become sin.
What seems O to me, could be a stumbling block to myself or to others.
It can be appealing just because it is forbidden (Gen3:6)
This goes hand in hand with 1Jn2:15-17; don’t love the world or the things of this world, lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life.
Eve, and her husband with her, even though forbidden, tempted themselves and the tree looked good, it was appealing.
But it’s end is the way of death (physical, spiritual)
Because of their sin it led to death entering the world, physical death that we all pay those consequences for, but for them spiritual death, separation from God who they walked in the garden with.
Sin may look and taste sweet at first, but there is a bitter side.
With close observation of sin and the the allure of sin we can see the nature of sin.
When you see the nature of sin you can then count the cost of sin
Sin is best left alone
Sin is best left alone, best to avoid it.
Sin is costly.
Sin is easier to avoid than to extricate.
(Rom7:15-17, 20; Jam1:13-15)
That maybe something that is obvious, but still we may struggle; look what Paul has to say.
Or even what James had to say
Remember we have to count the cost!
Death!
Scripture and godly intuition due to the Holy Spirit gives us lots of god cautions (Eph5:15-18)
In summation, or in my view
Beware how and where you walk
Beware you you hang out with
Beware where you turn to in times of trouble
All of this because Sin will exact it’s price!
Sin always exacts is price
Sin has consequences and God does not hide the consequences from us.
There is certainty because God is just, and God tells us through His Word.
Sin’s exact cost (Rom6:23)
Sins cost could be delayed (Dan4:19-27)
Summarize: the writing on the wall that showed judgment was coming because found lacking; the judgment was delayed for a year.
Sins cost could be slow and gradual
In form of unrest, depression, anxiety
Sin can manifest itself in many ways (Psm32:3-4)
Physically, gnawing remorse , mental anguish
Sin is a thief; stealing what is already yours
Sin wants you to compromise you morals, destroy your character and take your integrity from you.
Don’t let sin steal what is yours!
While broadening the spectrum of this point sin can try to
Steal your salvation (Gal5:1-4)
Steal your joy (Jn10:10)
What else do you think sin can steal from you?
Sin wants you to compromise your morals, your standards.
It was to destroy your character and to steal your integrity from you.
Sin is not as secretive or elusive as you think (Pro4:21) and because of God’s omnipresence we cannot hid anything from Him (Lk8:17)
So a sage piece of advise, something free, don’t do anything in private hat you would not do in public before man and God.
God already knows, already see’s and see’s the things in private and they will come to light.
May we remember too, we be held accountable for our actions, be them good or bad.
(2Cor5:10); so avoid sin and don’t let it steal what is already yours!
Sin is costly; you can be released to it
Unrepented, unconfessed, unchecked sin can put you, or leave you in a lost state.
It may try to tell you things that are not true.
Remember the cost, the wages of sin (Rom6:23)
Sin is deceptive and may try to get you to think you can release yourself from the penalty of sin.
We are called dead to sin (Rom6:1-2) so we cannot continue to sin.
We cannot lead a double life, God is the searcher of hearts (Rom8:27); So may we pay attention!
To the warnings.
Part is remembering who we are too.
(Rom6:3-4) and what we are to do!
and who we are now, as well as what we are to do.
