Romans 5:1–5 ESV
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
My wife was teaching Pre-K and Kindergarten Sunday School a couple of weeks back and an theological argument broke out. It went something like this.
Kid # 1: Jesus is God
Kid #2: Ummmm No, Jesus is God’s Son.
Kid #3: Yeah, what she said
Kid #1: Well God and Jesus are the same but Jesus is God’s son.
SS Teacher: Well you are both right. God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are the same but they are all different too.
Kid #1: See I told you!
Why does the Trinity matter? Why does it matter which one of these Pre-Kers and Kindergarteners is right.
Well to be quite honest our salvation depends on it.
The Trinity has made provision for us through salvation and sanctification. The great theologian Greggory of Nyssa put it this way writing, "But God, who is over all, becomes the Savior of all, while the Son effects salvation by the grace of the Spirit. On account of this they are not named three saviors by the Scripture, although salvation is confessed from the Holy Trinity,"
The Apostle Paul in the book of Romans said it like this in Romans Ch. 5.
Let’s break this down...
vrs. 1 —> We have been justified by faith Paul says. Not by works. Not by heritage. But by faith. How did we get this justification, this peace with God? Through our Lord Jesus Christ, the 2nd person of the Trinity.
By ourselves we can’t achieve salvation. We can’t truly know God or receive God’s grace apart from the saving work of His son Jesus Christ. We need God to be restored to God.
This grace that we stand on was accessed by us through our faith but it was not cheap and it was not free. This grace that is in turn our hope was only available through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. This suffering that we now share in.
verse 3 and 4 say
Romans 5:3–4 ESV
3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
our suffering yields our hope. Without suffering without pain there is no need for hope, but where does this hope come from. If we use the common translation character of the word “dokina” we may would think that it is something that we do or we achieve that gives us this hope. When I think of the word character I think of something I have achieved or accomplished. My character is the product of peoples interpretations of who I am. Instead we need to realize this word “dokina” means testing, or to test, or to examine, to try to determine the genuineness of something. It is not us that produce this hope. It is the situations, the trials, the tests we find ourselves in that we see the real producer of the hope we have.
It comes from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit or the 3rd person of the Trinity is our hope and our strength that we receive by the love of God.
Romans 5:5 ESV
5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
The Father gave us the Son. His son, His one and only son, a most prized possession. The Father and Son together give us the Holy Spirit who by the love of the Father and the Son provides us with hope. Hope to face tomorrow. Hope that God’s glory will still reign no matter the trials we face. The Holy Spirit is responsible for the grace that was before our salvation. We can only know God because He first made Himself known to us.
The creator of the world created us to know Him. God gave us Jesus Christ to make a way for us to know Him deeper, more intimately. The Spirit is the mover that moves us into this relationship and sustains our faith through the love and hope poured out on us by a Father who simply wants to know us.
