SO WHY WOULD WE WANT/NEED TO DO A SERIES ON THE NAMES OF GOD?????
Well we need to start with “why’s the names important?”
To fully grasp this we must understand the power and significance of God’s names, we need to understand the importance of names in Bible times.
In the Old Testament, and New Testament we repeatedly see someones name almost always revealed something important about that persons character…
Names are so important in biblical times that we often see God CHANGING someone’s name to refect a new identity. a new purpose. a new meaning.
Abram (exalted father) to abraham (father of a mulitude)
Jacob (Heel grabber) to Israel (one who prevails) after wrestiling with God.
New testament.... Simon..... “Peter” which means ROCK.... i love this one… jesus named him peter which meant rock but all through the NEW TESTAMENT we see Peter being anything but a rock… he becomes one after the resurrection and filling of the holy Spirit..
Jesus named Peter for who he was going to be..... some of you in here.... jesus has a name for you. who you are going to be.
So to God… in this time especially names are SUPER IMPORTANT....
Learning God’s names and their importance will open up the door to know his character. who he is. his power. his might.
but here’s the thing about God… all these people we just looked at had a name that showed their character and their purpose.
But only one name could NEVER help us understand the greatness of his character! his goodness and might is so much bigger than one name. so therefore he has multiple names.
what i like about it is this.... he has a name for every situation you could possibly face.
when you need victory… he is Jehovah Nissi… (banner of victory) fighter....
when you need a healing… Jehovah Rapha.... our healer...
when you are in need… Jehovah Jireh… God the provider.
The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
Run to the name of the lord.. what name? whichever one we need in that moment! love it.
one name alone could NEVER tell us what we need to know about our God. One name could NEVER represent his majesty and power.
It’s important to know these names because what we think of when we think of God is so important.... what comes to mind when we talk about the Lord is crucial.
So.... we will look at the very first name that we see and introduced to in the Word of God....
Elohim.... our creator.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
God’s first introduction of himself to mankind..
Hello…i am Elohim… we always say that this name just simply means creator… but i LOVE the literal translation of this name… “STRONG ONE”
HELLO… I AM STRONG ONE.... the CREATOR....
“in the beginning God...” He is self existent.... if this is the beginning… god existed before the beginning… no time restraints on God.
now notice he says.... God created the heavens and the earth…
so check this… before God created anything there was nothing outside of him…
This is why the bible never uses the word “create” for anything men do.... God is the ONLY creator… the only one EVER to create something out of literally NOTHING....
he is the only being that was not a creation....
This is why the bible never uses the word “create” for anything men do.... God is the ONLY creator… the only one EVER to create something out of literally NOTHING....
now notice… he’s such a “strong one” that he doesnt even need his hands…
Check this…
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.”
Genesis
And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so.
And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years,
And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.”
:
So our God the creator can create ANYTHING out of NOTHING by simply speaking a word....
We want God to create things in our lives… we want God to work in our lives… to do a work that will last.... think about the sun.. still burning because of the WORD that was spoken…
if you want something in your life to be created… something that will last… WE MUST GET A WORD FROM THE CREATOR!
All it takes is a word!!!
This is why it upsets God all throughout scripture whenever someone doubted his strength.... I am ELOHIM.... THE STRONG ONE… THE CREATOR...
The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.
“Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “There, in the tent,” he said. Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.
God said “ say what?”.... listen honey… created a baby inside of your womb is NOTHING FOR ME… I AM THE CREATOR… I with a word spoke the heaven and earth into existence from NOTHING…
Think of when Mary… wondered how in the world she could have a baby as a virgin....
For with God nothing will be impossible.”
WE SERVE THE “STRONG ONE” THE CREATOR… WE NEED TO LET HIM SPEAK A WORD INTO OUR LIVES… BRING SOME LIGHT TO THE DARKNESS...
brings me to next point...
Elohim…creator....also the RESTORER!!
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
FORMLESS…EMPTY…VOID.... TRANSLATED AS WASTE… UNINHABITABLE… UNNUSABLE....
So God… after creation of the earth noticed that it was uninhabiable… unnusable… waste… nothing was there . darkness and empty....
Some believe that this is when Satan was kicked out of heaven… God created the world.... kicked satan out..
think about what Satan does… takes the goodness of God’s creation and makes it a wasteland… using sin to bring darkness he attemps to make your life void and empty;....
God’s spirit was hovering… the strong one… the creator.. ready to restore!!
I love this about God’s character.... not only can he create something out of nothing but he can also take the mess that the devil has created and RESTORE it into something good. restore it intosomething great… the strong one.. the creator… our creator…
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
God said, God saw, God called, God seperated.... he is an active working God.. strong one is working in your life...
speak into your life
see into your life
call on your life
he is active in his people… strong one…
scripture that kept coming to my mind this afternoon....
David and his men reached Ziklag on the third day. Now the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and burned it, and had taken captive the women and everyone else in it, both young and old. They killed none of them, but carried them off as they went on their way. When David and his men reached Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep. David’s two wives had been captured—Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God. Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelek, “Bring me the ephod.” Abiathar brought it to him, and David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.”
and David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.” David and the six hundred men with him came to the Besor Valley, where some stayed behind. Two hundred of them were too exhausted to cross the valley, but David and the other four hundred continued the pursuit. They found an Egyptian in a field and brought him to David. They gave him water to drink and food to eat—part of a cake of pressed figs and two cakes of raisins. He ate and was revived, for he had not eaten any food or drunk any water for three days and three nights. David asked him, “Who do you belong to? Where do you come from?” He said, “I am an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me when I became ill three days ago. We raided the Negev of the Kerethites, some territory belonging to Judah and the Negev of Caleb. And we burned Ziklag.” David asked him, “Can you lead me down to this raiding party?” He answered, “Swear to me before God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master, and I will take you down to them.” He led David down, and there they were, scattered over the countryside, eating, drinking and reveling because of the great amount of plunder they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from Judah. David fought them from dusk until the evening of the next day, and none of them got away, except four hundred young men who rode off on camels and fled. David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken, including his two wives.
