v.36 “What do you want me to do for you?” cf. James & John’s request v.51 & Bartimaeus’ request.
Following Jesus for personal gain/glory vs. seeking mercy, deliverance & sight.
Jesus’ Cup & Baptism? cf. v. 32-34 … How out of place does James’ & John’s request seem in this context?
Cup & Baptism of His atoning death
Sacramental Image? This is a question for all of us too who share His Cup & Baptism!
Following Jesus means taking up our cross & following, not simply spiritual comfort or status.
Yet following Jesus brings true life, to us and to others.
vv.43-45 “first among you must be slave of all.”?
Just as Christ came to serve & save, that is the form of life we are given in Him.
Participants in Christ’s upside down kingdom!
Christ did not do what everyone wanted Him to, but He devoted His life to God’s will, to work for the benefit of others.

Isaiah 53:4–12 NRSV
Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the Lord shall prosper. Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Picture of Christ’s Cup & Baptism… enduring great suffering & shame, in faithfulness to God & for the sake of others.
Christ gave His life & sufferings as a “randsom for many”...

vv. 11-12 - Quoted by Satan to tempt Jesus...
Promises of ease & protection vs. promises of rejection & persecution. Ultimate fulfillment of blessings “in the world to come...”
We are in dangerous territory when we are chasing security, blessings, & glory rather than seeking God’s will… which is the fullness of life for ourselves and our world!

v.5 “Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed”
cf. James & John’s request. Self-promotion is antithetical to being this royal priesthood...
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version. (1989). (). Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.”
v.8 Christ, God’s Son, “learned obedience through what he suffered”
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version. (1989). (). Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.”
Both suffering & obedience are suspect in our culture.
Jesus was not suffering arbitrarily… embodying what it means to be God’s Son entailed suffering… love!
Jesus’ life, suffering death & resurrection are completely unique, yet He also shares it with us… Cup & Baptism.
Our lives as Christians are to be shaped by His life.
God’s will for us is to have Christ
Melchizedek? cf. 7:1
