Yehweh (I Am)

New Series

We are excited to begin our new series entitled “I am” tonight. For the next few weeks, we will be walking through the different names of our God and thereby the different characteristics of God.

My desire for each and every student is to understand that God desires to be your life source. He wants to be the safety net to catch you when you fall and he wants to be your () strong tower when you need refuge.

When I came to know Jesus when I was in high school, our church was not what it is today. Our youth group was smaller than most of your Family Groups. So when I came to know Jesus, I had a hunger and a thirst to know more about Him. Unfortunately, we didn’t really have anyone to do that in a way that I could grasp and understand.

Context

To understand the setting, we must first understand the context around the passage.

Moses used to be a Prince in Egypt even through he was an Israelite. He left after committing murder, so he was already on pretty bad terms with the Egyptians.

God speaks very directly to Moses to affirm his absolute power stating that Moses was on Holy Ground in verse 5.

Then come’s the command and then the Name of Study for tonight.

Verse 14 God answers Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”. A short, definite, unquestionable response.

God’s name, Jehovah, had been know for centuries ()

So understand that Moses could of very easily stated who sent him because he and the rest of the Israelites know God, because they are His Chosen People. But rather Moses was asking What does your name mean?

In which God responded with a name that is also know as the (Tetragrammaton), which is a fancy way to say “4 letters” in Hebrew.

YHWH is what “I AM WHO I AM” is translated from. This is where we get God’s name, Yehweh, which means I Am.

The Hebrew word “I AM”, translated Yehweh, also means to be or to become. Which speaks Jesus coming and becoming the Savior of the world. Jesus states these in John:

I AM… The bread of Life ()

I AM… The light of the world ()

I AM… the door of the sheep ()

I AM… the good shepherd ()

I AM… The resurrection and the life ()

I AM… the way, the truth, and the life ()

I AM… The true vine ()

God is stating in a matter of fact kind of way that, quite simply, He is. This passage speaks to the transcendent nature of our God that really exceeds our understanding because of his Divine nature.

God is, always has, and always will exist to be worshipped.

You are Moses in this situation. You are perfectly content at this moment in life just minding your own business.

Then you come face to face with reality of the existence of the Living God. Not only that, but you learn that you have a job and that job consists of a couple things.

But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. 15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, 17 and if children, also heirs —heirs of God and coheirs with Christ—seeing that we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
