Romans 7:24 ESV
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
Rom 7:24
Biblical Truth
Romans 7:24–25 ESV
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
Romans 8:1 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:1
We rejoice that positionally we are righteous in Christ before God. But, we struggle to practically live out the righteousness of God.
But, we struggle to practically live out the righteousness of God
How does the Spirit enable us to overcome the flesh and walk in the Spirit?
We have this bad habit of thinking that we can conquer or control and even kill the flesh. So we spend all our energy fighting ourselves and loosing.
It’s like a drug addict trying to recover while living with a drug addict. It’s only a matter of time until you will lose the fight because the partner isn’t strong enough to overcome your urges to use. You end up both falling. This is the fight we have with our flesh.
Romans 7:21–23 ESV
21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.
Rom 7:21
Only the Spirit of God has the power to destroy the works of the flesh in you.

6 Ways the Spirit kills the Flesh in You.

Romans 8:2–3 ESV
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
Romans 8:2 ESV
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:1 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Rom 8:2-

I. The Spirit sets you free from sin and Death.

Free to live in Christ
Free from your sinful flesh
Circumcision made without hands
Colossians 2:11 ESV
11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,
Romans 7:9 ESV
9 I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died.
Romans 6:11 ESV
11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Romans 7:11 ESV
11 For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.

If you are going to let the Spirit do His work in killing the flesh you have to give up control and get out of the way. (We call this yielding.)

Romans 8:4–5 ESV
4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
Romans

II. The Spirit renews your mind with the mind of Christ.

The Battle is always in the mind. Even though you have been set free from sin by the power of the Spirit, you determine the direction of your mind.

You must set your mind on heavenly things.

Romans 8:6–7 ESV
6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.
Colossians 3:1 ESV
1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
Colossians 3:1–2 ESV
1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

You must renew your mind through the Word

Roman
Romans 12:2 ESV
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

You must take control of your thoughts.

2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV
5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
1 Corinthians 10:5 ESV
5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

III. The Spirit indwells you.

Romans 8:9 ESV
9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
Rom

IV. The Spirit give life through righteousness.

Romans 8:10–11 ESV
10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Romans 8:10 ESV
10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

The Spirit is our security of life and righteousness.

We don’t have to earn that righteousness.

V. The Spirit has the power to kill the flesh.

Romans 8:12–13 ESV
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Romans 8:12 ESV
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.

VI. The Spirit adopts us into the family of God.

Romans 8:14 ESV
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
Rom
This is what is means to be born again. When you receive Jesus into your heart and mind you become a new creature. Full of life in the Spirit where there was only death before.
Romans 8:15 ESV
15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Rom 8:15-16
You now have a heavenly father that love and care for you in every way.
You will never be alone again.
You have all the power of God at your disposal and dwelling within you.
You are as special to God has his own Son.
You are royalty of God.
Romans 8:16–17 ESV
16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Rom
