The purpose of 1 Samuel was to tell of the transition from a theocratic nation, who the LORD rules through a judge, prophet and priest to a king, prophet and priest.
This is essential a very sad story because it was all about the rejection of king Saul and his family.
The rejection of Saul’s family
In verses 1 to 5, we tend to see only the friendship between Jonathan and David but this passage of Scripture is a lot more than that. The friendship between Jonathan and David.Led Jonathan to give up his rightful place as heir.Saul had 2 daughters and one son.And the wide-spread acceptance of David be the people and Saul’s servants.
The sufferings of the Anointed
is leading us into the 2 families.King Saul and King David.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ - Keep you Bibles open. You would want to refer to it.After David overcame the giant Goliath, king Saul asked him “Whose son are you?”He answered “I am the son of Jesse, the Bethlehemite.
The title for this evening sermon is the last verse of chapter 17.
KJV 1900And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite.
Beth-lehemite: Someone from Bethlehem, from the tribe of Judah.1 Samuel is given to introduce the transition of a theocratic nation ......where the LORD rules His people through a prophet, priest and judge to that of a king.Incidentally, the people in Samuel’s time forgotten that the LORD has in mind to give them a king. It was part of His plan for His people, and . The problem was not the request for a king.It was their reaction to their circumstances that revealed their lack of faith in the LORD who has promised them that he will protect and watch over themThe problem was their disobedience.by the time we come to chapter 18, we are seeing the beginning of the transition of kingship. From Saul to David. Both kingships were given by the LORD to His people. But one was the choice of man and the other the choice of the LORD.
SaulOur Scriptural text for this evening affirms what the LORD declared and did in chapters 16 and 17;the message from chapters 18 to ??? was to affirm to the reader that David was the LORD’s choice as King over the LORD’s people.David and his lineage was the anointed one; not Saul and his lineage. This troubled Saul greatly and he took it our on David.Saul plotted and acted out his plot to kill David.David was the LORD’s choice and the LORD gave David His Spirit, .
KJV 1900And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
King Saul saw what David could do when he defected Goliath and inspired the israelite army to over run the Philistines army.He like that as long as he and his family hold on to power. When it became obvious, both to the people and himself that David was more popular, jealousy set it.From that point on, he became more and more obsessed with killing David. He saw David as the threat and forgiven that it was the LORD who had already replaced him.
His struggle amnd enemies with with the LORD and he took it out on David.
there were xx times in chapter 18, where Saul tried to kill David - the list is for chapter 17 alone;ab
Beware: what and who are we really struggling against? You think its your boss, spouse, children, colleague, neighbour etc…do not be surprised that the real struggle is with your sinful self agianst the sovereign LORD.It is very strange that the LORD has enemies. Why?The LORD is;good, graciousmerciful, gentle, forgivingcompassionate etc.Yet people make Him their enemies - why?Is it not because he is;HolyJustPure andSovereign? Each and one of these attributes of the LORD will cause us to rebel and not obey Him.We want those attibutes of the LORD that pleases us.We despise those attributes that displeases us.How dare we treat the LORD this way.It was Taylor Hudson who wrote;“Christ is LORD of ALL or He is not LORD of all”.Our struggles in this life is with the LORD because He is sovereign. He LORD over all of our lives and when things does not come our way, what do we do?sulk?poutget angerbear a grudgemark the person who offended usrefuse to functionindulge in self pitycurse and swearthreaten to end our lives etcDo not be like king Sau - who forgot that it was the LORD who had replaced him as king.It was not David who wanted his throne.King David respected King Saul and refuses to take his life when he had the opportunity.
Let is also not lose sight of what David went through when he is the LORD anointed. How his enemy treated him.We can expect the same treatment.Even the LORD Jesus suffered the same treatment for being the LORD’S chosen one.
JonathanWhat about Jonathan? He was just as godly as David and that was why their souls were knitted together. Is that your relationship with your spouse, siblings, friends in church etc?
MichalWhat part did Michal, Saul’s daughter played in his narrative of Scripture?
The People - the IsraelitesAs a side note, Scripture tell us that David was popular with the people because he went in and out with them during his campaigns. The biblical model for leadership.
DavidWhere does all this small part of the story cumulate? Where and what was the focus of this story about David? The focus of is David and In the last verse of chapter 17, David announces that he was the son of Jesse. The statement and declaration on Scripture was more than for the benefit of Saul so that he could reward David for killing Goliath with wealth and his daughter. This mention of the lineage of David was to remind the read, who has the hindsight, of the messiah that will come and be the one true king of Israel - Jesus Christ.
What we see in chapter 18 is Saul and his children. He had 4 sons and 2 daughter. Both daugthers were mentioned here but his only son mentioned was Jonathan.
Jonathan was a godly man and that was why his soul was knitted with David, a man after the LORD’s heart. The applicatipn - true fellowship. One would would know that Jonathan may have already notice that the LORD has left Saul - his father. He may even know the pronouncement that the LORD has replace Saul with David.
