The Unified

NBA day Oct 16th
Lebron is at the Lakers now
Chasing titles
Jordan vs Lebron
Jordan stuck with his team, worked with his team and won with his team.
Jordan would beat Lebron 1on1 but more importantly Jordan played in unity with his team and that is why he has more title and is the GOAT
Jesus in this last part prays that we will play ball unified.
John 17:20-
John 17:20 NIV
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,
- Last week we saw Jesus pray for himself and for his 11 faithful disciples.
- Not He is praying for all believers.
- Who will believe the message of the disciples. About Jesus
- Jesus has entrusted the gospel to these 11 and after his resurrection will commission them to spread this message, that is the message that began with these 11 and spread to the world.
John 17:21 NIV
that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
John 17:2
- This message is how we all become one
- Jesus prays for our unity to be like that of the Father and the Son
- Then prays an invitation to us that we can be in holy unity with the trinity
- We are invited into relationship with the Holy triune God and his Holy Church
John 17:22 NIV
I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—
- What does this mean?
- Glory in being apart of the Holy Church of God?
- Glory in Unity experienced in with other believers?
- Glory in spreading the message?
- Probably all of these… in part but I believe it is talking about glory in manifestation.
- Jesus was the perfect manifestation of Gods name, character, atributes
- In short Jesus represented God perfectly
- In representing the heavenly father
- manifestation of Gods glory
- We have been invited into this as well
- To represent to Manifest
- That is the Glory that Jesus is speaking of, Glory in being made in his likeness, today here and now glory in acting like God.
John 17:23
John 17:23–24 NIV
I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
John 17:23 NIV
I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
- Complete unity is not just among believers it is believers in Jesus who is in unity with the Father.
- Not just that christians would be nice or think similarly
- But unified in Jesus and the Father.
- Any group of people can be unified around an idea, cause, goal or heck even just similar interest or hobby
- Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them with the same love for Jesus.
Being apart of the Body of Jesus means you receive the love of the Father for Jesus.
John 17:24 NIV
“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
John 17
Jesus desires us to know who he is not just in part but in whole as the glorified king the creator of the world.
Being a believer is not just about following a humble servant from 2000 years ago
Or a wise rabbi , clever teacher, radical prophet, political messiah
believing in Jesus and having relationship with him goes beyond that. We get to see him and know him in his glory as king
A clever
Do you see jesus, better yet worship Jesus in all his glory?
John 17:25–26 NIV
“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
John 17:25-
Jesus came for a mission and is still on mission.
He wants people to receive him and know the father.
Jesus wants Christians to be unified in:
1. Message
2. Heavenly Relationship
3. Love
4. Presence
5. Witnessing Glory
Purpose
He said it several times
So that they will know that you sent me.
Which means the desire behind that is that more people will be unified with the church, jesus and the father.
We are to be unified so that w
Christian unity is directly correlated to successful mission.
Which means disunity is detrimental to mission.
We are unified so that people will not just come to church and become members but that they will receive Jesus and know the love of the Father.
1 Peter 3:8 ESV
Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.
1 Peter
Philippians 2:2 ESV
complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
Ph
Philippians 2:1–8 ESV
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Philippians 2:1–5 ESV
So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
