Holy Spirit, then and now
Holy Spirit, then and now
What a journey we have been taking in studying the Holy Spirit. Hopefully by the scripture it has helped you get a better understanding of the Holy Spirit
The importance of studying the Spirit
The personality of the Spirit
The deity of the Spirit, the work of the Spirit
The promise and the baptism of the Spirit
The gift and the indwelling of the Spirit
The leading, the fruit and the gifts of the spirit
With the diversity of views we have seen that it does not need to be divisive. We have been encouraged to look at what the Word says and not come from what we feel, what we think.
One issue is many fail to distinguish between the work of the Spirit.
Work that was temporary, work that was specified for the early church
Work that is age-lasting, that is with us and will be until Christ calls His Spirit and the church home.
So tonight as I review what we have looked at over the last couple of months, I will also focus some on the temporary and age-lasting work of the Spirit.
I. Holy Spirit Then
I. Holy Spirit Then
The Spirit of prophesy that was promised, delivered; the work and the blessings to the early church.

Holy Spirit promised
Promised by God (Joe2:28-29)
Promised by John (Mk1:8)
Promised by Jesus Himself (Act1:4-5, 8)
Prophesy of promise fulfilled on Pentecost (Act2:1-22; Act2:32-33)

Holy Spirit promised
Promised by God (Joe2:28-29)
28 “It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. 29 “Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
Promised by God (Joe2:28-29)
Promised by God (Joe2:28-29)
Promised by John (Mk1:8)
Prophesy of promise fulfilled on Pentecost (Act2:1-22; Act2:32-33)
8 “I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Promised by Jesus Himself (Act1:4-5)
Jesus even spoke of the outpouring and empowering of the Spirit
Prophesy of promise fulfilled on Pentecost (Act2:1-22; Act2:32-33)
Holy Spirit promised
Promised by God (Joe2:28-29)
Promised by John (Mk1:8)
Promised by Jesus Himself (Act1:4-5, 8)
4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;
8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
But that is not all when it comes to the promise, we also have one more to go.
Holy Spirit promised
Promised by God (Joe2:28-29)
Promised by John (Mk1:8)
Promised by Jesus Himself (Act1:4-5)
Prophesy of promise fulfilled on Pentecost (Act2:1-22; Act2:32-33)
32 “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. 33 “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.

Holy Spirit Work
As shown, defined by John the Baptist (Mt3:11-12)
As defined by Jesus to the Apostles (Jn16:12-13; Jn14:26; Jn15:26-27)
All proven through the signs and wonders (Mk16:17-20; Heb2:3-4)
Add to that to convict the world of sin (Jn16:7-11)
All of this accomplished through the preaching (Act24:24-25)

Holy Spirit work in the early church
As shown, defined by John the Baptist (Mt3:11-12)
11 “As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 “His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Add to that to convict the world of sin (Jn16:7-11)
To serve as a winnowing fork
Separating the wheat from the chaff and gathering into the barn.
All of this accomplished through the preaching (Act24:24-25)
As shown, defined by John the Baptist (Mt3:11-12)
As defined by Jesus to the Apostles (Jn16:12-13; Jn14:26; Jn15:26-27)
To guide them into all truth, to teach them, remind them all things
All of this accomplished through the preaching (Act24:24-25)
To bear witness together with the Apostles
26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, 27 and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
As shown, defined by John the Baptist (Mt3:11-12)
As defined by Jesus to the Apostles (Jn16:12-13; Jn14:26; Jn15:26-27)
All proven through the signs and wonders (Mk16:17-20; Heb2:3-4)
Signs and wonders as noted in Mk16:17-20
All of this accomplished through the preaching (Act24:24-25)
17 “These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed. And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.
Let me give one more passage on this
3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, 4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.
This work, these wonders performed by those who saw, those who heard, by the gifts of the Holy Spirit to them to confirm what they said was true and was from God.
Now did I mention this is a very scripture rich message tonight? So many more to go, so let me press on.
7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;
All of this accomplished through the preaching (Act24:24-25)
11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
One more in this section then we will talk about blessings.
24 But some days later Felix arrived with Drusilla, his wife who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. 25 But as he was discussing righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix became frightened and said, “Go away for the present, and when I find time I will summon you.”
Preaching does not always convict does it? A person must have a willingness to hear, to listen. Felix was willing to listen but not willing to obey at this point; we may know people like that too. Let the Spirit do the work, don’t give up. We don’t add to the numbers daily, the Lord does!
In our next section, scripture rich, I will refer to many scriptures but only put in a few or we truly would be here all night.

Holy Spirit Blessings
Blessing is the gift of the Spirit Himself (Act2:38; Act5:32)
The Spirit with power given at laying on of Apostolic hands (ACt19:1-7; 2Tim1:6)
Spirit was for benefit of all, but not gifted to all. (1Cor14:6; 1Cor14:22)
Was temporary until that which is complete came (1Cor13:8-13)

Blessing is the gift of the Spirit Himself (Act2:38; Act5:32)
The Spirit with power given at laying on of Apostolic hands (ACt19:1-7; 2Tim1:6)
To the church at Ephesus that did not know know about the Spirit and Timothy who was imparted gifts at the laying on of Paul’s hands

Where tongues, prophesy and knowledge were good, they were going away when that which is complete comes
10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.
The bible, God’s full revelation given
Given to show faith, hope and love
13 But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Blessing: The anointing of the Spirit
Spoken by Paul (2Cor1:21)
Spoken by John (1Jn2:20, 27)
____________________________________________________
Blessing: The anointing of the Spirit
Spoken by Paul (2Cor1:21)
Spoken by John (1Jn2:20, 27)
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.
add to that
27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
and what Paul said
21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God,
All by the way phrased, way said, can be deducted that it was for certain people, certain time, people were the apostles who received the anointing and the time was their generation.
The promise, the work, the blessings of the Holy Spirit are amazing and were proved by the miraculous in the beginning. Some of this was temporal, for them then, some is age-lasting, that will continue until we hear the trump of the Lord sound!
II. Holy Spirit Now
II. Holy Spirit Now
While today we do not see the miraculous, the Spirit is still the same and has promises, work and blessings for the church today.

The Promise of the Spirit
Promised by Jesus (Jn7:37-39)
Promised by Peter (Act2:38-39; Act5:32)

The Promise of the Spirit
Promised by Jesus (Jn7:37-39)
37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
Promised by Peter (Act2:38-39; Act5:32)
39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Promised again to those who believe
Addressed to more than the apostles but to the crowd and it differs than what Jesus promised to the apostles which was a special dispensation of the Spirit.
The Promise of the Spirit
Promised by Jesus (Jn7:37-39)
Promised by Peter (Act2:38-39; Act5:32)
Promise for those who repent and believe and are baptized
Promise for those who obey
The promise of the Spirit comes with the indwelling of the Spirit that accompanies the blessings of the Spirit which we will cover shortly.

Work of the Spirit
To convict the world through the gospel (Jn16:7-11; Rom10:17; Heb4:12)
For it is God’s power to save (Rom1:16-17; 1Cor1:18)
To regenerate those who respond, obey (Tit3:4-6)
To sanctify the saved (Act20:32; 1The5:23)
_______________________________________________________
Work of the Spirit
To convict the world through the gospel (Jn16:7-11; Rom10:17; Heb4:12)
For we know that faith comes by hearing
To regenerate those who respond, obey (Tit3:4-6)
To sanctify the saved (Act20:32; 1The5:23)
Word convicts for it is sharper than two edge sword
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Work of the Spirit
To convict the world through the gospel (Jn16:7-11; Rom10:17; Heb4:12)
For it is God’s power to save (Rom1:16-17; 1Cor1:18)
The gospel is the power of God unto salvation, to the Jew then to the Greek
To regenerate those who respond, obey (Tit3:4-6)
The washing, the renewing, the regenerating to those who obey the gospel by the Holy Spirit.
Work of the Spirit
To convict the world through the gospel (Jn16:7-11; Rom10:17; Heb4:12)
For it is God’s power to save (Rom1:16-17; 1Cor1:18)
To regenerate those who respond, obey (Tit3:4-6)
To sanctify the saved (Act20:32; 1The5:23)
32 “And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
add to that one
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
And now we come to the blessings; I’mt going to give you the blessings in the scripture but I want you to enjoy the blessings so I’m not going to give the passages but encourage you to look them up, read them and enjoy them personally.
Blessings of the Spirit
Blessings of the Spirit
The gift of the Spirit Himself (Act2:38-39; Act5:32)
The indwelling of the Spirit (Rom8:9-13; Eph3:16; Php2:12-13; Php4:13)
The Spirit that dwells in you so that you can put to death the deeds of the flesh.
The Spirit that strengthens the inner man
Who helps you work out your salvation with fear and trembling
And can help you do all things through Christ Jesus.
The interceding of the Spirit (Rom8:26-27)
The Spirit that intercedes for us when we don’t know what to pray for
The sealing by the Spirit, confirmation of inheritance (Eph1:13-14)
The Spirit that seals us as God’s possession and confirms ownership and our inheritance
Now those are some pretty great blessings, blessings both internal (by indwelling) and external (through the Word). So as we finish out this series, I hope we have met the aim of this series to scriptually understand the Holy Spirit more.
