Where does God come to us if it is not in the drudgery of the everyday life.
Abram
Jacob
Moses - tending sheep - everyday life
Gideon - threshing wheat - everyday life that was oppressed
Peter - at work fishing - every day life
Not in the fire or the wind or the earthquake but in the whisper!
The Psalms - Alistair Begg says the psalms connect us with those who are currently in heaven worshipping. And that Jesus is actually leading that according to .
4 My soul is in the midst of lions; I lie down amid fiery beasts— the children of man, whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!
6 They set a net for my steps; my soul was bowed down. They dug a pit in my way, but they have fallen into it themselves. Selah
7 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast! I will sing and make melody!
8 Awake, my glory! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn!
9 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10 For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.
11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!
46 The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation—
Scripture
49 For this I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations, and sing to your name.
7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Still our hearts so we hear your whisper.
Three qualities that made up the man after God’s own heart
Faithful
about hiding from Saul in a cave
tells the story. Saul went into the cave to do some ‘light reading’. David and his men were in the back of the cave, unknown to Saul. David sneaks up and cuts off the corner of Saul’s robe, but convinces his men not to kill Saul. “How can I lift my hand against the Lord’s anointed?”
He was faithful to tend his father’s sheep. He was faithful to be a soldier in Saul’s army.
David was faithful to stay on God’s timeline. He was faithful to be who God expected him to be in that moment. BTW, he was shepherd, soldier and fugitive all after being anointed as king of Israel.
How do we develop this quality in the church? In this church family?
Men, how have you remained faithful to your wife? Because you love her! And you CHOSE to do that! Is that any different from how a spirit of faithfulness grows in a church?
Practice. David practiced being faithful (to God) by being faithful (to his father). We practice being faithful by being faithful. You may think that’s an over-simplification.
Thankful
after God delivered from his enemies
When he brought the ark back to Jerusalem, he danced as thankful worship welled up in his heart!
How do we develop this quality in the church? In this church family?
When dissatisfied, we talk less(about being dissatisfied) and do more(to correct issues).
We guard the fact there is an object of our thankfulness. That object is God.
We admit is true. Every good and perfect gift...
Repentant - we dont repent because we are worthy of forgiveness, but because He is merciful!
after being confronted with Bathsheba events
When David was incited to take a census (), once he realized the error of his actions, repentance was the first thing from him.
How do we develop this quality in the church? In this church family?
Know and live by the standard. We live in a culture ignorant of the standard thus ignorant of the need for repentance.
When wires get crossed, stay in community together. Dont bail.
There are enough good reasons to leave a church without choosing a poor reason to leave a church. Death/you win. Job change/God gave you a new platform. Move to be closer to kids/family. Ichabod.
Repentance requires conversations. Prodigal son.
Grace changes everything! God to David. Joseph to brothers. Father to prodigal son. Jesus to Peter.
There is a “pop-up” synagogue in New York. Not sure what qualifies it to be called that. But there is it. In an effort to be inclusive and relevant and non-offensive they have developed a system that is summed up by their tag-line: everybody friendly, artist-driven, God-optional, experimental community
Want to put an easy to remember tag on why David was a man after God’s own heart? God wasnt optional!
Do we sometimes treat God as though He is optional? Like an accessory we choose, or choose not, to wear? Like going to church or not going to church?
Dare: Worship. Love. Serve.
He was chosen before the foundation of the world
We were chosen before the foundation of the world
