OF ALL THE PSALMS, I BLEIEVE IS ONE OF THE MOST HEART WRENCHING PSALMS.
IT IS A HEART FILLED AND GENUINE ACCOUNT OF DAVIDS GUILTY HEART. THERE IS NO REAL NEED TO ENLARGE THE CIRCUMSTANCES, THE HEADING TELLS THE TRAGIC STORY.
SLIDE HEADING OF

TO THE CHOIRMASTER. A PSALM OF DAVID, WHEN NATHAN THE PROPHET WENT TO HIM, AFTER HE HAD GONE IN TO BATHSHEBA.

ABUSE OF HIS KINGLY POWER
PASSIONS GIVEN INTO
DARKER GUILT CAN SCARCELY BE FOUND IN SCRIPTURE
THIS SORROWFUL PSALM IS A MIRROR OF OUR OWN HEART, FOR IT REVEALS THAT IN EACH OF US, THERE IS SOMETHING NEAR HELL AND SOMETHING NEAR HEAVEN. SOMETHING DIABOLICAL AND SOMETHING DIVINE - HERBERT LOCKYEAR
WRITTEN WELL OVER THREE THOUSAND YEARS AGO, IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN WRITTEN YESTERDAY, FOR ITS TITLE PROVES THAT IT IS TIMELESS.
THE PSALM CAN BE BROKEN UP INTO THREE DISTINCT SECTIONS
THE CONFESSION OF GUILT - V1-6
THE PRAYER FOR DIVINE RENEWAL - V7-12
THE REWARD OF RESTORED FELLOWSHIP - V13-19
TODAY WE LOOK AT ONE LONE VERSE:
Psalm 51:10 ESV
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
SLIDE A CLEAN HEART

A CLEAN HEART

THE TWO REQUESTS FOUND IN THIS VERSE COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER - A CLEAN HEART AND A RIGHT SPIRIT. IF YOU HAVE A CLEAN HEART YOU WILL MANIFEST A RIGHT SPIRIT.
YOU CANNOT HAVE A RIGHT SPIRIT TOWARD GOD AND OTHERS UNTIL YOU HAVE A CLEAN HEART.
THE CLEAN HEART WE TALK ABOUT IS THE INWARD WORK OF GRACE AND IT IS WHAT GOD DOES IN US. IT REPRESENTS THE ROOT OF HOLINESS
THE RIGHT SPIRIT IS THE OUTWARD WORK OF GOD AND IS WHAT HE DOES THROUGH US AND SUGGESTS THE FRUIT OF HOLINESS.

SANCTIFICATION—involves more than a mere moral reformation of character, brought about by the power of the truth: it is the work of the Holy Spirit bringing the whole nature more and more under the influences of the new gracious principles implanted in the soul in regeneration. In other words, sanctification is the carrying on to perfection the work begun in regeneration, and it extends to the whole man (Rom. 6:13; 2 Cor. 4:6; Col. 3:10; 1 John 4:7; 1 Cor. 6:19). It is the special office of the Holy Spirit in the plan of redemption to carry on this work (1 Cor. 6:11; 2 Thess. 2:13). Faith is instrumental in securing sanctification, inasmuch as it (1) secures union to Christ (Gal. 2:20), and (2) brings the believer into living contact with the truth, whereby he is led to yield obedience “to the commands, trembling at the threatenings, and embracing the promises of God for this life and that which is to come.”

Perfect sanctification is not attainable in this life (1 Kings 8:46; Prov. 20:9; Eccl. 7:20; James 3:2; 1 John 1:8). See Paul’s account of himself in Rom. 7:14–25; Phil. 3:12–14; and 1 Tim. 1:15; also the confessions of David (Ps. 19:12, 13; 51), of Moses (90:8), of Job (42:5, 6), and of Daniel (9:3–20). “The more holy a man is, the more humble, self-renouncing, self-abhorring, and the more sensitive to every sin he becomes, and the more closely he clings to Christ. The moral imperfections which cling to him he feels to be sins, which he laments and strives to overcome. Believers find that their life is a constant warfare, and they need to take the kingdom of heaven by storm, and watch while they pray. They are always subject to the constant chastisement of their Father’s loving hand, which can only be designed to correct their imperfections and to confirm their graces. And it has been notoriously the fact that the best Christians have been those who have been the least prone to claim the attainment of perfection for themselves.”, Hodge’s Outlines.

Acts 13:22 ESV
And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’
THIS IS TO US A VERY CONFUSING PRAYER BECAUSE WHEN WE LOOK AT DAVID - DO WE NOT SEE THAT HE HAD RECEIVED THIS DIVINE ANOINTING FROM GOD?
WHEN WE LOOK AT DAVID - DO WE NOT SEE THAT HE HAD RECEIVED THIS DIVINE ANOINTING FROM GOD
WE READ IN
1 Samuel 13:14 ESV
But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
Acts 13:22 ESV
And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’
THAT DAVID WAS A MAN AFTER GODS OWN HEART.
YET HERE HE IS CRYING OUT FOR A CLEAN HEART - DID HE NOT ALREADY HAVE THE HEART OF GOD?
A REGENERATED HEART OS THE POSSESSION OF ALL BELIEVERS, IT IMPLIES THE REMOVAL OF ALL PAST PENALTY AND GUILT OF SIN.
A CLEAN HEART IS ONE WE ALL NEED TO PRAY FOR, AS PAUL DESCRIBES IN
1 Thessalonians 5:23 ESV
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

A CLEAN HEART IS A NECESSARY CREATION

1 THESSALONIANS 5:23
THE PSALM REVEALS THE REGRET OF THE SINNER , THE PROGRESS FROM OUTWARD SIN TO INWARD SIN. DAVID CAME TO DISCOVER HIDDEN SPRINGS WITHIN HIS BEING.
DAVID CAME TO DISCOVER HIDDEN SPRINGS WITHIN HIS BEING
LOOKING AT THIS SITUATION WE ARE SADDENED - DAVID HAD BEEN A CHILD OF GOD FOR 50 YEARS, IS IT NOT TRAGIC THAT HIS LIFE AND ROYALTY WERE MARRED BY ONE SIN?
OUR PRAYER NEEDS TO BE:
MAY GOD DELIVER US FROM THE PERIL OF INDULGENCE IN THE SIN THAT SO EASILY TROUBLES US. MANY OUTSTANDING BIBLE SAINTS STAINED THEIR CHARACTER BY A PARTICULAR SIN.
NOAH SELF INDULGED - GOT DRUNK
ABRAHAM - DECEIVED ABIMELECH
MOSES LOST HIS TEMPER
ACHAN DIED FOR HIS GREED AND COVETING OF POSSESIONS
THE CHILDREN OF ISREAL KEPT FROM THE PROMISE LAND BECAUSE OF UNBELIEF
DAVID - GAVE INTO LUST
CLEAN HANDS ARE THE RESULT OF A CLEAN HEART

THE CLEAN HEART IS A HOLY CREATION

BECAUSE THE ISSUES OF LIFE SPRING FROM THE HEART, IT IS ESSENTIAL FOR OUR HERTS TO BE PURIFIED AND THEN KEPT PURE.
UNLESS THE FOUNTAIN IS CLEAN, THE WATER WILL NOT BE WHOLESOME.
WHAT EXACTLY DO WE MEAN BY A PURE HEART? IT IS NOT THAT WE ARE ABSOLUTELY PERFECT BUT THE LIABILITY TO SIN IS ALWAYS PRESENT EVEN IN THE BEST OF US.
HOWEVER THAT TENDENCY TO SIN CAN BE COUNTERACTED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, WHOS MISSION IS TO PRODUCE DIVINE HOLINESS IN OUR LIVES.
THERE IS A DISTINCTION BETWEEN BLAMELESS AND FAULTLESS. OFTEN WE ARE BLAMELESS BUT NEVER ARE WE FAULTLESS.
BLAMELESS AND FAULTLESS
SLIDE BLAMELESS
WE MAKE MANY MISTAKES, BUT ARE BLAMELESS IN THEM BECAUSE OF PARTIAL LIGHT - WE DID NOT KNOW THEM TO BE MISTAKES BUT ARE BLAMELESS IN THEM.
FAULTLESS WOULD MEAN WE ARE INCAPABLE OF MAKING MISTAKES
IN THE OLD TESTAMENT THERE WAS A SACRIFICE FOR THE SINS OF IGNORANCE.
OUR OLD NATURE IS THE SEAT OF SIN AND SUBJECT TO THE ATTRACTIONS OF THE FLESH.
ONLY OUR LORD JESUS LIVED ON EARTH AND WAS FAULTLESS OR SINLESS
OUR OBLIGATION IS TO LIVE IN HARMONY WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT WHO IS ABLE TO MAKE US SENSITIVE TO WHAT IS ALIEN .
Leviticus 10:1–3 ESV
Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which he had not commanded them. And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’ ” And Aaron held his peace.
LET US LOOK AT WHAT DAVID PRAYED FOR - A CLEAN HEART - GOD WANTS US TO EXPERIENCE A CLEAN HEART.
SLIDE CLEAN HEART DEFINE
BY A CLEAN HEART, WE UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS NO KNOWN, CONSCIOUS, UNJUDGED OR UNFORGIVEN SIN.
Acts 24:16 ESV
So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.
Psalm 19:12 ESV
Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
DAVID WAS NOT REFERRING TO THOSE THINGS HE KNEW TO BE WRONG AND WHICH HE HID FROM OTHERS, BUT TO DEPTHS OF CORRUPTION WITHIN HIS BEING HE DID NOT KNOW EXISTED.THEY WERE NOT KNOWN TO HIM BUT TO GOD AND HE SOUGHT TO WALK IN THE LIGHT, THE UNKNOWN BECAME KNOWN AND THE SECRET FAULTS WERE REVEALED.
1 Corinthians 4:4 ESV
For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me.
WHEN WE HAVE A CLEAN HEART THEN WE ARE CONSCIOUS THERE IS NOTHING BETWEEN THE LORD AND OURSELVES TO HINDER COMMUNION. THIS INNER CONDITION IS MAINTAINED AS THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS TO MIND THE HIDDEN AND WE CONFESS AND REPENT OF OUR SINS.
SHARE????
SUCH A CLEANSING REQUIRES FAITH ON OUR PART
Acts 15:9 ESV
and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith.
ACTS
1 John 1:7 ESV
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
THE WORD CLEANSE AND PURIFY USED IN THIS SCRIPTURE IMPLIES PRESENT AND PROGRESSIVE - IN OTHER WORDS IF WE KEEP CONFESSING THE UNCLEANNESS THE SPIRIT REVEALS THE BLOOD OF JESUS KEEPS ON CLEANSING US FROM IT.

RENEW A RIGHT SPIRIT WITHIN ME

A CLEAN HEART AND A RIGHT SPIRIT ARE TWIM NECESSITIES.
IT IS POSSIBLE TO SEEK A CLEAN HEART AND MAINTAIN A WRONG SPIRIT IN LIFE
DAVIDS HEART WAS CREATED BY GOD, BUT HE HAD TO CULTIVATE IT BY KEEPING IT HOLY BEFORE GOD, IN REVERENCE FOR GOD.
GOD GIVES THE SEED BUT THE GARDNER CULTIVATES IT
BEING RIGHT WITH GOD MEANS BEING RIGHT WITH THOSE AROUND US. THE RIGHT SPIRIT ADJUSTED DAVIDS RELATIONSHIP WITH BATHSHEBA AND THE OTHERS HE HAD WRONGED.
SLIDE CLEAN HEART
THE CLEAN HEART IS THE ROOT, PRINCIPLE, FOUNTAIN, OF OUR LIFE GODWARD.
SLIDE RIGHT SPIRIT
THE RIGHT SPIRIT IS THE FRUIT, THE SPRING, THE PRACTICE OF HOLINESS MANWARD
CREATE AND RENEW OFFER A STUDY OF CONTRAST
GOD CREATES SOMETHING FROM WHAT IS NOT THERE, HE BRINGS ALL THAT IS NECESSARY INTO THE HEART THAT REQUIRES HIS ATTENTION.
GRACE FEEDS NOT ON WHAT IT FINDS BUT WHAT IT PROVIDES
RENEW IMPLIES A TOTALLY DIFFERENT ASPECT OF DIVINE ACTION.
YOU CANT RENEW WHAT DOES NOT EXIST
DAVID PRAYED FOR RENEWAL BECAUSE HE ONCE HAD A RIGHT SPIRIT AND LOST IT .
SPEAKS OF HE RESTORES MY SOUL.
IT IS BEING BROUGHT BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL STATE
Psalm 51:12 ESV
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
PSALM 51:
SIN HAD ROBBED DAVID OF THIS JOY
THE PROPHET EZEKIEL ALSO REMINDS US OF GODS WILLINGNESS TO GIVE US THIS DOUBLE BLESSING DAVID IS ASKING FOR
Ezekiel 36:26 ESV
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
EZEKIEL 36:
A CLEAN HEART IS POWERLESS IF IT LACKS THE RIGHT SPIRIT
WE HAVE A WRONG SPIRIT TOWARD GOD AND HOW HE PROVIDES
WE ARE ALSO GUILTY OF A JEALOUS, UNFORGIVING, CRITICAL, THOUGHTLESS , HARD SPIRIT TOWARD THOSE AROUND US.
LET ME JUST CLARIFY THIS WORD RIGHT IS NOT IN CONTRACT TO THE WORD WRONG IT IMPLIES
UPRIGHT, HONEST AND TRANSPARENT IN EVERY DETAIL OF OUR CHRISTIAN LIVES
DAVID IN COMITTING ADULTERY WITH BATHSHEBA HAD BEEN GUILTY OF DECEPTION
AS SOLDIERS OF CHRIST THERE ARE NO EASY PARADE DAYS FOR US - WE NEED TO BE ON THE READY, FIRM UPRIGHT AND READY ALERT WAITING FOR THE NEXT COMMAND OF OBEDIENCE.
SLIDE 51:12
Psalm 51:12 ESV
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
A FREE SPIRIT / WILLING SPIRIT - A RENEWED PIRIT IS WILLING, NOBLE AND PRINCELY.
PSALM 51:12
WHEN CHRISTIANS HAVE TO BE BEGGED TO SERVE GOD OR GIVE OF THEIR SUBSTANCE, THERE IS A WRONG SPIRIT, IT LACKS THE LIBERTY OF THE CHILDREN OF GOD.
SLIDE CORINTHIANS
1 Corinthians 3:17 ESV
If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
2 Corinthians 3:17 ESV
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
1 CORINTHIANS
2 CORINTHIN
SLIDE 51:17
Psalm 51:17 ESV
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
DAVIDS SPIRIT HAD TO BE BROKEN BEFORE GOD COULD RENEW IT. HIS TREATMENT OF URIAH AND HIS FAMILY WAS EVIL - HIS SPIRIT HAD TO BE BROKEN BEFORE IT COULD BE RENEWED
HAVE WE HUMBLED OURSELVES BEFORE GOD TO SEEK OUT THOSE HIDDEN AREAS THAT NEED SOME LIGHT SHED ON THEM
PSALM 51:
Psalm 51:11 ESV
Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN RENEW A RIGHT SPIRIT WITHIN US.
THE HUMAN SPIRIT CAN ONLY BE SANCTIFIED, HALLOWED BY THE DIVINE SPIRIT
AS WE YEILD TO HIS CONTROL, HE KEEPS OUR SPIRITS RIGHT, STEADFAST AND PURE READY TO SERVE WHEREVER HE APPOINTS.
NOTICE HOW DAVID CHANGES
Psalm 51:13 ESV
Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.
PSALM 51:
YOU SEE, UNTIL THERE IS A CLEANSING AND A RENEWAL THERE CANNOT BE A REVIVAL. WITHOUT SPIRITUAL RENEWAL REVIVAL IS NOT POSSIBLE.
PRAY
REVIVE OUR SPIRITS
