Where’s your heart at?
Where’s your heart at?
1 How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty!
2 My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
3 Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young— a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.
5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
6 As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools.
7 They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.
8 Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty; listen to me, God of Jacob.
9 Look on our shield, O God; look with favor on your anointed one.
Psalm 84:1

Vs 5-7 (MSG): And how blessed all those in whom you live, whose lives become roads you travel.
Vs 10 (MSG): One day spent in your house, this beautiful place of worship, beats thousands spent on Greek island beaches.
I’d rather scrub floors in the house of my God than be honoured as a guest in the palace of sin.
God-traveled, these roads curve up the mountain, and at the last turn—Zion! God in full view!

Collins Dictionary
“Your heart is the organ in your chest that pumps the blood around your body.” - (Collins Dictionary)
“It is used to refer to a person's character, or the place within a person where feelings or emotions are considered to come from” - (Cambridge Dictionary)
1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”
5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”
9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.”
10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.”
11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
Why was Eliab rejected?
,
Do you know Samuel anointed Saul to be king, with similar looks as Eliab? Surely, Samuel knew how a king should look like.
2 Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else.
1Sam
15 Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel:
16 “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him ruler over my people Israel; he will deliver them from the hand of the Philistines. I have looked on my people, for their cry has reached me.”
17 When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord said to him, “This is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people.”
1 Samuel 9: 15-17
The name Eliab means, “My God is Father”
The fact that God rejected Eliab meant Eliab was weighed, considered, scrutinised by God if he was fit to be a king. He failed God’s test.
Facts about Eliab:
- Eliab enlists to be soldier in king Saul’s army.
- When Goliath defied the army of God that was led by king Saul, Eliab and his other two brothers (Abinadab and Shammah) did not answer the call to restore the peace of Israel, because they were afraid, like the rest of Israel to face Goliath
(, )
- When David comes to the army camp and questions the audacity of the giant Goliath to defy God’s army and asks about the reward that would be given to the one who would take away the reproach of Israel, Eliab gets angry.
Eliab in his anger also accuses David of having a naughty heart alleging that David came to be a spectator of the war.
What Eliab was:
Tall, dark and handsome (He was the manly man - Physical traits)
Does not take initiative, rather responds out of fear and becomes a spectator, instead of faith in God
Quick to take offence when he feels challenged, he becomes cranky and accusatory
Tried to bully David and belittle him
- Quick to take offence (rebukes David)
Tried to bully David and belittle him
20 Early in the morning David left the flock in the care of a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry.
21 Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other.
22 David left his things with the keeper of supplies, ran to the battle lines and asked his brothers how they were.
23 As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it.
24 Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear.
25 Now the Israelites had been saying, “Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes in Israel.”
26 David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
27 They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, “This is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
28 When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”
1 Samuel 17
Remember, it was on matters of the heart that Eliab was rejected and we see Eliab questioning the character (heart) of David; the heart that God himself said was after his very own
22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’
).
Eliab’s insolent pride, which disqualified him from being king and was revealed through accusing David of what he himself was guilty, was in stark contrast to David’s eyes of faith.
Eliab made a point of publicly declaring his superiority by belittling David when he asked “And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness?”. Eliab was saying to David, “you’re a nobody, spending your time in the middle of nowhere, only taking care of a pitiful handful of sheep” – compared to me “the warrior””.
20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Functions of the Biological Human Heart
The human heart is an organ that
Pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system
When it is pumping blood, it beats, the heartbeat indicates the health of your heart.
How healthy is your heart, does it still feels pumped, excited when you hear about the things of God? Does it respond to God’s word?
Supplying oxygen and nutrients to the tissues
Is your heart feeding the body? Through giving, fellowship, being part of the body?
Removing carbon dioxide and other wastes.
Does your heart intentionally get rid of the poisonous substances that could be harmful to the body you belong to? When you hear words that does not support the gospel, do you takes sides with it, or are afraid to confront it like Eliab, or do you stand against it like David?
He was not a shepherd (did not know what care is in leadership)
God look at the state of your heart through your Spirit
27 The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one’s inmost being.
Ways to Improve your heart’s health
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.

Matthew 6:22
7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people,
22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,

See things from his perspective. Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life—even though invisible to spectators—is with Christ in God. He is your life. When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you’ll show up, too—the real you, the glorious you.
Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ. And that means killing off everything connected with that way of death: sexual promiscuity, impurity, lust, doing whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it, and grabbing whatever attracts your fancy. That’s a life shaped by things and feelings instead of by God. It’s because of this kind of thing that God is about to explode in anger.
It wasn’t long ago that you were doing all that stuff and not knowing any better. But you know better now, so make sure it’s all gone for good: bad temper, irritability, meanness, profanity, dirty talk. It’s like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you’ve stripped off and put in the fire. Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete. Words like Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and irreligious, insider and outsider, uncivilized and uncouth, slave and free, mean nothing. From now on everyone is defined by Christ, everyone is included in Christ. Don’t lie to one another. You’re done with that old life. Eat at least 5 servings of vegetables and 4 servings of fruits daily
Eat at least 5 servings of vegetables and 4 servings of fruits daily
A vegetable- and fruit-rich eating plan helps ensure that you’re eating plenty of foods full of stomach-filling volume, yet low in calories, enhancing your weight-loss efforts. Losing excess weight is one of the most effective ways to lower blood pressure. Eating a lot of fruits and vegetables also means you’re eating rich sources of potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Many studies have found that foods abundant in these minerals help blunt some of the toxic effects of sodium.
Cut back on calorie-dense foods loaded with fat, sugar, and/or refined grains
Cut back on calorie-dense foods loaded with fat, sugar, and/or refined grains
Doing so will also enhance your weight-loss efforts. What does Calorie represent? It may be yummy, but too much is not good for your health.
The physicians and other faculty at Pritikin agree with sodium guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and American Heart Association.5 Both recommend an ideal limit of no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day for most adults.
Limiting salt intake really works, especially for those most in need. Many studies have shown that the higher blood pressure is and the more salt is restricted, the greater the fall in blood pressure.
Limit alcohol drinking
Limit alcohol drinking
Excess alcohol drinking (more than 3 drinks daily) has been shown to increase the risk of hypertension.
Exercise daily
Exercise daily
Daily physical activity promotes loss of excess weight, vital for controlling blood pressure. It also stimulates the body’s production of beneficial chemicals like nitric oxide that expand blood vessels and increase blood flow.
Spiritual exercise includes praying, studying God’s word, quiet time.
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
Philippians
2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
