Scribes: They were the authorities. They were the experts in the law. They quibbled about minor matters. (washing of hands) will see that in
a. One problem with them was legalism. That can be a problem. You have to dress the right way. Or the service has to be done a certain way. That can hinder a service.
b. With the scribes there was no power in their teaching. It was more about them then is was the teaching of God’s word. It was the same old thing and there was no change.

2 Timothy 4:2–4 KJV 1900
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
II Timothy 4:2-
The devil is ok with the fables, stories and ear tickling preaching. But when the Word of God is preached, it bring conviction, and conviction leads to salvation to the lost, and restored joy to the believer that has strayed.
