Two Visions for the Church

Christ’s Church vs The “Me” church

Dynamics of a Healthy Church

DYNAMIC #1: Discipline

God disciplines those he loves (his children). Those God does not disciple are not his children.

Formative vs Corrective - Means of Grace to be conformed

Those God does not disciple are not his children.
Formative Discipline
ie - preventive medicine. Good hygiene, exercise, good habits, vitamins
Christ is to be formed in the believer.
Romans 8:29 NASB95
For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;
Learning from the Grace of God
Titus 2:11–12 NASB95
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,
Church attendance (fellowship):
Acts 2:42 NASB95
They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Hebrews 10:24–25 NASB95
and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
Romans 1:12 NASB95
that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine.
Ministry service
Ephesians 4:12 NASB95
for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
This comes with a cost!
Cheerful Giving
Corrective Discipline
ie corrective medicine - surgery, medicine
Deals with sin in the life of the believer, aspects that might prohibit the person from growing in their faith.
Something chronic? Something unfixed.
Sin that traps us and takes our eyes off of Christ. takes us away from God’s Word. You need a doctor!
Not all sins are equal in consequence.
Sins we are struggling with but can’t seem to break. Risk in the life of the believer.
Are you using your ministry in the church to cover your faults?
Risk in the life of the believer.
Are you covering up with your ministry? You should first leave your ministry, deal with the issue, then come back when you are restored.
Confessing sins one to another?
Receive admonition of every person. Do you have someone to admonish you?
Spiritual Intermediary
Galatians 6:1 NASB95
Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
Follow-up Steps
Go alone
Go with witness
Go to the church
Separate
1 Corinthians 5:11 NASB95
But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a one.
Titus 3:10 NASB95
Reject a factious man after a first and second warning,
Why Discipline?
It works
2 Corinthians 2:6 NASB95
Sufficient for such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority,
2 Corinthians 2:5–9 NASB95
But if any has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow not to me, but in some degree—in order not to say too much—to all of you. Sufficient for such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority, so that on the contrary you should rather forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a one might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. Wherefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him. For to this end also I wrote, so that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things.
2 Cor 2:6-
It’s God’s Will
1 Corinthians 11:32 NASB95
But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.
Hebrews 12:7 NASB95
It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
It is for your Growth
Hebrews 12:10 NASB95
For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.
QUESTIONS:
Is God’s Word actively forming you to the image of Christ?
Are you dealing with sin in your life?
Are you open to receive admonishment?
Are you helping another deal with their sin?
