They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
The man who had been blind was taken to the Pharisees. In the context of the story, THEY refers to his neighbors and those who formerly had seen him blind.
John 9:14
Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.
We learn for the first time in this story that this was on the Sabbath.
Why is John pointing this out?
Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
The man was asked again to tell of how he could see. The story does not change: “He put mud on my eyes, I washed, and now I see.”
“He” refers to Jesus but Jesus is not named in his account.
Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”
But others asked, “How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?” So they were divided.
The Pharisees began a theological debate about Jesus.
God does not act in man’s perimeter.
Finally they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied, “He is a prophet.”
John 9:
The man was asked, “What do you say about Him?”
What do you say about Jesus?
Was/Is He just a prophet? Remember the woman at the well? He was prophet to her before she knew Him as Messiah.
This is said boldly and at great personal risk, saying it to the faces of the complaining Pharisees.
Is He your Healer of blindness?
What is Jesus to you?
The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents.
They asked the pertinent questions, hoping to find disproof.
“We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind.
Validation occurs. They parents acknowledged him as their son who was born blind.
But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.”
They cautiously decline giving any information about his cure.
Why do you think this is the case?
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.
They were afraid. They did not have the courage to stand for Christ.
“He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters.
Luke 11:
If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
He is of age. The parents were saving themselves from trouble. There is a saying that goes something like this: “Near is my friend, near is my child, and perhaps near is my religion- but nearer myself.”
Latin phrase proximus ego mihi.
Christianity teaches another lesson:
Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.
1 Corinthians 10:24
For how can I bear to see disaster fall on my people? How can I bear to see the destruction of my family?”
Esther 8
What made them afraid?
They were fearful they would be kicked out of the synagogue.
What does the Bible say about the fear of man?
Fear of man will prove to be a snare,
but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.
A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God,” they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”
The phrase “give glory to God” is the Pharisees practicing .
Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, and give him the praise. Tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
Joshua 7:19
This is an oath to tell the truth.
He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
John 9
Sometimes we cannot explain the Grace of God. Sometimes all we can say is I can;t explain it but it is true.
Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
This is an attempt to get a different story.
.
He answered, “I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?”
The cured blind man doesn’t gratify them with telling the story again.
Jesus spoke about this attitude:
If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.
Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”
John 9:
If you study the scriptures, you will notice that there was perfect harmony between Moses and Jesus.
Moses prepared for Jesus. An example is that of the preparing the passover lamb.
“It must be eaten inside one house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones.
Exodus 12:46
If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.
(refers to )
Christ perfected Moses
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Joh
Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.
Christ spoke honorably of Moses
“Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
The Pharisees tried to make them opposites but in reality they should be seen as working together for the Glory of God.
We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”
“We know God spoke to Moses, but to this guy?”
They stated that they did not even know where he came from. Whose fault was that? They should have seen clearly from scripture that the Messiah was to appear at this time.
They did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord,
who brought us up out of Egypt
and led us through the barren wilderness,
through a land of deserts and rifts,
a land of drought and darkness,
a land where no one travels and no one lives?’
Jeremiah 2
Mankind will not no Jesus if they are resolved not to believe it.
The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.
Notice the courage of the cured blind man, born blind but now can see! “You don’t know Him but He has made me see!”
We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
Therefore once more I will astound these people
with wonder upon wonder;
the wisdom of the wise will perish,
the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.”
Isaiah 2
The man shows that Jesus was not a sinner, but of God. A blind man, unlearned, yet judging more rightly than educated Pharisees.
If I had cherished sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened;
but God has surely listened
and heard my voice in prayer.
Praise be to God,
who has not rejected my prayer
or withheld his love from me!
Psalm 6
