THEME VERSE
John 8:12 NIV
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
THEME OF DARKNESS AND LIGHT
Physically , light and darkness exist in opposition. Light is an energy source that provides illumination; darkness is absence of light. Results in disorientation, distortion, and confusion
Throughout the New Testament, the physical sense of light and darkness is used often to make spiritual comparisons.
Light - people or things are righteous, pure, godly, or good. Associated with life
Darkness - Wickedness, impurity, immorality, and evil. Associated with suffering, death, and decay.
1 John 1:5–7 NIV
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Darkness

Order
God’s first creative act is to produce light and separate it from darkness.
Genesis 1:4–5 NIV
God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
Genesis 1:3–5 NIV
And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
Matthew 6:22–23 NIV
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
Luke 11:34–36 NIV
Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
What does it mean to walk in darkness? What is darkness?
The Challenge

The darkness of eternal punishment

1 John 1:5–7 NIV
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
NIVBut the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
To remove our darkness, we need to let God in. When we do that, when we walk in the light, we have fellowship with one another and we have Jesus who purifies us from all sin! That’s amazing!

Darkness

- Living a lie
- Not going in the right direction
- Separated from God
- Not knowing or understanding

- Foolishness
- Doesn’t know what makes them stumble
- They stumble
- gnashing and teeth!
- human mind illuminated by God’s revelation
- Prisonlike. Dark
2 Corinthians - Satan masks as light
- Not fun! (eternal punishment)
1 John 1:6 NIV
If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.
John 12:35 NIV

Psalm 82:5 NIV
“The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
Romans 1:21–22 NIV
For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools
John 11:10 NIV
It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light.”
Job 10:21–22 NIV
before I go to the place of no return, to the land of gloom and utter darkness, to the land of deepest night, of utter darkness and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”
Matthew 8:12 NIV
But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

- Peace

before I go to the place of no return, to the land of gloom and utter darkness, to the land of deepest night, of utter darkness and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”
2 Peter 1:19 NIV
We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
Ecclesiastes 2:13–14 NIV
I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness. The wise have eyes in their heads, while the fool walks in the darkness; but I came to realize that the same fate overtakes them both.
Psalm 82:5 NIV
“The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
1 John 2:9–11 NIV
Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.
2 NIVFor although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images
Matthew 8:12 NIV
But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Why would God create darkness? (small group)
Isaiah 45:7 NIV
I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things.
Is
He created darkness to achieve his purposes!
John 3:16–21 NIV
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
Ephesians 5:11–12 NIV
Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.
Matthew 27:45 NIV
From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.
Mark 15:33 NIV
At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
Luke 23:44 NIV
It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,
Why did God create darkness?
He uses it to achieve his purposes.

Conclusion

Jesus uses a picture of the eye as the “lamp of the body”. Physical blidness becomes a meaphor for the lost state
Luke 11:34–36 NIV
Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
The ultimate power of darkness was a temporary victory of evil as Christ hung dying on the cross. A victory that took the form of darkness for 3 hours that left people awestruck
