Intro

We have been talking about the fruit of the Spirit. Why? Because it is the stuff that God is growing in you. It His point for you on this earth. The fruit of the Spirit is supposed to start somewhere on the inside and keep growing so much that it it becomes attractive and delicious to those around you.
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Yesterday we got to talking about the good old days of TV… And eventually we started talking about Mr. Rogers. Someone said how they wished they could be like Mr. Rogers but people around her kept making her to angry… I responded, I think Mr. Rogers Neighborhood start on the inside and grows from within. It loves the unlovable. It chooses joy and peace as a thing that can happen on the inside despite the external circumstances that happen to us.
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE MAD THAT YOU FEEL
What do you do with the mad that you feel When you feel so mad you could bite? When the whole wide world seems oh, so wrong... And nothing you do seems very right?
You know what she was saying, “Love, joy, peace.... is supposed to be the fruit, but instead we recieved Hatred.”
What do you do? Do you punch a bag? Do you pound some clay or some dough? Do you round up friends for a game of tag? Or see how fast you go?
It's great to be able to stop When you've planned a thing that's wrong, And be able to do something else instead And think this song:
Let me say the worst sinners of them all should be able to look at your life and see the fruit so vibrantly that somewhere inside they say, I NEED THAT.
I can stop when I want to Can stop when I wish. I can stop, stop, stop any time. And what a good feeling to feel like this And know that the feeling is really mine. Know that there's something deep inside That helps us become what we can. For a girl can be someday a woman And a boy can be someday a man.

Exp

What is that something deep inside… It’s the Holy Spirit. Without ti the world look like this...
Galatians 5:16–21 ESV
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
None of that stuff looks like fruit. And you and the world… unless your heart has become hard can look at those things and say… “Now that’s a place I want to go. Fits of rage..... delicious.” Usually those things sneak up on you and grow within you when you are following your own fleshly desires and not allowing God to come in and help you be who He created you to be.
With Halloween coming up we got to talking about Halloween and costumes the other day and how easy it might be to offend a person. On of them said, “I hate when people dress like this..thinking its a joke. It ____ me off because my sister was bullied.....”
You know what she was saying, “Love, joy, peace.... is supposed to be the fruit, but instead we recieved Hatred.”
Let me say the worst sinners of them all should be able to look at your life and see the fruit so vibrantly that somewhere inside they say, I NEED THAT.

Today we are going to talk about the third fruit..... Peace.

We are going to first look at what God’s peace is NOT
We are going to then get a working definition of what the fruit of peace is and what it looks and tastes like compared to what the world gives.
We are going to look at how we can prepare our hearts to experience peace in our own lives and produce it in others.

What Peace is Not

Google definition - Freedom from disturbance, quiet and tranquility.
Years ago my family went camping.... so that I could relax… It was a very chaotic day until there was no more work to do then I could sit and breath.
In a little bit we are going to have macaroni and cheese and meatloaf. We are going to enjoy each other’s company and we will have peace.
Bible Definition
Afterwards we will go home and at some point I am probably going to be laying on my side trying to watch tv through my eyelids… peace.
You see we all have our places. Our things we do. Candles bubble baths. Beer. That cigarette. Some other thing that we use to get “release” from the chaos of this thing we call life.
Whether its healthy or not.... those things are a substitute of the peace that is being talked about. They are temporary.
One of the things that is wrong with the world and the people in it, is that we look for peace that lasts for a moment instead of looking to Jesus who is the Prince of Peace.

What Peace Is

Bible definition
eirene - peace, harmony, tranquility, freedom from worry.
Do we see the difference? The world says peace is an absence of trouble. The Bible allows and expects the trouble and gives you freedom from worry.
John 16:33 ESV
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
See the peace that the Spirit gives is bigger than a simple sunset or a hillside full of flowers. It’s a smile in the middle of the storm.
Van accident.
Sometimes we get distracted by the trouble in our lives. We get mad at God because He promised peace but He responds my saying, “You read the wrong contract.” God never promised freedom from trouble. In fact He promised that there would be trouble.
You will stub your toe in the middle of the night.
You will get sick
people will disappoint you and misjudge you and ridicule you behingdyour back and sometimes to your face.
People will not always look out for your best interest and if they are honest that will treat you with all selfishness.
You will do good and people will be ungrateful or worse judge you for having an impure heart.
Red lights last too long
Someone will cut you off.
Your spouse will say something really stupid
Your hopes and dreams will be dashed
You will suffer tragedy.
John 16:33 ESV
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Mazda accident
Jesus sleeping in the boat.
Source of Peace
Galatians 5:16 ESV
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Galatians 5:25 ESV
If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Galatians 5:

How to Get Peace

Galatians 5:
John 14:27 NIV
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:
Philippians 4:6–9 ESV
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
John 14:26–27 ESV
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
