David’s Cry in trying times

Psalm 5:1–2 CSB
Listen to my words, Lord; consider my sighing. Pay attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for I pray to you.

David’s Cry in trying times

David does not tell the details of his distress, but the assumption must be made that he was distressed by the way he cries out to God.
David does not tell the details of his distress, but the assumption must be made that he was distressed by the way he cries out to God.
But notice where he attention is in his time of distress. - He prays to God.
Many times we focus more on the problem then we do the solution.
Dealing on the problem does not fix the problem, sometimes it even increases the problem.
David here, turns to God who is the solution to His distress.
David makes a passionate appeal to God for help through prayer.
Both the verbal and emotional aspects of prayer
Listen to my words - David speaks to God.
Consider my sighing- The sound of sighing when you don’t have the words.
“The Spirit makes intercession for us when we don’t know what to pray”
After being married for a while a husband knows the sigh of his wife.
God knows our sighs.
David pours out his heart to God as He yearned for the Lord to intervene in his life.
David, being a king, still knows that he must turn to the King of the universe.
Why does David go to God in prayer and why should we?
He is King
We are not strangers to our king
Kings hear the appeal of their people and answer them for the good of the kingdom.
He is God
We are not strangers to our God.
We are worshippers of Him and He is ours by His own covenant, by His own promise, and by the blood of His own Son.
So, It is to Him and Him alone David prays to.
Where else would David go?
Where else would we go?

David’s Commitment to pray in the morning

Psalm 5:3 CSB
In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I plead my case to you and watch expectantly.
David begins his day by going to the Lord in prayer.
What better way to begin our day?
We begin our week (Sunday) by worshipping God.
We should also begin our days by going to God in prayer.
David pleads his case to the Lord.
This has the picture of laying the wood in order on the altar in preparation for the the sacrifice.
David is laying out is prayers orderly and properly knowing that they are to God.
David waits expectantly.
Not only is David laying out his prayers orderly, but he does so expecting God to accept them as He would a sacrifice.
The picture is of the watchmen who stay awake watching all night to provide protection.
They were not to fall asleep.
I think of the old fire towers were people
We should pray expecting God to move.
Wether the answer is yes or no.
Trusting in God for outcome.
We do not need to fall sleep in expectation for God to answer prayer, just continue to watch expectantly.

David’s Conviction about sin

Psalm 5:4–6 CSB
For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil cannot dwell with you. The boastful cannot stand in your sight; you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who tell lies; the Lord abhors violent and treacherous people.
David understood that a Holy God does not delight in wickedness.
All believers should have a high view of God’s Holiness
Moses in ; Isaiah in ; Peter in ; John in
David understands that a Holy God can not approve , tolerate, or fellowship with sin.
That is why Hab. says “Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil.”
Its not that God does not see evil, but that evil is not tolerated in His sight.
David understands that because God is Holy, he must reject all sin and sinners.
David is saying that sin cannot stand in the presence of God.
God therefore, hates all those who sin.
You hate the act of sexually abusing a child and the person that commits that act.
Why? because it is a horrible crime. - All sin is a horrible offense to God.
God hates sin because He is love.
God’s love fuels His hatred for sin.
Sin is what keeps His creation from Him.
So, because God loves His creation He hates anything and anyone that keeps someone from Him
That is why God so loved the world that he sent his one and only, unique Son to restore us back to Himself.

David’s Consecration before the Lord

Psalm 5:7–8 CSB
But I enter your house by the abundance of your faithful love; I bow down toward your holy temple in reverential awe of you. Lord, lead me in your righteousness because of my adversaries; make your way straight before me.
Psalm 5:7-
David speaks of those of can come into the presence of God.
The only way way that sinners can come into the dwelling place of God i through His sacrificial love.
That love of Giving His Son as an atonement for sin, satisfying God’s Holy wrath towards sin.
David does not say that he enters God’s house on his own.
He enters by the abundance of God’s faithful love.
A love that is in abundance is more than we need
Enough to cover past, present, and future sins.
David responds to God’s gracious love by humbly coming into his presence.
David bows down before A holy God paying honor to Him
Because it is only through Christ He can approach God.
David’s fear is not one of terror, but of awe.
It is truly awesome by the blood of Christ to be in the presence of an Infinitely Holy God.
This is how we should God and this is how we should be in His presence.
David asks God to lead him in righteousness.
This something we could all use, more righteousness.
David wants to continue in a right way of living.
Why does He pray this?
Because his enemies.
Whatever is your enemy, whether people, temptation, or sin, it causes us to detour.
So, like David we should ask God to make the paths of our lives straight.

David’s Condemnation on his enemies.

Psalm 5:9–10 CSB
For there is nothing reliable in what they say; destruction is within them; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongues. Punish them, God; let them fall by their own schemes. Drive them out because of their many crimes, for they rebel against you.
Psalm 5:
David realizes that his enemies have nothing good to say about him.
They only want to do him harm .
Whatever enemies David had/You have they can be trusted because they do not have your best entrust at heart.
David realizes the reality of who wicked people are.
They may speak flattering words, but they are really like an open grave
An open grave stinks
An open grave shows the outcome of death.
David calls for justice for those who had wronged him.
David burst out here with holy indignation toward those who had wronged him.
But the reason David cries for true for justice is because their sin is ultimately against God.

David’s Celebration of who God is.

Psalm 5:11–12 CSB
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them shout for joy forever. May you shelter them, and may those who love your name boast about you. For you, Lord, bless the righteous one; you surround him with favor like a shield.
Psalm 5:
David agains makes the contrasts of how the evil are to how the righteous are.
But let all who take refuge in you
Those who find their shelter and protection in God.
David’s high view of God leads him to a high praise for God.
Let them shout joy foever
Not just speak of it, but shout it out.
David is full of joy for who God is.
May you shelter them
God is a God of eternal protecton
Those who love your name should boast about you.
Brag on the Lord.
God is so good to us and we should tell others about it.
A great witness to the lost is simply bragging on what God is doing in your life.
We should see
David rejoices in God’s blessing.
God blesses the righteous ones.
How does he bless them?
By surrounding him with favor like a shield
God’s favor is on his people.
God protects his children like a shield surrounding them.
As the firey darts of the devil try to come against us, God is our shield.
As life tries to attack you from all sides, God surrounds us with His shield.
Con:
As long as we think that we are able to to succeed in this life on our own we will never pursue God with deep desperation.
When we abandon our on thoughts and our on efforts, we cry out God for who He truly is and it leads us to Praise God for who He truly is.
We must view everything with the perspective of a High, Holy God, even when circumstances are trying.
When we know who God is...
We know we can call out to Him
We know we can count on Him
We can then celebrate Him
