Introduction
It is an amazing privilege to be with you all again. It’s been a wonderful weekend for Dawn and I to reconnect with so many of you. Thanks to, of course, Hank and Becky for their hospitality. Also thanks to so many others, for the ladies meeting with Dawn and getting a chance to be at the tool bathing of James Pollard. By God’s providence we got to take in much of the happenings of the Heritage family this weekend.
It is equally an amazing, privilege and a most humbling one to be asked to bring the word to you this morning. For those that were in the Sunday School time, I was able to relay a bit of God’s leading in this regard. And while I have preached before, preaching within these four walls has such personal significance to me, that it’s hard to put into words.
I. Particular People of the church (vv.3-4)
a. People and history of Philippian Church
Take out your Bibles, if you would, and open to Philippians Chapter 1. I will be preaching today from , specifically on verses 3-6. However for completeness and context, I will read from the beginning of the Chapter through verse 11.
1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. 7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. 8 For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. 9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Let us pray and ask the Lord to bless our time in the Word together.
Our Lord and our God, we ask your continued blessing over this worship service, that it would honor and Glorify you and our Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask that the Holy Spirit would accompany the message today, that the words of my mouth and the listening and meditations of all of our hearts be acceptable in Thy sight…Amen.
This is my first message outside of Little Log Church, thus having a message to bring not part of an expository series or conference can make choosing a passage and message challenging. It is for a personal reason that I thought of this passage. Philippi was a church Paul knew and loved. And Heritage is one that I feel very similar about. This is also the season that the Founders of our country chose to celebrate the blessings from above through a holiday. While I nor Hank believe holidays, nor general topics of interest guide what we preach, it can be appropriate, by God’s providence to stop and use the calendar to help guide what the Lord may have for us, knowing where we are and who we are. And Thanksgiving is a clear theme of the passage.
It is most appropriate for us to give Thanks.
