Two of the harshest afflictions in this life are the breakdown (or brokenness) of the mind and of relationships. When they’re working well, we can function, thrive, and even persevere through physical trials. But when they’re not working well, it can have a domino effect in our lives and cause everything to fall apart. So, a treatment and solution for these afflictions would be an incredibly valuable thing. And the Bible gives us exactly that, particularly in this passage in Philippians. It is the transcendent, surpassing peace of God. Not inner tranquility, but rich, incomprehensible, God-sourced peace. Not found by ‘digging deep’, but by praying to, dwelling on, and living for God. Not guarded by withdrawing into ourselves, but by openly surrendering ourselves to God’s will. There is no peace as beautiful and wonderful and magnificent as this.
