Parenting!

__________________________________
Wisdom comes from above; Wisdom has a voice, wisdom has instructions, wisdom has warnings and sometimes wisdom may sound like a father or a mother. That is will we see in our passage tonight. A voice that gives command, application, reason and results when applied.
___________________________________
Parenting is hard work (joys, sorrows)-expand; Without a doubt it comes with giving instructions, now the instructions we give are important and where we get the instructions to give matters.
(insert picture of dusty bible - already saved on computer)
(illustration) (expand) which is it going to be a dusty bible or a well worn one what is used often? Charles Spurgeon said “A bible that is falling apart will more than likely belong to someone who isn’t.”
From the Bible we learn a Father’s command and a mother’s law from our passage tonight. Though wisdom speaks with the voice of a Father and of a Mother today the command, the reason, the results when applied do not change.

I. The Command

The fathers command, the mothers teaching both equate to the instruction given. Not just any instruction but instruction, teaching, doctrine that is from the Word of God. We are to hold dear the Word of God and use it to teach, to give instruction to others as a loving father or a caring mother would.
Proverbs 6:20–21 NASB95
20 My son, observe the commandment of your father And do not forsake the teaching of your mother; 21 Bind them continually on your heart; Tie them around your neck.
The object of the command:
The Father’s command- it was to observe, to be in obedience to it. (Pro1:8; Pro3:12)
In generations past there was the family bible in many homes and it was set out and was read from on regular basis. Fathers would read from it, teach God’s Word, God’s commands. The Bible was a centerpiece in the home, you could see the heritage of the family in it, and the responsibility to pass it on to the next generation.
Do you think that happens still today? If not, why?
How about some other bible examples regarding the Fathers command and mother’s law.
Proverbs 1:8 NASB95
8 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction And do not forsake your mother’s teaching;
and how about
Proverbs 3:12 NASB95
12 For whom the Lord loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.
Fathers needed to know the Word then implant the Word on their wife and on their children, in hopes that all would grow together as a family adhering to the Word of God.
The object of the command:
The Father’s command- it was to observe, to be in obedience to it.
The mother’s law (teaching) - gives the law of the land in the home for your upraising and protection, and to guide into keeping the Father’s command. (Pro31:1)
The mother’s law (teaching) - gives the law of the land in the home for your upraising and protection, and to guide into keeping the Father’s command.
The mother’s law (teaching) - gives the law of the land in the home for your upraising and protection, and to guide into keeping the Father’s command.
The mothers for the most part in generations past was the one who handled the day to day family affairs in raising the children. They would give the law of the land (home) and help the children to adhere to the Father’s command, to keep the Word of God. This also would include the Father’s earthly commands as the head of the home too.
Look at this scripture, look who gave the wise teaching.
Proverbs 31:1 NASB95
1 The words of King Lemuel, the oracle which his mother taught him:
So we have the Fathers command, the mothers teaching, all because there is to be application.
______________________________________________________
Application of the command
Keep (adhere to closely) Deu4:40; Jn14:21
Forsake them not (do not turn aside from; the warning) 2Chr24:20; Pro4:5-7
Bind them (let them become a part of you) Deu6:8; Pro3:3
Tie them (let them be an ornament around you)
_______________________________________________________
Application of the command, law, teaching
Keep (adhere to closely)
To keep is to adhere to closely and earnestly
To keep it so all will be with with you.
Bind them (let them become a part of you)
Deuteronomy 4:40 NASB95
40 “So you shall keep His statutes and His commandments which I am giving you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may live long on the land which the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”
Tie them (let them be an ornament around you)
To keep it so to prove your love for Christ
John 14:21 NASB95
21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”
Keep (adhere to closely) Deu4:40; Jn14:21
Forsake them not (do not turn aside from) 2Chr24:20; Pro4:5-7
Forsake, the warning not to turn aside from the command, the law, the teaching
2 Chronicles 24:20 NASB95
20 Then the Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people and said to them, “Thus God has said, ‘Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord and do not prosper? Because you have forsaken the Lord, He has also forsaken you.’ ”
we can add in another great passage too
Proverbs 4:5–6 NASB95
5 Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding! Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth. 6 “Do not forsake her, and she will guard you; Love her, and she will watch over you.
Proverbs 4:7 NASB95
7 “The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your acquiring, get understanding.
So when we keep them, when we do not forsake them, all will go well with us, we prove our love for the Lord and we acquire wisdom and understanding, so then we can bind them on our heart.
Keep (adhere to closely) Deu4:40; Jn14:21
Forsake them not (do not turn aside from) 2Chr24:20; Pro4:5-7
Bind them (let them become a part of you) Deu6:8; Pro3:3
We are to bind them, write them on the tablet of our heart. We are to put them before us always.
Deuteronomy 6:8 NASB95
8 “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.
and the other passage to go with this
Proverbs 3:3 NASB95
3 Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart.
So bind them on the tablet of your heart, put them before your hands and before you eyes, may they always be before you.
When you have something tied around your neck, it is always around you, it is with you. May the Fathers commands and the mothers teachings be around us always so all may be well with us.
May we take God’s Word spoken as a Father, and a Mother in our passage today and make it our life, the center of our life. Not an old dusty bible sitting on a table, but a well used on that may be rough around the edges at times, but has everything we need for life and godliness inside!
This leads me to our next point, just building on the application given. Now comes reasons.

II. The Reasons

Advise, teaching, commandments are not wasted words. They are given with a reason and a purpose. There are benefits to the application and a description of the application in our section now.
Proverbs 6:22–23 NASB95
22 When you walk about, they will guide you; When you sleep, they will watch over you; And when you awake, they will talk to you. 23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life

_____________________________________________
Three-fold benefit of the Word
Guidance (Psm23:3; Psm31:3; Act8:31)
The Lord through His Word will guide you. He will guide you on paths of righteousness
Psalm 23:3 NASB95

Provision (Php4:9; Psm147:8; Php4:6)
For His namesake, He will lead you
Psalm 31:3 NASB95
3 For You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name’s sake You will lead me and guide me.
God does use people to help guide us through the Word
Acts 8:31 NASB95
31 And he said, “Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
Three-fold benefit of the Word
Guidance (Psm23:3; Psm31:3; Act8:31)
Protection (Mt7:24-25; Pro4:6; Psm32:7)
While sleeping He keeps us (y’all may remember the old prayer, now I lay me down to sleep . . . ) This is the fulfillment of this. The Lord is our protection.
Matthew 7:24–25 NASB95
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.
When you build on the foundation of the Word in your life, it will protect your through the storms of this life.
Proverbs 4:6 NLT
6 Don’t turn your back on wisdom, for she will protect you. Love her, and she will guard you.
Wisdom, through the Word will guard you by teaching you, reminding you the Truth and the things needed to protect you, even sometimes in the means of correction or discipline.
Psalm 32:7 NIV
7 You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
Three-fold benefit of the Word
Guidance (Psm23:3; Psm31:3; Act8:31)
Protection (Mt7:24-25; Pro4:6 use NLT; Psm32:7)
Provision (Php4:9; Psm147:8; Php4:6)
Provision: He will provide for us through His Word
Philippians 4:9 NASB95
9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
What did people learn, the Word, the Truth, applicable truth, visible truth, practical truth, truth that promised results - God of peace with you!
Psalm 147:8 NASB95
8 Who covers the heavens with clouds, Who provides rain for the earth, Who makes grass to grow on the mountains.
He is the God of provision for all things, nature included. He cares for all His creation, but out of creation you are His greatest and made in His image.
Philippians 4:6 NASB95
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
So, go ahead ask Him to provide for you, in prayer, in supplication with thanksgiving. Don’t be anxious, be prayerful and you are always welcome to pray the Word, pray the promises of the Word too.
God’s word written on your heart helps you in all life situations. May the Word of God be filled in you and there to bring to remembrance in those life situations we may face.

ee-fold description of the Word
A lamp (Psm119:105)
A light
Way of life (2Tim3:16-17; Pro12:28)
As to a way of life, the word, corrects us, rebukes us, encourages us, instructs us and equips us.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NASB95
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
So it can guide us on the path
Proverbs 12:28 NASB95
28 In the way of righteousness is life, And in its pathway there is no death.
A path that has eternal life, no death (spiritual)
The command from the Father the law, the teaching from the mother are all to give you a purposed result.

III. The Result

I do not think there is any doubt we live in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation (see Php2:15). God’s wisdom through God’s Word, will help us to persevere in the midst of this world and walk in victory when we do not give in to evil.
Proverbs 6:24 NASB95
24 To keep you from the evil woman, From the smooth tongue of the adulteress.

We need the commands from the father the law, teachings from the mother so not to succumb temptation (Mt26:41)
For no temptation is uncommon, but the way out is provided by the Lord (1Cor10:13)
_____________________________________
God’s Word will keep you from specific evil
We need the commands from the father the law, teachings from the mother so not to succumb temptation (Mt26:41)
Matthew 26:41 NASB95
41 “Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Our part is to keep watching, watching for what? Watch for temptation the things that can take your eyes off of God and the prize.
This world is filled with evil and and is against God; we need to watch with Jesus as our guide through the Word (Mt12:30).
Matthew 12:30 NASB95
30 “He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters.
Now going back to another point I still want to make regarding temptation, that the Word will protect us from.
We need the commands from the father the law, teachings from the mother so not to succumb temptation (Mt26:41)
For no temptation is uncommon, but the way out is provided by the Lord (1Cor10:13)
1 Corinthians 10:13 NASB95
13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
Temptation is not uncommon, it is common, common to fallen man in a fallen world. But to the Christian when temptation comes God will provide a way of escape, so we can endure and not succumb to temptation.
God’s Word helps us to avoid evil
God’s Word helps us deal with evil in this world filled with immorality.
So be sure to listen to the commands of the father and the law, teachings, of the mother. Observe them, bind them, tie them around you. When you do they will guide you, they will watch over you, they will talk to you, they will keep you from evil!
Tie them (let them be an ornament around you)
