James 3:1–6 NASB95
Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

The Tongue has 3 Outstanding Capabilities

3 Outstanding Capabilities of the Tongue
Power to Direct
It has power to direct
It has power to destroy
It has power to delight

The Power to Direct

The tongue has the power to direct.
James 3:3–5 NASB95
Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!
James 3.3-

The Power to Destroy

The tongue has the power to destroy.
James 3:5–6 NASB95
So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.
James 3.5-6

The Power to Delight

The tongue has the power to delight.
James 3:9 NASB95
With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;
James 3.9
Notes:
James used negative illustrations, but these capabilities are necessarily evil
in reality, the tongue has no power by itself. It depends on the power behind it.
the ship’s rudder depends on the pilot
the horse’s bit depends on the horse rider
the fire depends on the wind
the tongue depends on the person using it.

Spiritual Maturity is Expressed in how our Tongue Works

The mature Christian has power over his tongue.
