Intro: We see the writer praying throughout the 119 Psalm. In these verses he takes it up to a new level, he concentrated on prayer, and cries out to God day and night.
From his personal experience he gives us some basic practical instructions about successful prayer.
“Pray when you feel like it and when you don’t feel like it, pray until you do”
SONG CRY OUT TO JESUS
I. A heart of dedication VS 145-146
a. A heart of passion. VS 145
He put his passion in his prayers.
We must seek God with our whole, heart.
17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months.
John Bunyan: “It is better to have a heart without words then words without heart”
2. In the O.T sanctuary, the golden altar of incense represented intercessory prayer.
Exodus 30:1-10
This special incense was burned in the alter, and the fragrant smoke rising heavenward pictured prayer going up to the Lord.
1 Lord, I cry unto thee: Make haste unto me;
Give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee.
2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense;
And the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
a. The dedication and devotion of the heart is what “ignites” our prayers and enables us to present our request to the Lord.
2. HE PUTS HIS PROMISES INTO HID PRAYERS.
“I will keep your statues”
a. He is not bargaining with God (answer my prayers or I will not obey you) but dedicating himself to God to obey Him no matter how he answers his prayers.
B. HEAR OF PLEDGE.
146 I cried unto thee; save me,
And I shall keep thy testimonies.
“Cry out” speaks of great intensity, deep within with a loud voice.
a. Passion in prayer of the emotional. Promises in prayer speaks of volitional.
b. Passion speaks of desperation, while promise speaks of determination.
c. He what’s God to rescue him, and also to rule him.
II. THE HEART OF DETERMINATION.
(Persistent prayer)
7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
A. THE ANTICIPATION OF THE MORNING.
147 I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried:
I hoped in thy word.
“I prevented the dawning of the morning”
147 I rise before dawn and cry for help;
I wait for Your words.
2. Whatever troubled his heart, he knew he could take it to the Lord and ask Him to help him.
a. He needed to be rescued and found his hope in God’s word.
b. It was in the early morning hours that he anticipated hearing God’s voice speak to his need.
B. THE MEDITATION OF THE EVENING. VS 148
Time of reflection, meditation, and evaluation.

8 Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime,
And in the night his song shall be with me,
And my prayer unto the God of my life.
This time often serves as a time of victory.
a. We must balance the word and prayer in our devotional life.
b. All bible and no prayer means light without heart, but all prayer and no bible could result in zeal without knowledge.
23 Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
III. A HEART FOR INTERVENTION. VS 149
His plea is made based on the lovingkindness of God. This is the basis of his fellowship with God.
3 Because thy lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips shall praise thee.
4 Thus will I bless thee while I live:
I will lift up my hands in thy name.

He is asking God to revive him, based on all his mercy.

5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
88 Quicken me after thy lovingkindness;
So shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.
a. He desires the Lord’s intervention because of His grace, mercy, lovingkindness.
IV. A HEART OF CONCENTRATION. VS 150-151
a. THE ENEMY DRAWING NEAR TO HARM.
150 They draw nigh that follow after mischief:
They are far from thy law.
150 Those who follow after wickedness draw near;
They are far from Your law.
The ones he is writing about are far from God.
OUTWARD:
a. He has a watch and pray mentality.
9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
B. THE LORD DRAWING NEAR TO HELP. VS 151

8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
